WASHINGTON (AP) — House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says she is ordering the removal from the Capitol of portraits honoring four previous House speakers who served in the Confederacy.In a letter Thursday to the House clerk, Pelosi directed the immediate removal of portraits depicting these former speakers: Robert Hunter of Virginia, James Orr of South Carolina, and Howell Cobb and Charles Crisp, both of Georgia.Pelosi says the House was unaware of the portraits until an inventory was taken of the chamber’s statues.“We didn't know about this until we were taking inventory of the statues,” she said. “And the curator told us that there were four paintings of speakers in that and the Capitol of the United States four speakers who had served in the Confederacy.”Pelosi says that "there is no room in the hallowed halls of Congress or in any place of honor for memorializing men who embody the violent bigotry and grotesque racism of the Confederacy.″Pelosi says the portraits will be taken down in observance of Juneteenth, a June 19 holiday that celebrates the end of slavery in the U.S. 1094

VISTA (KNSD) - A Carlsbad man who allegedly drugged and sexually assaulted a 16-year-old girl and raped a woman he met online was charged Wednesday with 17 felony counts.Michael Fangman, 47, faces between 20 and 25 years in state prison if convicted of charges involving the minor, identified only as Jane Doe 1, and the woman, identified only as Jane Doe 2.Fangman was arrested shortly before 8:25 a.m. last Friday at his home, Carlsbad police Sgt. Reid Shipley said.Carlsbad police have been investigating since March when they received the first report of sexual assault. The 16-year-old girl contacted police on March 18 and alleged that she had been sexually assaulted by Fangman, who she had met online, Shipley said.The criminal complaint includes allegations that between March 11 and March 16, Jane Doe 1 was sexually assaulted and was given heroin by Fangman during that timeframe. He faces 14 counts related to Jane Doe 1, as well as three pertaining to Jane Doe 2, including forcible rape.According to the deputy district attorney, Benjamin Barlow, all of the alleged acts took place in Carlsbad in the month of March of this year. The judge ordered a no contact order with Jane Doe 1 and Jane Doe 2. "The pressure was very big on my shoulders. I got a phone call from the President of Kenya."Starting at 8:15 a.m., Kipchoge was supported by 36 pacemakers who accompanied him in alternating groups, one of the reasons the IAAF governing body will not ratify the time as a world record.The groups were also helped by a pace car with a laser beam, projecting the ideal position on the road, and they received drinks handed over by cyclists and other runners to prevent them from having to slow down."It is a great feeling to make history in sport after Sir Roger Bannister," Kipchoge said in reference to the late Briton's first sub four-minute mile in 1954.
