RAMONA, Calif. (KGTV) — Poor road conditions and speed are being blamed for a solo-vehicle crash that left one person dead.California Highway Patrol said a Mitsubishi Montero was traveling northbound on State route 67, just north of Shady Bend, at about 6 a.m. Friday when it entered a slight curve on the roadway. Due to the vehicle's speed and the wet, partially icy roadway, the vehicle careened off the road and collided with a tree on the left side of the road, CHP said.RELATED: Video: Truck, school bus spin out on icy Interstate 8Interactive map: Winter storm coats Southern California in hail and snowThe driver, identified as a 43-year-old Spring Valley man, sustained major blunt force trauma and was pronounced dead at the scene by Ramona Fire Department officials. The man was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and, at this time, alcohol or drugs are not considered a factor in the crash. He was not been identified pending family notification.CHP investigators were continuing to investigate the crash Friday. 1041

RAMONA (KGTV) - Seven acres burned in a brush fire near downtown Ramona Saturday, according to CalFire. At 6 p.m. Cal Fire PIO Issac Sanchez said the fire was 20% contained.The fire burned near Montecito Road and North Ramona Street.Hundreds of neighbors were evacuated from the Ramona Mountain Valley Apartments, where the fire burned right up to their fence. Juliette Farey, a mother and resident at the complex said she was coming back from her son's birthday party and when she saw the smoke, she knew her home was at risk."We were scared for our lives," she said.Farey said the unruly gold bushes on the other side of the fence were out of control, and wished they would be better maintained to keep a fire from happening in the future.Sanchez said the fire started with a pile of debris in the riverbed then spread to nearby grass. Sixty-five fire fighters responded, working to protect neighbors, two planes and a helicopter also jumped into action to help. Farey believes homeless who live in the riverbed started the fire, saying the high rent is to blame. "They probably lit a fire in the river bottom to stay warm," she said.Other residents were terrified, saying they've never experienced a scare like this."There was just this wall of smoke. I grabbed our animals and my daughters," Angelina Rios said police banged on their door urging them to get out and that's when they saw the wall of smoke steps away.Her daughter Destiny Minjares described the fear gripping her and her neighbors, that turned to excitement as a helicopter soared just over their heads dropping water.Destiny said they got splashed and everyone cheered after the successful maneuver, a feeling that quickly faded as they saw the fire was still raging nearby.Firefighters got a handle on the fire around 6 p.m. The evacuations have been lifted. All road closures have been lifted as well. Firefighters are expected to be at the scene for several hours.This is a developing story. 10News will update as details become available.  2101

Residents in states hit by Hurricane Laura continue the long recovery to restoring their homes and businesses destroyed in the Category 4 storm.The death toll from Hurricane Laura has risen to 19 people across Louisiana and Texas.Power and water outages were widely reported in the hardest-hit areas, and it is expected to take weeks before the outages are restored.One of the places hit by the storm was Orange, Texas. Strong winds destroyed buildings, downed power lines and uprooted trees.Resident Robert Matthews is an employee at Mowers, Tractors Inc. in Orange. RAMONA, Calif. (KGTV) — A 53-year-old cyclist remains on life support after a hit-and-run crash in Ramona.Michelle Scott was biking to work Wednesday morning on State Route 67 when California Highway Patrol says a driver swerved onto the shoulder and hit her. Scott was wearing a helmet and had lights and reflective gear on her bicycle, her husband said."It was impossible not to have seen her," Don Scott said.RELATED: Bicyclist airlifted after being hurt in hit-and-run crash in RamonaThe crash happened on SR-67 north of Dye Road around 6:30 a.m.Investigators say the driver was in a black 2019 Ford Edge. They've since learned the vehicle had stolen license plates.CHP says the driver sped off from the crash site with Michelle's bicycle still lodged in the front grill, but Don isn't letting anger seep in."Anger is not going to help the recovery process," he said. "I'm actually most focused on the recovery of my wife."Both he and Michelle are Community Emergency Response Team volunteers through FEMA and the Ramona Fire Department, with training to respond to disasters."It's hard to accept the different stages of grieving when you already know them but you're the one that's going through the grieving," he said.Michelle was sent flying into the roadway after the crash. Several bystanders, including a nurse, stopped to help."I was just informed today by the doctors that had it not been for the people stopping, the Good Samaritans, the outcome could have been even worse than it already is," Scott said.Both the family and CHP are hoping a tip from the public will provide a break in the case.
