SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Violent crime dropped in San Diego County in the first half of the year for the first time in six years, even though the region saw a spike in the number of homicides, according to a report released Tuesday by the San Diego Association of Governments.The report by SANDAG's Criminal Justice Research Division found that the mid-year number of violent crimes in the county was 5,356 in 2020, down from 5,545 last year.Mid-year violent crime totals from recent years were 5,510 in 2018; 5,421 in 2017; 5,361 in 2016; and 5,330 in 2015. The five-year increase amounted to a 4% bump in violent crime.The report found there were 52 homicides in the first half of 2020, a dramatic increase from 38 homicides measured at the halfway point last year.A month-by-month breakdown of the homicides this year showed that seven were recorded in January, three in February, 11 each in March and April, and 10 each in May and June. In 2019, January had five homicides, February had six, March and April each had six homicides, May had eight and June had seven.Among homicides in which motive could be determined, 22% were attributed to robbery -- compared to 4% last year -- and 3% were attributed to gangs -- down from 19% last year, according to the report. No homicides were attributed to domestic violence this year, while 19% of last year's homicide were considered domestic violence-related.The report also found that overall domestic violence cases reported to law enforcement in 2020 increased each month from January through March, then decreased slightly in April and May before rising 3% in June, compared to the same time in 2019."The zig-zag percentages of reports in domestic violence regionwide could be attributed to the pandemic," SANDAG director of research and program management Cynthia Burkem said. "When you factor in social distancing, including families isolating together during stressful times and with less contact with mandated reporters, it could affect an individual's willingness to report a crime to police."Reports of rape fell to 432 after reaching 539 at the midway point of 2019. Further analysis showed the biggest month-to-month changes from this year compared to last year were seen in April and May.The number of reported robberies dropped 10% -- from 1,410 in 2019 to 1,268 this year -- while the number of aggravated assaults increased 1% -- from 3,572 in 2019 to 3,604 this year.Reports of property crime totaled 24,512 in the first half of this year, down from 27,239 during the same period in 2019.In 2020, 3,624 burglaries were reported throughout the county, a 3% drop from the first half of 2019. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A family of five was displaced after a fire erupted in their City Heights kitchen Tuesday.The fire began in the kitchen of a home in the 3700 block of 41st St. According to San Diego Fire-Rescue Capt. Juan Flores, the fire appeared to begin accidentally in the cooking area as food was being prepared.Six units responded, keeping the fire isolated to the kitchen of the residence, Flores added.The family, two adults and three children, were displaced by the fire. The Red Cross is currently helping them.No other units on the property were damaged. 576

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Hillcrest man in search of his stolen bikes made a startling discovery when he stepped into an abandoned church.Early Wednesday morning, surveillance video shows two men stealing three pricey bikes after cutting a metal lock for a garage, as Wilbur Kookmyer slept inside his condo on Georgia Street."Felt angry, felt violated," said Kookmyer.A day later, Kookmyer went in search of his bikes and he didn't go far. Next door - inside an abandoned church at Park Boulevard and Meade Avenue - a security guard agreed to let him have a look.Room after room, he found belongings left behind: clothes, food, and even a drone. In one room is a makeshift bed. There is a bike in another, but it's not his."It's a homeless hotel. They come and go as they please. Free of charge," said Kookmyer.But mostly, what Kookmyer sees is filth."Smells like urine and feces. Needles and trash. It's just disgusting. Looks like a landfill and a health hazard," said Kookmyer.The church was sold last year to a developer. LMC North Park Holdings is still awaiting permits to demolish the site. In the meantime, it's become a campground for transients."Constantly coming and going. Get everything boarded up, but breaking back in every time," said Kookmyer.While Kookmyer was recording, they ran into several people, who were escorted off the property. Kookmeyer says since the church was sold, he's seen a spike in crime - from vandalism to home and car break-ins."My next-door neighbor caught someone breaking in and using his shower," said Kookmyer.Wilbur says it's time for the demolition to happen and for security to be stepped up. "There's no excuse for it being this filthy and creating that much trouble for people around the church," said Kookmyer.A spokesperson for LMC North Park Holdings issued this statement:“We share the concerns of the neighbors and are working diligently to better secure the site until we are able to obtain the permits necessary to begin demolition. The security team, which is contracted to be on site 24/7, is having some difficulty, so we are in the process of obtaining additional resources to better control access. SAN DIEGO (CNS) — Two men who were allegedly running an illegal hash oil lab inside a Lemon Grove warehouse were charged by federal prosecutors Friday.Adam Ledesma and Jared Hoffman are charged with manufacturing around 166 kilograms of hash oil inside the building raided by Drug Enforcement Administration agents on Thursday.The hash oil, valued at more than .75 million, was seized along with ``sophisticated laboratory equipment'' valued at more than million, according to the DEA.In the criminal complaint filed Friday, DEA Special Agent James Gillis wrote that DEA agents regularly surveilled the building over the past month, and observed Ledesma and Hoffman regularly entering the building.There were ``no visible indications of commercial or manufacturing operations operating out of the building,'' according to Gillis, who said that on May 14, he found a number of paint buckets, stainless steel pots and other items he alleged were consistent with manufacturing cannabis inside two dumpsters in the building's loading dock. The building's electricity bills dating back to last May were also ``excessive and consistent with the amount of electricity required to operate equipment commonly used for concentrated cannabis extraction and/or indoor marijuana cultivation.''Search warrants were served Thursday for the premises, which has no license for marijuana cultivation from either the state or San Diego County, according to the DEA.Authorities said it was the sixth hash oil lab in San Diego County dismantled by federal authorities within the past three weeks. Explosions at two of those labs sent four people to hospitals with serious burns, the DEA said.The agency alleged that the Lemon Grove lab was in particular danger of an explosion or fire, due to high combustible gas readings at the premises, as well as a large amount of ethanol found at the lab. 1886

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A family killed in a Logan Heights house fire in October was laid to rest Friday.Jose Antonio Romero Mayo, 44, Nicolasa Mayo-Cortes, 46, and daughter Iris, 21, all died from their injuries following the Oct. 13 fire.Funeral services were held at Saint Anthony of Padua in National City Friday morning.RELATED: Family's oldest son charged in Logan Heights house fire deathsTwo other surviving family members, Wendy and Angel, were out of the hospital and in attendance.After the church service, a funeral procession drove by the house the family once called home.
