SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer has identified a park-and-ride lot in Scripps Ranch as a perfect place for new affordable housing, but neighboring businesses worry the plan will drive away their customers."You solve one problem and create ten new ones. There’s seven businesses that are going to suffer," said Yannis Pihas, owner of Yanni's Bar & Grill.Pihas says his customers, as well as visitors to the two hotels in the center, frequently use the park-and-ride because there is limited parking otherwise. While he's attempted to speak with city leaders about his concerns, so far he says he has not been given any indication that the housing project will include parking that the businesses can use.ABC 10News reached out to the city. A spokesperson says the project is still in the early process of planning and that details on potential parking have yet to be worked out. The spokesperson also said the public can always bring concerns to the area's planning board and that there will be more opportunities for public input once the plan is prepared.In a statement, Mayor Faulconer said, "There is a great need in our community for housing that gives folks a real chance to have a place of their own, but also the support system they need to stay housed. This public-private partnership will help transform these vacant City-owned properties into opportunities that will change the lives of so many of our fellow San Diegans for the better."The plan is expected to be finalized and brought to the City Council for a vote in 2021. 1566

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County recorded its first death of the flu season this week, a 52-year-old woman.County health officials say the woman had underlying medical conditions and it's not known if she had been vaccinated or not."Any death is tragic. Our condolences go out to the individual’s family," Wilma Wooten, County public health officer, said. Vaccinations generally take about two weeks for immunity to develop.In addition, residents should make sure they wash their hands thoroughly and often, use hand sanitizer, and stay home if they are sick. 1128

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Rep. Susan Davis of the 53rd Congressional District won’t seek re-election in 2020, the Congresswoman announced Wednesday. Davis was first elected to Congress in 2000. “I have struggled to make this very difficult decision. I will not seek another term in Congress. My decision today represents a desire to live and work ‘at home’ in San Diego,” she said. Davis is currently the second highest-ranking Democrat on both the House Education and Labor Committee and the House Armed Service Committee. Among measures recently supported by Davis is the Green New Deal, introduced by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. She also helped spearhead the repeal of the “don’t ask, don’t tell,” a Clinton-era policy which allowed LGTBQ people to serve in the military only if they remained in the closet.“It makes us a better military, a better country, and I was very happy to be a part of that,” said Davis.So far, only two other candidates have officially entered the race. Jose Caballero, a Navy veteran, filed earlier this year and has raised ,900 as of June.Joaquín Vázquez, the son of undocumented immigrants, has also filed to run, but has not submitted any fundraising documents yet to the FEC.Both are Democrats with no previous experience as elected officials.In 2018, Davis faced off against Republican challenger, Morgan Murtaugh, beating her by a nearly 40% margin. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police Department is investigating a video sent to several employees that depicts Hitler and makes "offensive" remarks about an investigation into officers eating inside a restaurant amid stay-at-home orders.The video was created after an internal investigation was launched over officers eating inside a restaurant during the state's stay-at-home order, said SDPD public-affairs Lt. Shawn Takeuchi. Those orders banned indoor dining at the time.Takeuchi says whoever created the video was clearly angry over the department's investigation into that incident.The video uses a clip from the 2004 film "Downfall," a German film depicting the final days of Adolf Hitler during World War II. A scene in the film showing an enraged Hitler yelling at military officials is used in various parody videos online.Takeuchi said the video being investigated added subtitles that, "negatively portrays the community and department leadership. The video also makes a homophobic comment regarding the Mayor."Mayor Todd Gloria, who took office this month, is the city's first openly gay mayor.The video surfaced on Saturday and began to circulate. Numerous department members who received the video alerted their supervisors. Internal Affairs was notified and started an investigation.Takeuchi called the video "extremely disturbing and offensive.""At this time, we do not know if this video was made by someone in the department or by someone who does not work at SDPD. We are still investigating to determine who was involved in creating it," said Takeuchi. "The department will not tolerate hateful speech of any kind. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Resources are available throughout San Diego County for victims of domestic violence who believe their situation may turn life threatening.“There’s nothing more tragic than this happening. This is exactly what we never want to see happen again,” said Heather Finlay with the YWCA. Finlay says she was devastated after learning of the mother and her children killed over the weekend. YWCA offers an emergency shelter and transitional housing for parents and families dealing with domestic violence. According to SANDAG, in 2018, more than 17,000 domestic violence incidents were reported in San Diego County. “Leaving an intimate partnership is never easy especially if there are children involved,” said Yvette Lopez-Cooper with the San Diego Family Justice Center. The order doesn’t become active until the abuser is served and made aware of the action. “Many times, these court orders do work and the violent behaviors stops. A safety care plan includes having a packed bag somewhere safe with clothes and copies of personal documents and planning an escape route.
