PARIS, April 27 (Xinhua) -- French President Nicolas Sarkozy says he wants to enhance Franco-Sino relations at all levels because China has an indispensable role to play on the global stage.The French president was speaking in an interview with Xinhua Tuesday before his visit to China, where he will attend the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai.President Sarkozy described bilateral ties and partnership as comprehensive as well as strategic."Comprehensive, because it covers all aspects of our relationship; strategic, because China has become an absolutely essential player on the international stage. There is no more big issue today that we can tackle without China," Sarkozy said.Referring to the establishment of the France-China diplomatic relations 45 years ago, the president said some misunderstanding between the two countries had belonged to the past and he held a firm confidence in China's future."This is why I made the strengthening of the Franco-Chinese partnership a priority of our foreign policy," Sarkozy said.He said relations between the two countries had warmed and France would like to further ties with China "in all dimensions."

SHIJIAZHUANG, March 31 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese leader Li Changchun on Wednesday called for more efforts to develop socialist culture with Chinese characteristics.In an inspection tour of Hebei Province, Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, urged cultural authorities to reform and innovate to vigorously develop the culture sector.Li summed up progress in the culture sector since the 16th CPC congress in 2002 as a balance of the development of different aspects of the sector."In developing the culture sector, we must correctly handle the relationships between public cultural services and cultural industries, social influence and economic returns, Chinese culture and foreign culture, and the roles of government funding and non-government investment," Li said.Visiting the old revolutionary base of Xibaipo, where the CPC central committee was stationed before moving to Beijing in 1949, he asked local officials to file and digitalize the videos, photos and items that documented the history of the Party.

BEIJING, May 19 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government has given priority to the rebuilding and repairing of residential houses during post-quake reconstruction in northwestern Yushu.A 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in northwest China's Qinghai Province on April 14, leaving at least 2,200 dead."Houses that are repaired must be repaired in a timely manner. For those that are to be rebuilt, residents' wishes regarding house style must be respected," the statement released after a regular State Council meeting on Wednesday said.The statement noted the difficulties the reconstruction work faces: cold weather, low oxygen-levels, a fragile ecosystem, and inadequate construction resources.According to the statement, the country plans to spend three years finishing the "main reconstruction task."The government vowed to build the "safest and most stable" schools and hospitals in the quake zone while protecting local ethnic and religious cultural heritage.
