HAMPTON, Va. — Students and teachers across Hampton Roads are preparing to start the school year virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic. That means empty classrooms for a lot of teachers in the area, including Kecoughtan High School."Now it's a little bit different because you're looking around and going, 'Hey, they're not going to be filled,'" said Mark Mingee, a history and government teacher at the school and a 20-year teaching veteran. "I'm going to be looking at a screen to see their faces, as opposed to seeing them right in front of me."But Mingee is making his classroom a little fuller. He created a fundraiser where people can donate to a scholarship fund and have their picture shown on a desk.Mingee, an avid sports fan, said he got the idea after seeing several leagues around the world fill empty stands with cardboard cutouts."You started to see these images on screens various places, or in the transition of cardboard cutouts of people in the stands," he said. "The more I thought about it, the more I thought, 'Hey, if I'm going to be in my classroom, and I want there to be people around me, the best thing to do is try to emulate that in some way.'"So far, he said many friends, alumni and current students have taken part."We're used to, as teachers, having each one of those seats filled. So, as it appears those seats are filled, it makes you feel like a normal, everyday moment in class," Mingee said. GEELONG, Australia – Coronavirus can survive on money, phones and stainless steel for up to 28 days, according to a new study out of Australia.Researchers at the Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness (ACDP) found this can happen if the items are stored in cool and dark conditions.Experts say 68-degrees Fahrenheit is the perfect temperature for the virus to thrive on smooth surfaces, like glass, steel and plastic. The virus doesn’t do as well on porous surfaces, such as cotton.The virus only survived for a week when the temperature went up to 86-degrees Fahrenheit.Dr. Debbie Eagles, the Deputy Director of ACDP, says the results of the study reinforce the need for good practices, like regular handwashing and cleaning surfaces.“At 20 degrees Celsius, which is about room temperature, we found that the virus was extremely robust, surviving for 28 days on smooth surfaces such as glass found on mobile phone screens and plastic banknotes,” said Eagles. “For context, similar experiments for Influenza A have found that it survived on surfaces for 17 days, which highlights just how resilient SARS-CoV-2 is.”Experts say the research may help explain the apparent persistence and spread of the virus in cool environments with high lipid or protein contamination, such as meat processing facilities, and how we might better address that risk. 1358

GULF SHORES, Ala. – An Alabama woman says Hurricane Sally brought more than strong winds and heavy rains to her area.Tina Lambert Bennett spotted an alligator in the storm surge and captured the encounter on video.Bennett says she was upstairs in her Gulf Shores property, surveying the damage, when she spotted the gator in her yard.She believes the animal was at least 3.5 feet wide and 11 to 12 feet long.When the hurricane hit, surrounding canals overflowed and filled the marshlands.Bennett says she wants people to be aware of what can be in the water.It's not just alligators. She says there are also poisonous snakes in the area. 645
