(KGTV) — Avocado lovers at two southern California colleges are in for a treat — if they're willing to take on the "responsibility."Researchers at Loma Linda University and the University of California, Los Angeles are looking for candidates to eat avocados in large and in small quantities — in the name of science, of course.Participants of HAT, the Habitual diet and Avocado Trial, will be paid 0 for their participation in the six-month trial. But the catch is candidates will be randomly assigned whether they stuff their diet with avocados or just eat two per month.RELATED: San Diego County's record heat may prove devastating to avocado cropThe test group will be given 16 avocados every two weeks and be required to eat one a day throughout the study. The control group will be assigned to eat no more than two avocados per month during that same time period.Researchers hope to learn more about how avocados affect health, energy, and metabolism, and test whether it truly is a magical fruit as past studies have suggested.HAT participants must be: 1099

(KGTV) -- As Californians try to rebound from this pandemic, many have turned to an online group to get answers about unemployment and benefits.Erica Chan started the Facebook group “Unofficial CA unemployment help” in March. She is in the film industry, which has mostly been shut down during this pandemic. With the help of others, like Ruddy Salazar, they have grown the page to more than 40,000 members.Salazar knows the frustration of dealing with the Employment Development Department firsthand. He has been on both disability and unemployment. “I’ve actually had to call three times now. The first two times took around 300 calls,” Salazar said. “I think it’s frustrating to see that this many people need that help. That our government isn’t there,” Chan said. Questions on the Facebook page range from the application process, identity verification, benefit extensions, and how to actually reach someone in the EDD office to help. They hope the group can give people an avenue to avoid having to call the EDD. Chan also started a separate website to help centralize all the questions about unemployment that she has seen over the past several weeks. “I like to feel like we’re providing that kind of service of generating that community and cultivating it,” Salazar said. 1288

(KGTV) - Are Chinese soldiers really placing a needle or pin in their uniform collar with the point facing the neck?Yes.This came to light from a recent picture posted on Twitter by "Discover and Know," which explained it's done to help soldiers keep their posture. However, not all soldiers are forced to do this.A 2009 New York Times article said this is a corrective measure only imposed on soldiers who have trouble maintaining the proper posture. 458

(KGTV) -- Adults in their mid-20s are now more likely to live with a parent than with a spouse, according to an Apartment List report. Using data from the U.S. Census Bureau, the report found that 50 years ago, 76 percent of 26-year-olds in America lived with their spouse. Today, only 24 percent of 26-year-olds live with a spouse while they are more likely to live with a parent. The bureau also found that 17 percent of 26-year-olds live with an unmarried partner, 15 percent live with a non-family roommate and 10 percent live alone. In 2007, the year before the collapse of the housing market bubble, the composition of housing began to change.According to Apartment List, the economic recession, ballooning student debt and lack of affordable housing in cities with job opportunities placed pressure on young adults who, in previous generations, would have been able to start their own households. So what about the future? Apartment List says it expects the trend to continue as housing costs skyrocket. As rents rise, the site says roommates and co-living arrangements will become even more appealing. Despite the discouraging trend, there are solutions. A housing development in the South Bay aims to give San Diego renters a better chance to become homeowners. For those who are teachers, San Diego could begin to build affordable housing for employees and teachers struggling to make ends meet. The solutions come as San Diego home sales rise after a steady decline. 1486

(KGTV) – A bill to end the retail sale of dogs, cats, and rabbits in California is heading to Gov. Gavin Newsom's desk for approval.Assembly Bill 2152, known as "Bella’s Act," would ban the retail sale of dogs, cats, and rabbits, while allowing stores to partner with rescues and shelters for adoption events. The bill stops pet stores from receiving any money from adoption transactions or from using the store or its resources in connection with adoption events.Assemblymember Todd Gloria, of San Diego, introduced the bill in February 2020. The bill is sponsored by the San Diego Humane Society.RELATED:San Diego area puppy stores accused of selling dogs from puppy millsFake animal rescue group sued for alleged "puppy laundering scheme"San Diego-area pet stores cited for illegal puppy sales"The mass breeding operations of puppy mills are unhealthy and inhumane. We don’t want animals experiencing that cruelty in California," said Assemblymember Todd Gloria. "Bella’s Act will finally fulfill our state’s promise to end the illicit puppy mill industry and encourage pet retailers to partner with rescues and shelters for adoption events. I urge the Governor to sign this bill and ensure we no longer tolerate or facilitate puppy mill cruelty in this state."While California implemented a ban on the sale of dogs, cats, and rabbits in retail stores in 2019, unless the animals were obtained from a shelter or rescue group, some retails utilized a loophole in the law by importing animals from outside the state for sale.Bella's Act was named after a corgi named "Bella" who was illegally bred in a puppy mill, before being sold in a San Diego County pet store where she was advertised as a rescue animal. Bella sold for thousands of dollars. Her owner says the dog was declawed while in the puppy mill and developed severe bronchitis that led to costly medical bills.Bella has since recovered but still suffers from anxiety.San Diego Humane Society President and CEO Dr. Gary Weitzman said, “We are thrilled with the passage of AB 2152, Bella’s Act, to close loopholes in the law that allowed unscrupulous pet store owners to continue to ship puppy mill puppies into our state for sale. Thanks to Assemblymembers Gloria and O’Donnell, California will finally end the retail sales of dogs, cats and rabbits once and for all. We look forward to receiving Governor Newsom’s signature and to the impact this critical legislation will have on the importation and sale of inhumanely bred animals in our state.” 2518
