ATLANTA, Ga. – The Centers for Disease Control said Tuesday that it appears inevitable that COVID-19 will spread in United States communities. Officials said it’s no longer a matter of if, but when. Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, said during a conference call that the spread of the new coronavirus in countries other than China has officials concerned about outbreaks in the U.S. "Ultimately we expect we will see community spread in this country," said Messonier. "It’s not so much a question of if this will happen anymore, but rather more a question of exactly when this will happen and how many people in this country will have severe illness."The CDC says the agency is preparing to address the potential spread of the virus in the U.S. and it's encouraging Americans to begin planning as well. "We will maintain, for as long as practical, a dual approach where we continue measures to contain this disease, but also employ strategies to minimize the impact on our communities," said Messonier.Messonier said that officials don't know whether the spread of the disease in the U.S. would be mild or severe, but Americans should be ready for "significant disruptions" to their daily lives.“We are asking the American public to prepare for the expectation that this might be bad,” Messonnier said.If the virus begins to spread amongst Americans, the CDC says it will becomes increasingly important to implement basic precautions to prevent more infections. That includes staying home when ill and practicing respiratory and hand hygiene. Additionally, the CDC says community level intervention might include school dismissals and social distancing in other settings, like postponing or canceling large gatherings. Officials said it may become necessary for students and the workforce to meet over the internet, instead of in person.“For adults, businesses can replace in-person meetings with video or telephone conferences and increase teleworking options,” said Messonier. The virus is believed to have originated from Wuhan, China, where early patients had some link to a large seafood and live animal markets. The CDC says more than 2,400 people have died from COVID-19 worldwide, with a majority of the deaths in mainland China. However, other countries are now battling sizable outbreaks as well. Europe’s biggest outbreak is in Italy, where more than 280 people have reportedly been infected. Iran has reported at least 95 cases. And, South Korea has more than 970 cases. As of Tuesday, the CDC had confirmed 14 cases in the U.S., 12 being travel-related and two from person-to-person spread. A total of 43 cases have been confirmed in the group of people repatriated to the U.S. from either Wuhan or the Diamond Princess cruise ship off the coast of Japan, the CDC says. That's a total of 57 cases. At this time, there’s no vaccine or medicine to help stop the spread of the virus.“In the absence of a vaccine or therapy, community mitigation measures are the primary method to respond to widespread transmission and supportive care is the current medical treatment,” wrote the CDC. Symptoms of COVID-19 are similar to those of influenza (fever, cough, and shortness of breath) and the current outbreak is occurring during a time of year when respiratory illness are highly prevalent. The CDC is hoping COVID-19 is a seasonal disease like the flu, but officials are preparing in case it’s not. 3487

At a briefing by the White House's coronavirus task force, Sec. of State Mike Pompeo said that the U.S. and Mexico have agreed to end all non-essential travel between the border of the two countries. The agreement is similar to one with Canada that was announced earlier this week. Essential travel, including trade and commerce, will continue. The travel restrictions go into effect on Saturday.Pompeo also said that the CDC has ordered that all foreign nationals not be allowed into the U.S. without proper documentation. Beginning Friday night, anyone entering the country without proper documentation will be returned to either Mexico or Canada. Watch the White House briefing in the player below.Health and Human Services Sec. Alex Azar said that the CDC issued the order in an attempt to ensure proper social distancing in border detention centers. The briefing comes about an hour after Treasury Sec. Steve Mnuchin tweeted that the IRS was 956

