SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- In February, we spoke to Jelynn Malone from Mostra Coffee after her coffee shop won best roaster in the U.S. by Roast Magazine. Since then, things for small businesses like hers have been touch and loyal customers including high school juniors, Siya and Anoushka, wanted to help."A lot of businesses were closing. We both brainstormed about how we could help local businesses who have helped us in the past," said Anoushka." So they created a campaign called Loving the Locals. "We started a GoFund Me page and reached out to friends and family who were able to donate. With that money, we were able to donate to Mostra Coffee."And when Malone was ready to meet her donors she said, "I'm looking for adults, they didn't give me their names or tell me how much and I see these two young high school girls and they're like 'Are you Jelynn?'" To describe Malone as surprised was an understatement. "Then they hand over this large check to me and it says a thousand dollars and I'm completely shocked. I'm emotional, touched," Malone described. Malone's no stranger to giving back. A portion of her profits goes to farmers in the Phillippines, where she sources a lot of her product from. When the pandemic began, she donated gratitude boxes to frontline workers. All of her efforts never went unnoticed, even by young customers. "They [Mostra Coffee] continue to give back to community even during these difficult times and we felt that quality was important to us and it's what we were going for. We shared similar values and they were a great fit for us," Siya said. Mostra Coffee is the first business Loving the Locals has donated to. They have a GoFund Me and all profits will go to another small business once their goal is met. 1760

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Leonardo Hurtado Ibarra is being remembered as a family man with a complex and troubled life.“He’d always keep a smile on his face regardless of whatever he was going through," Abril Huerta told ABC 10News.Ibarra, 25, was shot and killed after allegedly pointing a revolver at a San Diego Police Department officer in Downtown San Diego on Saturday night.According to police, officers recognized Ibarra from a wanted poster in connection with a robbery that happened last week. Police said officers tried to talk with Ibarra but he walked away.Ibarra then dropped some items from his arms and "reached into his waistband," according to police. She said Ibarra "wasn’t a saint" and that he had a "complicated background."Ibarra was sentenced to three years in prison stemming from a domestic abuse case in 2013, according to court records obtained by ABC 10News.Huerta, who said she was the love of Ibarra’s life, told ABC 10News that he leaves behind three children.“He loved his family," Huerta told 10News in a statement. "He was the most loyal individual you could ever meet and he’d give you the shirt off his back if you were in need."“He only wanted to defend himself from any harm that were to come his way,” she said. The police department has not released the names of the officers involved in the shooting. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Local leaders say it's going to cost millions of dollars to prevent toxic waste from flowing into the Tijuana River Valley, but it's a bill they are willing to pay. Dozens of local leaders and federal agencies came together this morning with a common goal, to prevent the massive amounts of sewage from flowing into our San Diego County beaches. "427 million gallons of sewage has hit our water and our beaches just this year alone," says Port of San Diego Commissioner, Dan Malcolm. During today's meeting, leaders were given possible solutions on how to tackle the problem. "To divert sewage and wastewater flow away from the Tijuana River Valleys, so that it can either be treated or diverted to outflow pumps, that would pump the water far out in the Pacific Ocean," says Mayor of Coronado Richard Bailey.The costs are estimated up to 0 million. Local leaders say sewage isn't the only contaminate in the water. A chemical test was done that showed things like herbicides, arsenic, and lead are also flowing into the sea. "The time of talk is over," says Serge Dedina, Mayor of Imperial Beach. "The time of actually doing things and preventing sewage and toxic waste from reaching our beach is now."Local leaders say the next plan of action is to ask Congress for help with funding. Mayor Kevin Faulconer and Mayor Serge Dedina will be visiting Mexico over the next few days to talk about solutions to the waste in the Tijuana River Valley. 1475

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Inclement weather beginning Monday and lasting through Thursday will bring cooler temperatures and rain to San Diego County amid a busy travel season. The first of a series of storms is set to arrive Monday, bringing rain and snow to the county. A second storm is due to bring another round of moisture Christmas night through Thursday. Between the two storm systems, light showers will occur, according to the National Weather Service. The first round of storms are forecast to dump as much as an inch of rain along the coast and in the mountains. Snow accumulations between one and three inches are expected for elevations between 5,000 and 6,000 feet. The agency says the second storm is colder, which means it could have a greater impact in the mountains, including through the Cajon pass and I-8 across the San Diego County mountains. 1172
