WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump is extending the voluntary national shutdown for a month as sickness and death from the coronavirus pandemic rise in the U.S. The initial 15 days of social distancing urged by the federal government is expiring and Trump had expressed interest in relaxing the guidelines at least in parts of the country less afflicted by the pandemic. But instead he decided to extend them. Many states and local governments have stiffer controls in place on mobility and gatherings. The unusual machinations at Thursday's hearing in the Senate could derail the nomination and push Issa to run for Congress, instead.The scheduled hearing came one year to the day after President Donald Trump nominated Issa, a former nine-term congressman serving parts of San Diego and Orange County, to run the U.S. Trade and Development Agency. But as the hearing began, ranking Democrat Robert Menendez (D-New Jersey) moved that the hearing be held in private. "There's information in his FBI background investigation that concerns me greatly, and that I believe members may find problematic, and potentially disqualifying for Senate confirmation," Menendez said. "I firmly believe that every member of this committee should have the opportunity to review that information." He went on to suggest that holding the hearing in public could bring embarrassment or harm to Issa.Chairman James Risch (R-Idaho) initially suggested continuing in public, but then left the room for a brief conference with Menendez and Issa. When the senators returned, Issa was not with them. Risch revealed his decision to postpone the confirmation hearing indefinitely. WASHINGTON, Mo. - A Missouri middle schooler died this weekend due to complications from COVID-19.The School District of Washington, Missouri, said eighth-grader Peyton Baumgarth was hospitalized due to the virus's symptoms and passed away over the weekend.Superintendent Lori VanLeer said in a letter to parents, the district extends its "heartfelt sympathy" to his family and asked the public to respect their privacy.She wrote that the family asks everyone to follow COVID-19 safety precautions such as washing hands and wearing masks. "COVID-19 is real, and they want to remind students and parents to take these precautions in and outside of school," VanLeer wrote.Additional counselors will be available at the school Wednesday, according to the letter.Peyton's last day at school was Oct. 22. VanLeer said the school was informed he was in quarantine on Oct. 26.According to local media stations KMOV and KSDK, Baumgarth was the state's youngest victim of the deadly virus.
