For the first time, a bill to legalize marijuana at the federal level will soon go to the floor of the U.S. House for a vote.“The MORE Act would actually erase past convictions for marijuana offenses, opening the door to opportunities to jobs, housing, education, things that could help people, but it would also make it so people will no longer be denied federal benefits because of marijuana activity,” said Maritza Perez, Director of the Drug Policy Alliance. Some CEOs of companies in the industry say the bill has a long road ahead but are optimistic marijuana will become legal at some point.“I think that it creates that dialogue where we can have sensible legislation and policy when it comes to cannabis and THC products,” said Joe Dowling, CEO of CV Services.“It’s actually one of the few things that when I’m talking to people on both sides of the aisle, that they actually agree, that it’s something that can move us forward in one direction in creating jobs and stimulating the economy,” said Michael Cammarata, CEO of Neptune Wellness Solutions.Studies show more people support the legalization of marijuana. A 2019 Gallup poll showed majority-support across major political parties for legalizing marijuana. It showed 51% of Republicans, 68% of independents, and 76% of Democrats are in favor of it.A vote on the MORE Act is expected to happen next week. If it passes the Democratic-controlled House, it faces a challenge in the Republican-controlled Senate. 1480

Former President George H.W. Bush's family intentionally planned a state funeral for him that will avoid criticism of President Donald Trump despite the long-running animosity between the two families, The Washington Post reported Monday night.Trump and Bush's son, Jeb Bush, engaged in a vitriolic primary rivalry during the 2016 campaign, and Trump has mocked and criticized the legacies of both Presidents Bush. A funeral that avoids criticizing Trump would be in contrast to the September memorial for Sen. John McCain, which was marked by implicit references to Trump and his behavior as president. The Post, citing a former administration official, said that the Bush family contacted the White House this past summer to make it clear that the President would be welcome at the funeral and, according to the paper, to "assure him that the focus would be on Bush's life rather than their disagreements."PHOTOS: President George H.W. Feeding the country during a pandemic is no short order. In fact, it's an incredibly tall one stacked 60 feet high inside grocery warehouses across the country.Mike Violette is the CEO at Associated Grocers of New England. We first met Mike back in March, when Americans were buying food in record numbers. Workers in this warehouse could barely keep up with demand. Shelves sat as empty as suppliers couldn't keep up with the demand for everything from paper towels to flour."What we saw last March, you won’t see that again. Paper manufacturers have changed their lines, what they’re producing, and how they’re producing," Violette explained.Demand for groceries across the country is still up 20 percent over this time last year. While suppliers have kept up with demand, there are random shortages for things like glass mason jars."People are cooking, people are eating at home and they’re cooking. A lot of people learned to cook from last March forward, and they’re doing more of it," Violette added. This time around, Violette and other grocers are urging Americans to avoid panic buying as some states reimpose COVID-19 restrictions."There’s no need to stock up. There’ll be plenty of product; the food supply is strong and by people stocking up, it makes it harder for people to get products and people have to make more frequent stops to go to the store,” Violette said. There’s something else this grocery distributor has realized in recent months: even with near-record numbers of Americans unemployed, they’re having trouble filling jobs.Warehouses and factories across the country have noticed similar trends. Part of the reason is that workers are concerned about catching COVID-19 and not filling open positions. This is also not the kind of job that can be done from home."I think a lot of it is the type of work that it is. It involves heavy lifting, so it can be hard work," Violette said. But all that aside, these men and women will keep working to keep grocery store shelves stocked to keep America fed during the pandemic. 2050

For the fifth straight year, Jamal Hinton and Wanda Dench celebrated Thanksgiving together — though the yearly tradition this year was marked by grief.Hinton, 21, and Dench, 63, first met in 2016, when Dench mistakenly texted Hinton while trying to reach her grandson about plans for Thanksgiving. Despite the mistake, Hinton jokingly invited himself over."Of course you can," Dench replied. "That's what grandmas do ... feed everyone!"Hinton stayed true to his promised and actually showed up with his girlfriend, and Dench welcomed the two with open arms. Screenshots of their text interactions and photos from the meal were shared thousands of times on social media, making Hinton and Dench social media icons.Hinton and Dench have stayed in touch over the years. The New York Times reports that Dench and her husband, Lonnie, would often double date with Hinton and his girlfriend. Throughout the years, Dench has saved two seats open for him at her Thanksgiving table, and Hinton always showed up.But this year's Thanksgiving will mark the first without Lonnie. He died of COVID-19 complications in April. At the time, Hinton broke the sad news on his Twitter account."As some of you may have already found out tonight Lonnie did not make it," he tweeted. "Wanda told me all the love and support he was receiving put a huge smile on his face, so I thank every single one of you guys for that!" 1405

Few masks, no social distancing, hugs, and handshakes were likely a jarring sight for public health experts and Americans cautiously going about life amid the coronavirus pandemic. With hundreds of our nation’s leaders sitting shoulder to shoulder last Saturday in the White House Rose Garden, President Donald Trump picked Judge Amy Coney Barrett to fill the open seat on the Supreme Court following the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. In the six days that have followed, at least 10 known coronavirus cases have emerged from that event, including President Donald Trump, first lady Melania Trump, Sens. Thom Tillis, and Mike Lee, Notre Dame John I. Jenkins, Pastor Greg Laurie, Gov. Chris Christie, White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany and former White House adviser Kellyanne Conway. The White House Correspondents Association (WHCA) also said an unnamed reporter who attended Saturday's announcement also tested positive for the virus. That person became symptomatic on Wednesday and tested positive on Friday. The WHCA has confirmed that two other journalists who cover the White House have tested positive for the virus in recent days, though it's unclear if those unnamed reporters were present for Barrett's nomination. In addition, others who have been in contact with Trump, White House senior aide Hope Hicks, and RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel, have tested positive for the virus. The CDC says that the incubation period for the coronavirus is up to 14 days following infection, meaning it’s possible more attendees could develop symptoms in the coming days.Given the incubation period, the CDC urges those who have been in close contact with positive coronavirus cases to quarantine for 14 days. With a number of prominent members of government now infected with the virus, it’s unclear how many US senators, senior White House aides, and others in the upper echelons of the US government will follow these guidelines after snubbing social distancing guidelines. For those who have been infected, they now are urged to isolate for at least 10 days to prevent the spread of the virus. In severe cases, isolation could be required for up to 20 days, the CDC says. 2187
