Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, a guard for the defending Super Bowl Champs Kansas City Chiefs, announced his decision Friday night to opt out of the 2020 NFL season. Duvernay-Tardif is the first NFL player to opt out of the 2020 season after the NFLPA and league came to a joint agreement Friday allowing players to sit out the season over coronavirus concerns.Duvernay-Tardif played 14 games last season for the Chiefs.In April, Duvernay-Tardif was featured by Sports Illustrated as he put his medical degree to use on the front lines fight the coronavirus. Duvernay-Tardif penned an op-ed in Sports Illustrated about his experience working as a doctor on the front lines during the pandemic.“When you’re going in to help it’s more about your duty as a doctor and a citizen,” he wrote in April. “It’s not the time to be the hero and be impulsive. You’ve gotta do it the right way. You’ve gotta really take this seriously when it comes to washing your hands, not touching anything.”On Friday, Duvernay-Tardif said he is confident the Chiefs have a good plan for returning to play, but the risks remain too high.“Being at the frontline during this offseason has given me a different perspective on this pandemic and the stress it puts on individuals and our healthcare system,” he wrote. “I cannot allow myself to potentially transmit the virus in our communities simply to play the sport that I love. LAKESIDE, Calif. (KGTV) -- A deputy was uninjured following a crash involving a patrol car in Lakeside Thursday night. According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, the crash happened on Mapleview Street near State Route 67. Two vehicles were involved in the crash, but authorities say the deputy was uninjured. The condition of the other driver and the circumstances surrounding the crash are unclear. 421
LAWRENCEBURG, Ind. -- Part of the popular RiverWatch restaurant on the Ohio River has vanished, and nobody seems quite sure where it went.The floating restaurant had a tiki bar attached on a separate barge. Authorities don't know if it sank or floated away. A boat normally docked at the restaurant was located downriver, but the tiki bar remained missing Sunday.The Ohio River did reach flood stage over the weekend."They can go back and reel back time and maybe figure out if anything hit, anything happened to force this to happen, because this tiki bar's been intact, I'm told, for 12 years," Lawrenceburg Mayor Kelly Mollaun said.The RiverWatch is a seasonal business, usually operating between April and October. LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) - Researchers at UC San Diego have found a way to improve radar technology that can make self-driving cars safer."Our vision is to make self-driving cars much more safer than how we humans drive," says Dinesh Bharadia, an Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at UC San Diego.Bharadia led a team of researchers working on ways to help autonomous vehicles see in bad weather.Currently, he says, self-driving cars rely on LiDAR, a light-based radar system. But it's performance is limited because it uses a low frequency that reflects in bad weather.Bharadia says his team tested wireless radar, which has a higher frequency wavelength and found it can rain and fog.However, the wireless radar's sight range is limited. So Bharadia's team built a system where five wireless radars work together to create a more full "view" of the road."From each radar's vantage point, you see something different," says Bharadia. "Those different things, observed from five different radars, gives you much more detailed aspect ratio of another car (on the road)."Bharadia says the combination of all five radars helps create a 3-D image of other objects on the road. That helps the car's self-driving system figure out how to avoid them."You need to know the exact aspect ratio of the other cars on the road," he says. "Only then can you drive around them if you need to."Bharadia says carmakers like Toyota and Honda have been helping with the research and development. He thinks this new technology could be on the road within 2-3 years."Radars are already out there," he says. "We just need to plug in our software to make the cars more autonomous..."It's a simple technology that can be widely deployed and used to make our roads safer for everyone."Bharadia and his team will present their findings at the Sensys Conference this week. LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV)- Some local businesses in La Mesa are angry over the new location of the city's Farmers Market. Some restaurants fear it will eat into their business. The new La Mesa Farmers Market will shut down La Mesa Boulevard from 1 p.m. until 8 p.m."It kills my lunch hour and it kills my dinner hour and I just can't risk it," said Restaurant Owner Johnny Bedlion.
