BEIJING, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- China's quality watchdog said on Thursday it found toxic chemicals in food products imported from Japan.     Tests conducted by Guangdong Entry-Exit inspection and quarantine institution found Japan-produced soy sauce and mustard sauce were contaminated by toluene and acetic ester, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (GAQSIQ) said on its website.     The food products were produced by three Japanese factories. But GAQSIQ didn't reveal the names of the producers.     Maximal toluene content was 0.0053 mg per kg, while acetic ester content was 0.537 mg per kg. This would risk people's health, said experts.     Toluence and acetic ester are chemicals that can be used as dyeware, paint and solvent. It will lead to headache and vomit if people eat the food tainted with them.     The GAQSIQ has ordered Chinese importers to inspect and test products of the same kind and remove them from shelves, in a bid to ensure consumer safety.     No sickness were reported in China, but earlier Japanese media said some Japanese people felt sick after eating food tainted by the two chemicals.

    BEIJING, Jan. 13, 2009 (Xinhua) -- Hu Jintao, general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, on Tuesday urged the Party's anti-corruption body to "firmly correct official wrongdoings" that harm public interests.     Addressing a plenary session of the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI), the ruling Party's internal anti-corruption body, Hu said Party officials should maintain their political integrity and lead the people to overcome difficulties amid hardships. Hu Jintao, general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, addresses the third plenary session of the 17th CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection in Beijing, capital of China, Jan. 13, 2009.     The CPC committees, governments and the Party's discipline organs at all levels had maintained a rigorous crackdown on all forms of corruption since the Party's 17th National Congress in 2007, said Hu, also Chinese president.     He called on the Party's discipline organs to focus on power abuse, bribery and misconduct, pledging that no corrupt officials would be allowed to escape punishment.     "We should be fully aware that the fight against corruption needs long-term, complicated and tough efforts," said Hu.     "In the anti-corruption efforts, we should also pay attention to both punishment and prevention and achieve effects to earn trust from the people and provide solid assurance for reform, development and stability," he said.          ATTACH IMPORTANCE TO PARTY MEMBER'S INTEGRITY     Hu said that in the face of complicated and changing international situations and domestic reforms, the integrity of officials at all levels was vital to keep steady economic growth and social harmony.     Officials' integrity and honesty would determine their behavior at work and off duty, Hu said. Officials should consciously adhere to socialist core value judgments as well as the Party's basic theories and policies.     Self-discipline and supervision must be relied on to cultivate clean and dedicated model leaders and the discipline organs should conduct unremitting education on virtue and morality, Hu said.     To realize the objectives, he urged the CCDI to carry out more education and supervision of Party officials, and ensure against abuse of authority.     Supervision and inspection should also be promoted and implemented in major decision making and deployment in accordance with the scientific outlook on development, Hu said.     The disciplinary organs should also push harder on investigations to corruption cases and deal with corruption problems in most high-risk departments or governmental affairs, he added.     Hu emphasized six aspects in the Party's anti-corruption work for immediate concentration:     -- Party officials should always ask the people for political advices, basic needs and suggestions for resolving social problems, and try harder to take practical measures to tackle public difficulties.     -- Officials should make more efforts to learn Party theories and policies and increase their capabilities to deal with complex situations by applying theory to practice.     -- Officials should always remember their duties and responsibilities endowed by the Party and people, and fulfill their assignment with more devotion.     -- Officials should hold a correct concept of political achievements by respecting and seeking truth in their work.     -- Officials should always prioritize people's interests and refrain from seeking personal gains or furthering their own interests.     -- Officials should maintain the Party's solidity and unity, and strictly abide by Party rules and regulations. They also should increase economic awareness to frugally conduct all undertakings.     Hu urged Party committees at all levels to regard strengthening education on integrity and honesty for officials as an important task in managing the Party by strict rules.     He also encouraged the Party's self-discipline organs to bravely fight all forms of corruption and illegalities, calling on Party committees to support anti-graft work.     Statistics from the commission showed that 4,960 officials above county head level were punished nationwide during the year ending last November.     The session was presided over by He Guoqiang, head of the CCDI. At present were other senior CPC officials Wu Bangguo, Wen Jiabao, Jia Qinglin, Li Changchun, Xi Jinping, Li Keqiang and Zhou Yongkang.

