Moon was already working on the technology before the pandemic to monitor other health conditions like asthma, COPD, sleep apnea, and lung cancer. But COVID-19 accelerated and pivoted the focus of the research.The team hopes to license the technology to a company that can produce and sell the device, likely at a price of around a few hundred dollars.“Seeing that would be a tremendous joy for me," said Moon.Moon is hopeful the wearable could be sold next year and that it will continue helping patients after the pandemic is over, delivering a sense of control in a time of such uncertainty. 1740

(KGTV) - As Governor Gavin Newsom orders seven California counties to close bars to stop the spread of coronavirus, San Diego County made that same decision on their own and now, some San Diego bars are trying to figure out how to stay open to save their future.Related: San Diego County to close bars that don't serve food ahead of July 4 to slow COVID-19 spreadThe directive from the county states that bars, wineries and breweries have to close by July 1 if they don’t serve food. There is an exception for businesses like rural wineries that have dominantly outdoor, spread out seating. For the food rule, a bag of chips does not count. An outline of the rules states businesses have to offer a sit down, dine-in meal and any alcohol purchased has to be on the same transaction of the meal.The co-owners of Carriage House Lounge said they don’t meet this requirement, but they’re brainstorming ways to add food so they can stay open.“Now we gotta close again? At least if we can open a little bit with some food, maybe we can make enough to pay the rent anyway so we don’t get deeper behind,” said Andrew Haines.Haines said he and his business partner Rachel Dymond been back open for less than three weeks before this second closure. During that span when they were open between closures, they barely hit 50% for sales, which has been enough to pay rent and paychecks, but not bring in a profit. They said they can’t consider a second closure, so they’re talking about bringing in catering or partnering with a local restaurant to have food and be able to stay open.They’re not alone in this plan.Chad Cline has ownership in multiple San Diego bars and restaurants, which he says have also been hurting financially through the last three months. He said his businesses that don’t serve food are also going to now have a food option so they can meet new regulations and be able to stay open. Cline said he doesn’t agree with the thought process behind the new law.“I don’t think any rational person is going to be able to wrap their head around the difference between going to a table and having a drink and then going to that same table and having a drink and a hamburger and the second trip is okay but the first trip is not okay,” said Cline.When asked why the food distinction was made, Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said bars lead to impaired judgement which can impact carefulness, people spend more time in bars, the loud setting requires people to yell which can spread droplets and the congregating makes contact tracing more difficult.Cline said they’ll follow the rules but he isn’t happy with the leaders who made this decision.“We just play the game and go okay we have to serve food so we’ll serve food, but if I’m being completely clear it is kind of a game at this point because we’re just trying to exist and we just have to figure out how to follow the guidelines,” said Cline. 2922

(KGTV) - With car horns blaring, cellphone video captured a fight breaking out at a busy intersection in San Diego near Montgomery High School.The incident played out at Palm Avenue and Beyer Way - just feet from the high school - as school let out Friday afternoon. In the crosswalk, there was a flurry off punches. A teen in a hoodie is recorded battering another student on the ground. Some other teens joins the fray and more punches are traded."It's stupid. Why have a fight so dramatic like that? It could cause a car accident," a student told 10News. We are not naming the student at the request of their family.The student doesn't know what sparked the fight, but says those involved were juniors. The student told 10News this was the third big fight on campus this year. "Just make us look bad. Students should set a good example for our school," the student said.There were no accidents, but some of those drivers did get out of their cars. A witness tells us some tried to stop the fight. In the now-viral video, a crowd of people spill across the crosswalk. The melee lasted more than 20 minutes before it broke up. Police arrived but did not make any arrests.Janet Paz, a mother of two students at the school, says it sends a bad message."Makes me feel worried that kids aren't safe in school," said Paz.A spokesperson with the Sweetwater Union High School District says they believe they've identified the three-to-five students involved and are mulling possible discipline. SAN DIEGO — A lawsuit was announced Monday over the death of Roxsana Hernandez, a transgender woman who died in Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody earlier this year as she sought asylum at the border.Hernandez arrived at the U.S.-Mexico border in San Ysidro in May from her native Honduras, but Transgender Law Center Director Lynly Egyes said Hernandez “came to the U.S. seeking protection and instead was met with torture.”"An independent autopsy report reveals that Roxsana was shackled for a long time and very tightly, enough to cause deep bruising on her wrists. She also had deep bruising Injuries consistent with physical abuse with a baton or asp while she was handcuffed, according to an examination of the tissue by an independent expert board-certified forensic pathologist," Egyes said.According to attorneys, Hernandez died from dehydration after being denied water and medical care.Hernandez, who was HIV positive, became very ill as she was transferred from California to Texas, back to California, and then to New Mexico, where she died.Hernandez’s family is hoping the wrongful death lawsuit will provide answers as to what happened. (KGTV) - NOAA's Climate Prediction Center released the updated outlook for winter 2020-2021 expectations, and the report shows the increased confidence for a moderate La Nina winter.National Weather Service Meteorologist Alex Tardy said La Nina winters mean cold water along the equator, which are already present in October. These cold waters can have a domino impact on the globe, including warmer waters in the Atlantic and ultimately a higher risk of hurricanes, and also a more northern jet stream over the west coast, keeping moisture isolated more north and leading to dry conditions in Southern California.This dry winter coupled with San Diego’s recent weather history could be a recipe for disaster. The last two winters have been wet in San Diego, with most areas in San Diego County getting 1.5 times their usual rainfall during the most recent winter. This increased moisture helped vegetation grow, then the summer of 2020 brought record-breaking heat, drying that vegetation out. That, coupled with a lack of monsoon moisture in 2020, means there is dry vegetation that could be fuel for fires.“Any type of fire is going to be a problem in Southern California because the conditions are so dry,” said Tardy.He added that a new water year just began Oct. 1, 2020, so while the last water year had impressive rain totals, a new year has started.“So regardless of what happened last winter, we kind of reset now. Now we’re in a whole new year and unfortunately, things are looking very stressed as far as fire conditions,” said Tardy.He said rain is not out of the question for a La Nina year, but it will be more variable.
