Within a few days her creative crusts grabbed the attention of Anna Sui, one of New York City's most recognized fashion designers."First thing I said, was how can I confirm this is really you," she stated. "I found out she wanted to use the pies in New York Spring Fashion Week."It took Freidt more than 15 hours to make the pie fashions now garnering national attention."She used the pies prominently in her media, I was shocked," she said. But Freidt hasn't forgotten those here at home. Pedro Rios says the idea that immigrants are coming to this country solely to be a burden to the United States is absolutely false. Rios is the Executive Director of American Friends Service Committee – a national organization that has worked on immigration and border issues for 42 years. He says he is against a new rule that disqualifies immigrants from a green card if they use certain government benefits, because he says it's causing people to drop out of benefit services they do qualify for. “In this case, prenatal care is not a targeted benefit. However, someone might decide to stop receiving that care simply because they fear that it would place them at the crosshairs of some sort of immigration enforcement operation,” Rios said. Dulce Garcia, an immigration attorney and DACA recipient, agrees with Rios. She says the rule has a two-fold impact: it denies more people the ability to qualify as a legal permanent resident, and now people are afraid of accessing other public benefits. She knows from personal experience when her family had to live inside a car and with very little food. “We’re going to see more people like my parents who were afraid of accessing public benefits and decided to risk our health essentially by remaining unsheltered and by struggling with food,” Garcia said. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is a food program that's among those included in the rule. If immigrants collect those benefits more than 12 months in three years, they can't get a green card - and become a permanent resident. “We all fall on hard times. My family fell on hard times, and I wish that we would have had people telling us ‘it’s OK, it’s OK to receive help’ so that we would be safe.” As the executive director of Border Angels, a nonprofit that advocates for the immigrant community, Garcia says she tries to empower immigrants with accurate information so they know what benefits they’re still eligible for. However, there are people in favor of the rule, like Agnes Gibboney, who was born in Hungary. Her family entered the U.S. in 1970. “When we immigrated to the U.S., my parents had to sign a document stating they would not apply for any public assistance. That my father could support my mother, my brother and myself,” Gibboney said. Gibboney says she doesn't like the idea of immigrants using taxpayer dollars for services. “The importance of being fully vetted is for the government to know who is coming into this country. To make sure you are of good moral standing, to make sure you’re going to be a good citizen, and make sure that you’re gonna be a plus to this country,” Gibboney said. When it announced the new rule, the Department of Homeland Security called self-sufficiency a core American value. On the other hand, Rios says public benefits might be necessary in order for some immigrants to eventually become self-sufficient.“What we’ve seen in the past is when their needs aren’t being met, then it’s harder for them to support themselves in other ways,” Rios said.  3052

The owner of Nighttown in Cleveland shared the generous gift one customer left them Sunday, expressing gratitude for the random act of kindness.“We've actually had a really, really good summer. People have supported us unbelievably,” Nighttown owner Brendan Ring said. “That's what made it even more difficult for me to make the decision to hit the pause button here again until the complications are sort of under control.”Nighttown closed Sunday, voluntarily shutting down in response to the rising COVID-19 cases in the area and will remain closed until sometime in the spring, according to Ring.“It's going to be a hard winter in the restaurant business,” Ring said.Just before the restaurant closed Sunday, a customer dining with his family approached the bar and ordered a single beer.“He literally took two small sips out of it, signed his check and left,” bartender Heather Sandow said.After signing his check, the man handed his credit card receipt to Ring on his way out.“He put it down next to me and he wished me well and said, 'Share this with your staff,'” Ring said.Ring quickly noticed the tip amount.“I quickly glanced down and it looked like a 0 tip. And I go, ‘Wow, that's a nice tip for a guy that just had a beer,’” Ring said. “Then I put my reading glasses on. My eyes almost popped out of my head.”The generous customer left a ,000 tip on the single beer purchase. For those curious, that is a 42,735% tip.“One girl point blank didn't believe what she was staring at,” Ring said. “She said, ‘No, that's not real.’”Ring said he ran after the man, thinking there had been a mistake. The man confirmed the tip was intentional.“That gentleman that left a tip yesterday, he’d be indicative of the type of customer we have here in Cleveland Heights. Just true, loyal and giving,” Ring said.Sandow said the relationship between customers and staff for the last 25 years is what sets Nighttown apart.“It's not all about money. I think personally, it's more about the gesture that was made and the unselfishness that was demonstrated,” Sandow said. “The customers have been coming here over the years. They do care about us.”As Ring temporarily closed the doors to his business and is now planning for the future, he said he will reflect on the parting words of the kind customer.“We'll be back. BALTIMORE, Md. – In looking for creative inspiration, engineering student Qiyuan Fu finds it in a box, with an interesting occupant. Inside: a real, live snake. “We can definitely learn something from them,” Fu said. The snake is a Kingsnake, which is native to deserts in California and Mexico and serves as the model for a new robot, developed in a mechanical engineering lab at Johns Hopkins University. “We added this one directional wheel, so it can only rotate in one direction,” said Fu, as he demonstrated how the robot moves. The “snake robot,” and its colleague, the “roach robot,” are so-called “bio-inspired robots” – taking their cues from mother nature. “We studied snakes here because they are exceptionally good at moving through almost any terrain,” said Johns Hopkins assistant professor Chen Li. Li said it’s an idea with practical applications: the robots could potentially help in search and rescue, by making their way through tight spaces to find people trapped in rubble. “People have actually tried to build snake robots for several decades,” he said. In the past, though, the robots fell short once they left the lab environments, unable to make it through different types of terrain. This time – using specially positioned cameras – they’ve observed how the snakes and roaches move across different surfaces and attempted to mimic what nature already does so well. “What's really unique about our work is that we focus on understanding the physical principles – starting by looking at animals,” Li said. “And then by understanding such principles, we can apply them to the to the robot.” The snakes have 200 vertebrae; the snake robot has 20 segments. It’s progress, these engineers say, with more to go. “There’s still going to be a lot of challenges ahead,” Li said.The engineering lab is now looking into modeling robots based on lizards. That’s because of their ability to leap across surfaces, which could further help robots make their way across uneven terrain. 2008
