BEIJING, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- China's restrictions on rare earth industry will assist in protecting the environment, Chinese Commerce Minister Chen Deming said here Saturday."Mass-extraction of rare earth will cause great damage to the environment, that's why China has tightened controls over rare earth production, exploration and trade, " Chen told media during the third China-Japan high-level economic dialogue. He said what China had done was also consistent with the rules of the World Trade Organization.China is the largest producer of rare earth elements, which are used in hybrid car motors, computer hardware and components for high-tech products.Chen said the restriction policy would also have an adverse impact on the Chinese market, where parts for Japanese products were assembled. He stressed that in order to protect the country's environment, China had no choice but to take such measures.During the dialogue, Chen also called on Japan to ease high technology export controls to China and simplify visa procedures for Chinese business people.Japan had expressed concerns over China's export of mineral resources, independent innovation systems and information security policies during the meetings.Chen said, through the dialogue, that the two sides had enhanced communications and increased mutual understanding over these issues.

WASHINGTON, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Barack Obama said Monday that China's rapid economic development is in the interest of U.S. economy."It's good for us that China has done well," Obama said at a town-hall-style meeting telecast live on CNBC before heading to Pennsylvania to raise money for a Democratic Senate candidate. His address is in line with U.S. Secretary of Treasury Timothy Geithner's testimony to the Congress last Thursday."We have very significant economic interests in our relationship with China," Geithner said, "a strong and growing China benefits the United States, just as a strong and growing United States is good for China."In responding to a question about China's currency issue, Obama said that China's currency is lower than the market says that it should be, but trade is in the benefit for both sides."I just want to make sure trade is good for American businesses and American workers," Obama said."We are going to continue to insist that on this issue, and on all trade issues between us and China, that it is a two-way street, " he said.Facing November elections shaped by voter anger at the sour economy, U.S. lawmakers are weighing bills that would slap sanctions on Chinese goods, amid accusations that China keeps its currency -- and thereby its exports -- artificially cheap. The Obama administration acknowledged that China's imports supported the global economy and contributed substantially to recovery around the world. With over 1.3 billion people and an economy continuing to grow at or near double-digit rates, China is the U.S.' fastest-growing major overseas market.China's record of bringing hundreds of millions out of poverty, building a rapidly growing middle class, and now its efforts to encourage growth led by domestic demand, ultimately mean more demand for American goods and services. In order to pull the economy out of recession, Obama launched National Export Initiative (NEI) in March and set the goal of doubling the U.S. export in five years and creating two million jobs in the country. The Obama administration is clear that the vast Chinese market is a crucial part to fulfill the goal."Increasing opportunities for U.S. firms and workers through expanded trade and investment with China will be an important part of the success of the President's National Export Initiative and our efforts to support job growth more broadly."According to the Treasury Department, China is a critical market for a broad range of American products, from agriculture, to manufacturing, to services.China was the largest market for U.S. soybeans last year, importing over 9 billion dollars. In the manufacturing sector, the United States has already exported nearly 3.5 billion dollars in aircraft to China this year alone, and U.S. exports of automobiles and parts to China have grown over 200 percent. The issues in China and U.S. economic relations and trade should be properly solved through consultations on an equal footing. Exerting pressure cannot solve the issue. Rather, it may lead to the contrary, China's Foreign Ministry said recently.

BRUSSELS, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has elaborated China's positions and perspectives on various issues, including the Chinese yuan appreciation and the investment environment, at the sixth China-Europe Business Summit and other occasions. At the business summit held Wednesday, Wen said China's trade surplus was explained by the specific structures of the economies involved in international trade instead of the exchange rate of the yuan."The trade issue should not be politicized. It is an issue of the (trade) structure," the premier said.He said China was never in pursuit of trade surplus, but in pursuit of balanced and sustainable trade. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao addresses the 6th China-European Union Business Summit in Brussels, capital of Belgium, Oct. 6, 2010.The world will by no means benefit from an appreciation of the yuan by 20 percent to 40 percent -- as the U.S. has demanded -- because it will damage the Chinese economy, and the Chinese economy contributed about 50 percent of the global economic growth last year, according to him.Wen urged the European entrepreneurs not to pressure China on the yuan's appreciation, saying China "will stick fast to the exchange rate reform. We will gradually allow more flexibility in the yuan exchane exchange rate."He assured European investors of a good investment environment in China, saying China would stick to its reform and opening up policiesHe said foreign businesses operating in China will enjoy the same national treatment as Chinese enterprises do on issues related to intellectual property, independent innovation, and government procurement. Also on Wednesday, Premier Wen attended the 13th China-EU Summit, co-chaired by him, European Council President Herman Van Rompuy and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso.

PYONGYANG, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- A delegation of senior Chinese military officers watched the "Arirang" performance here Saturday night as part of celebrations to mark the 60th anniversary of the entry of the Chinese People's Volunteers (CPV) into the Korean War front. The delegation, led by Guo Boxiong, vice chairman of China's Central Military Commission, is on a four-day visit to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK). They were joined at the show by Kim Yong Nam, president of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly of the DPRK.Before the show, Guo met Kim and a number of other DPRK leaders, including Choe Yong Rim, premier of the cabinet, and Kim Yong Chun, vice-chairman of the National Defence Commission.Guo hailed the DPRK's attention to its relations with China. He said the visit of the delegation was to implement the important consensus reached between Chinese President Hu Jintao and the DPRK's top leader Kim Jong Il.China would work with the DPRK side to make an active contribution to the continuous promotion of the Sino-DPRK friendship, Guo said.Kim Yong Nam warmly welcomed the visit of the Chinese delegation. The DPRK cherished its friendship with China. To consolidate and develop the relations was the firm will of the DPRK, Kim said. The "Arirang", a mass gymnastic and artistic show with some 100,000 performers, showcased the achievements made by the DPRK people in socialist construction, and their love of the fatherland, aspiration for reunification and peace. The CPV entered the DPRK on Oct. 25, 1950, about four months after the Korean War broke out.In an article marking the anniversary, the DPRK's official KCNA news agency said Thursday that the CPV not only displayed a spirit of self-sacrifice and heroism but also promoted friendship.