At an elevation above 8,000 feet, Aspen Ruggerfest is taking the sport of rugby to new heights. This four-day tournament attracts athletes of all ages and genders, with players looking to show off their skills against some of the best competition in the country.“There’s a lot of US players still out here in Ruggerfest,” said Alec Parker.Parker is an Aspen legend. He’s played for his hometown team, the Gentlemen of Aspen Rugby Football Club, and represented the United States in four Rugby World Cups. Now, retired from rugby, Parker says playing in the Aspen Ruggerfest is equally as important as playing internationally.“I love this weekend. It’s the best,” Parker said of Aspen Ruggerfest. “Best weekend of the year for sure.”Now in it’s 52nd year, Aspen Ruggerfest continues to grow by attracting athletes from across the country and across the world.“The sport is fun as hell,” said former Aspen RFC coach Freddie Waititi.Waititi says rugby is the fastest growing team sport in the country, and the numbers support it. In 2014, the Sports and Fitness Industry Association reported a 350 percent growth in participation over a five-year period.“It’s fun watching the young guys that we coach being able to pick up the things that we are trying to pass on to them and actually use them,” Waititi said.Despite more people now playing their favorite sport, the Aspen team is mourning the loss of one of its own.“It’s quite a weird one this year,” said one an Aspen player. “We’re missing one very important person that’s been a part of Aspen rugby for longer than I can even remember.” On the night before the Gents first match, the team held a team dinner and dedicated it Jerry Hatem, a former Aspen player-coach, who lost his life in a snowmobile accident this summer.“(Jerry) would be sitting here having a beer after lining the field for the whole day with bruises blood all over his face,” the Aspen player said. “He just loves rugby and is a great guy.”This a game that transcends athletics, with players saying their teams are more like their families. And when the Aspen Gents took the pitch, Hatem’s family was watching from the sidelines, saying jerry would be proud.“(Jerry’s) saying it by what we’re witnessing here,” said Mike Hatem, Jerry’s brother. “This whole community just comes together.” Because whether rookie or old boy, local or import, rugby culture is all about camaraderie, and Aspen Ruggerfest embodies that, at a higher level. 2470

BALTIMORE — On a cold day in February, Evelyn Businsky was on her couch when the sliding glass door behind her spontaneously shattered."I was glad that the curtain was closed because it just burst out," Businsky said. The inside pane of the door shattered into a thousand little pieces on her living room floor. Her and her husband immediately called the remodeling company that installed the windows and doors about 20 years ago. They chose Homefix Custom Remodeling for their lifetime warranty. An estimator came out the next day but the Businskys say they were unable to get an answer on when the door would be replaced and how much it would cost. The company eventually called the couple to let them know they were going to replace the door at no cost.As for why or how the door shattered, the Businskys figured it was the combination of the polar vortex and the hot air coming from their space heater. However, Mike Geraci, director of marking and business development at Caplan Glass in Baltimore, isn't convinced that's what caused the glass to give out."I doubt very seriously because of the cold weather and heater, looks like five or six feet away, that it caused that door to explode," Gerarci said.He said it could've been stress, potentially some temperature imbalance or the materials inside the glass."One of the ingredients in float glass is nickel alloy, and if there's a large concentration of that particular ingredient in the glass, that could cause the glass to fracture or split," Geraci said. However, this is rare and uncommon."Very rare for that to happen. There's thousands and thousands of tempered glass being produced every hour," Geraci said. And yet, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission received nearly 30 reports in the last six months of shower doors, TV stands, casserole dishes and glass appliances exploding out of nowhere."There's a process called heat soaking where they take the glass, they heat it up and then they put it right into warm water and in that bath any kind of informality in the glass should make it explode in water to prevent it from happening after purchase but it's hard to say. Again, these are very rare cases," he said. When deciding on windows and doors in your home, you do have another glass option. On impact, tempered glass shatters into tiny little pieces while laminated glass splinters but stays in place. These are designed to protect the consumer from being injured. While laminated glass may appear to be a better option to protect against break-ins, tempered glass is actually four to five times stronger. Laminated glass is also typically more expensive, however, it can be replaced faster.Homefix Custom Remodeling said the Businskys door should be ready in six to eight weeks. The couple is happy it's getting taken care of, but the lengthy timeline and fluctuating weather gives them some concern."I have COPD, and if I get a cold you've got to figure it's like somebody else getting pneumonia. And if I get pneumonia, I could die," said Evelyn Businsky.Homefix Custom Remodeling said they're not an emergency glass replacement company and are unable to expedite the replacement. In an email, a spokeswoman for the company wrote: "We are eager to see the door replaced, and are doing all that we can to facilitate that outcome." They also say they tried calling the couple and left a voicemail, but never heard back. The couple disputes this. The CPSC issued a 3453