TAIPEI, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) -- The United Daily News, one of the biggest newspapers in Taiwan, said in an editorial on Friday that the six proposals put forward by Hu Jintao on the cross-Straits relationship are "positive" and "explicit".     The editorial said that people in Taiwan mostly hold positive opinions about the six proposals, made by General Secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee Hu Jintao on New Year's Eve, and see goodwill and understanding in them.     It noted that in Hu's address, he shows understanding that "Taiwan consciousness" does not equal to "Taiwan independence consciousness". In addition, Hu also said the mainland is willing to discuss with Taiwan "proper and reasonable arrangements" for Taiwan's participation in activities of international organizations as long as such activity does not create a scenario of "two Chinas" or "one China and one Taiwan." BEIJING, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- The two-day 7th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) was concluded here Saturday with participants reaching consensus on global financial crisis and other issues.     The meeting, attended by leaders and representatives from 45 Asian and European nations and organizations, realized its expected goal and was a great success, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said in a closing speech.     As one of the most fruitful achievements, a statement of the 7th ASEM on the international financial situation was adopted at the meeting. The two-day 7th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) was concluded at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Oct. 25, 2008.    "Leaders believed that authorities of all countries should demonstrate vision and resolution and take firm, decisive and effective measures in a responsible and timely manner to rise to the challenge of the financial crisis," said the statement.     The international community should continue to strengthen coordination and cooperation and take effective and available economic and financial measures in a comprehensive way to restore market confidence, stabilize global financial markets and promote global economic growth, it said.     According to the document, leaders supported the convening of an international summit on Nov. 15 in the United States to address the current crisis and principles of reform of the international financial system.     The summit also adopted a declaration on sustainable development.     "The adoption of various cooperation proposals shows and proves again the interior impetus for strengthening dialogue at the ASEM and great potential for extending cooperation," Wen said.     Amid the global financial turmoil, the ASEM has been widely regarded as an opportunity for Asian and European leaders to find a solution.     French President Nicholas Sarkozy called the meeting very "helpful" for Asia and Europe to tackle the global financial crisis and build up common cause.     "We had discussed nearly all of the topics concerned by the two continents including the most difficult issues," he said at a press conference at the end of the meeting.     Premier Wen told the press conference the need of confidence, cooperation and responsibility to find a solution to the global financial meltdown.     "We are glad to see that many countries have made their efforts and achieved some results. But it is not enough as we now see it, and more endeavors are needed," said Wen.     All countries, especially developed ones, should take measures as soon as possible to stabilize the financial market and build public confidence, he said.     Financial innovation could help develop the economy, but financial supervision is even more important for the security of the financial system, he added.     The premier also declared that China would actively attend the Nov.15 financial summit.

SHANGHAI, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) -- China's first local financial tribunal opened on Thursday in the People's Court of Shanghai Pudong New Area.     The tribunal, with three judges, will accept both individual and institutional civil cases, with no limit on claims, said a judicial official.     Lin Xiaojun, vice chief judge of the tribunal, said the global financial crisis has triggered an increase in financial disputes.     Financial innovation and opening-up had also seen a wider variety of cases, including finance product and company stock ownership disputes, said Lin.     Ding Shouxing, president of the People's Court of Shanghai Pudong New Area said the tribunal would also provide legal services for financial institutions, release case analyses for market information, and make proposals to prevent and resolve financial risks.     The tribunal would hire financial experts as assessors, and setup a consultative team to guarantee just, efficient, professional and clean hearings.     The Ministry of Justice has announced no plans to extend the tribunals to the other parts of the country.     Since 2006, the People's Court of Pudong New Area has heard 5,603 financial cases, including those relating to bank loans, credit cards, securities and assurance, involving more than 1.6 billion yuan (242 million U.S. dollars).     The Chinese government approved Pudong New Area, situated in eastern Shanghai, as a trial base for opening-up in 1990. Since then, 530 domestic and foreign financial institutions have been established there.
