President Donald Trump said Friday he will head to Florida later in the day to meet with those affected by the school shooting that left 17 dead in southern Florida."I will be leaving for Florida today to meet with some of the bravest people on earth -- but people whose lives have been totally shattered," Trump tweeted Friday morning. "Am also working with Congress on many fronts."It was not immediately clear whether Trump would be heading to Parkland, Florida, the site of the school shooting. But Trump was scheduled to leave Friday afternoon for West Palm Beach, which is less than 40 miles away.  617

POWAY, CA (KGTV) - A post office in Poway could soon be named after Ray Chavez, who was the oldest living Pearl Harbor survivor when he passed away in 2018.Wednesday, California Representative Scott Peters will announce legislation to make the change. He says it's backed by every member of California's Congressional delegation.Chavez served in the Navy and was stationed on the USS Condor minesweeper on December 7, 1941. After the Japanese fighter planes attacked, he spent 9 days searching the water for enemy subs and wreckage of sunken US ships.Over the last few years, Chavez had been a staple of WWII and Pearl Harbor commemoration ceremonies, even flying to Washington DC to meet with President Trump in the spring of 2018.He passed away in November of 2018.RELATED: Oldest Pearl Harbor survivor dies at 106It takes an act of Congress to name a Post Office. In a news release, Peters' office says that a handful of local leaders from the City of Poway, the Post Office and military groups will gather at the Post Office on Midland Road to show their support and urge Congress to approve the change."He didn’t grab the spotlight, the spotlight came to him," says Mark Balmert, the President of the San Diego Military Advisory Council. "He accepted that, and he did a great job of telling people what it was like to be part of the Greatest Generation."RELATED: Oldest Pearl Harbor survivor laid to restPeople in Poway say they'll be proud to go to a Post Office named after a local hero."Every day people will see his name there," says Karen Simonich. "He’s a survivor who lived a long life. It’s an honor for him and I think people will appreciate his name being remembered that way.""It’s terrific," says Len Holyk. "It's a big honor for him and his family and for all the vets out there that served the country."Balmert says he hopes the change will inspire more people to learn about Chavez and the legacy of WWII Veterans."He was always proud to be an American and proud to serve and very humble about it," says Balmert. 2041

President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump will travel to Pittsburgh on Tuesday, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said Monday. She called the "heinous killing" at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh "a chilling act of mass murder" and an "act of hatred," adding that anti-Semitism is a "plague to humanity" and something that all Americans "have a duty to confront.""The American people reject hatred, bigotry, prejudice and violence," she said during the first White House press briefing in 26 days.Sanders noted that the President -- whose daughter, son-in-law, and three grandchildren are Jewish -- "adores" and "cherishes" the Jewish community, her voice breaking up at times. 710

President Donald Trump is "somewhat embarrassed" by special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election, White House chief of staff John Kelly says.In an interview on NPR's "Morning Edition" that was released late Thursday, Kelly was asked whether the special counsel's probe leaves a cloud hanging over the White House."It may not be a cloud, but certainly the President is somewhat embarrassed, frankly," Kelly said.Kelly also seemed to suggest that the Russia investigation affects Trump's relationship with other world leaders."When world leaders come in -- you know Bibi Netanyahu who was here and who's under investigation himself -- and it's like you walk in and you know the first couple of minutes of every conversation might revolve around that kind of thing," Kelly said, using the nickname for the Israeli Prime Minister who is under investigation in two separate criminal probes. When asked if he shares the President's opinion that the Mueller probe is a "witch hunt," Kelly said, "Something that has gone on this long without any real meat on the bone, it suggests to me that there is nothing there, relative to our President."A retired four-star Marine general, Kelly took over as Trump's chief of staff for Reince Priebus last July, hoping to bring order to a chaotic White House. But he has seen his influence diminish in recent months as Trump has started to bypass Kelly."In retrospect, I wish I had been here from day one," Kelly told NPR. "I think in some cases, in terms of staffing or serving the President, that first six months was pretty chaotic and there were people some people hired that maybe shouldn't have hired some people." 1703

President Donald Trump on Friday nixed plans for Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to travel to North Korea to hold a next round of denuclearization talks, citing insufficient progress on the issue."I have asked Secretary of State Mike Pompeo not to go to North Korea, at this time, because I feel we are not making sufficient progress with respect to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula," Trump tweeted on Friday. "Secretary Pompeo looks forward to going to North Korea in the near future, most likely after our Trading relationship with China is resolved."Trump canceled the trip just a day after Pompeo announced his plans to make his fourth visit to Pyongyang next week. There were no plans for a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.Trump on Friday also blamed the exchange of tariffs battle between the US and China for the lack of progress on North Korean denuclearization, something he has previously hinted at."Because of our much tougher Trading stance with China, I do not believe they are helping with the process of denuclearization as they once were (despite the UN Sanctions which are in place)," Trump in one of three tweets Friday afternoon on the issue.Despite the cancellation, Trump sent his "warmest regards and respect" to Kim and said he looks "forward to seeing him soon!"The-CNN-Wire 1330
