WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S., Canada, and Mexico have agreed to keep their shared borders closed to non-essential traffic until at least late August because of COVID-19. Acting U.S. Department of Homeland Security Chad Wolf announced the agreement Thursday. He said restrictions on cross-border traffic that have been in place since March have helped slow the spread of the coronavirus. Canada Prime Minister also made the announcement during a news conference on Parliament Hill. The extension agreed to by the three countries would keep the border closed until Aug. 21. The partial closure restricts crossing to commercial traffic, people returning to their home country and other travel deemed essential. It prohibits people from traveling between the countries for tourism or shopping. 794

WASHINGTON, D.C. – President-elect Joe Biden introduced his picks for several of his most senior economic advisers at a press event on Tuesday afternoon. The group includes liberal economists and policy specialists who established their credentials during the previous two Democratic administrations. Biden is placing a premium on diversity in his selection of Cabinet nominees and key advisers. For treasury secretary, Biden has nominated former Fed chair Janet Yellen. She would be the first woman to lead the Treasury Department in its 231 years of existence. She would also be the first person to serve as treasury secretary, chair of the Federal Reserve, and chair of the Council of Economic Advisers. In introducing Yellen, Biden called her the most qualified person for the job, citing her work at the Fed following the economic recession of the late '00s.In referencing the hit Broadway play "Hamilton," which centers around the life of the first Secretary of Treasury, Alexander Hamilton, Biden joked that Lin Manual-Miranda would eventually need to write a musical based on Yellen's life.Biden has also tapped Neera Tanden to head the Office of Management and Budget. Tanden would be the first woman of color and the first South Asian woman to lead the agency that oversees the federal budget. She currently serves as President and CEO of the Center for American Progress, an organization dedicated to advancing policies that increase opportunity for Americans.Additionally, Biden has chosen Wally Adeyemo as his deputy treasury secretary. WASHINGTON, D.C. – If Joe Biden wins the presidency, the former vice president says he would rejoin the Paris Agreement on his first day in office. The United States formally withdrew from the agreement on Wednesday, as President Donald Trump promised to do last year.“Today, the Trump Administration officially left the Paris Climate Agreement. And in exactly 77 days, a Biden Administration will rejoin it,” Biden tweeted Wednesday in reaction to Trump’s actions. The agreement is a global pact that was put together by the United Nations in 2015 to help avert the threat of catastrophic climate change. The central aim is to strengthen the global response to the threat of climate change by keeping a global temperature rise this century well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase even further to 1.5 degrees Celsius.Scientists say that any temperature rise over could have devastating impacts on parts of the planets, including rising sea levels, an increase in tropical storms and worsening droughts and floods.A total of 189 countries remain committed to the accord, according to The Associated Press. 1182

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Michael Caputo will take a leave of absence from his job with the Trump administration following controversial comments he made on Facebook, accusing "deep state scientists" who work for the government of wanting Americans to be sick with COVID-19 through the presidential election."Today, the Department of Health and Human Services is announcing that HHS Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Michael Caputo has decided to take a leave of absence to focus on his health and the well-being of his family. Mr. Caputo will be on leave for the next 60 days," a statement from the department said."I'm not going anywhere. They're going to have to kill me," Caputo said in the Facebook video which has since been taken down. "And unfortunately I think that's where this is going. The partisan Democrats, the conjugal media, and the scientists, the deep state scientists, want America sick through November."Caputo, who lives in East Aurora, New York, also told supporters of President Donald Trump to "carry guns" and "buy ammunition now." 1063
