BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- China and the United States issued a joint statement in Beijing Tuesday, promising that the two countries would "take concrete steps" to advance "sustained and reliable" military-to-military relations in the future.     "The two sides will actively implement various exchange and cooperation programs agreed between the two militaries, including by increasing the level and frequency of exchanges," according to the joint statement issued after Chinese President Hu Jintao met with visiting U.S. President Barack Obama.     The two sides commended the outcomes of the visit to the U.S. by General Xu Caihou, vice chairman of the Chinese Central Military Commission, in October this year.     Preparations would be made for the visit to the U.S. by General Chen Bingde, chief of the General Staff of China's People's Liberation Army, and the visits to China by Robert Gates, the U.S. Secretary of Defense, and Admiral Michael Mullen, chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, the statement showed.     The goal of these efforts, according to the statement, is to improve the Chinese and U.S. militaries' capabilities for practical cooperation and foster greater understanding of each other's intentions and of the international security environment.     Obama is in Beijing for a four-day state visit to China that started in Shanghai Sunday night.

MANILA, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- China's top political adviser, Jia Qinglin, and Philippines Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile pledged to boost cooperation between the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and the Philippine Senate when they met here Thursday.     Jia, chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, said China-Philipines ties had witnessed healthy development since the two countries established diplomatic ties in 1975.     "China and the Philippines share broad common interests," Jia said, highlighting the enhanced mutual political trust, booming economic and trade ties, frequent humanitarian and cultural exchanges and close coordination on international and regional issues. He will also visit Peru, Ecuador and Brazil.

WASHINGTON, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- The military-to-military ties between the United States and China have a vital role to play in the development of an active, cooperative and comprehensive bilateral relationship, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told retired generals from both countries here on Thursday.     In a meeting with participants of an exchange forum between retired generals of the two countries, Clinton said President Barack Obama attaches great importance to the growth of interactions between the two militaries. Exchanges between retired generals of the two militaries, Clinton said, could play an important role in facilitating a healthy development of military-to-military relationship between the United States and China.     Kurt Campbell, assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, said at a separate meeting with the retired generals that the Obama administration fully supports exchanges of this kind and hopes that such interactions could continue on a regular basis.     Through in-depth and extensive dialogues of this kind, Campbell said, the two militaries could increase mutual understanding and trust and promote growth of constructive cooperation between the two sides.     Xiong Guangkai, former vice-chief of general staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, is heading the Chinese delegation.

BEIJING, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) -- In cold weather, 45 Japanese war orphans revisiting China to thank their Chinese foster families received a warm welcome in Beijing.     Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met them, mostly in their seventies, in the Zhongnanhai compound Wednesday. Premier Wen invited the orphans to Zhongnanhai for talks and also accompanied them on a visit to the former residence and office of the late Premier Zhou Enlai inside the compound, who were much concerned about the war orphanage issue. BEIJING, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese vice premier Li Keqiang has called for efforts to build the South-to-North Water Diversion Project into a water-efficient and environment-friendly project.     Li made the remarks at a meeting held by the State Council on Tuesday, saying the government should stick to policies regarding resource-conservation and environment-protection in the construction work.     Li ordered relevant departments to intensify their efforts on pollution control and eco-environment protection in both the water source area and areas along the project in the course of construction.     Li, who is also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, stressed that a good job on the resettlement of residents is essential.     Addressing the meeting, vice premier Hui Liangyu ordered attaching great importance to quality and safety, strengthening pollution treatment and properly resettling local residents.     Launched in 2002, the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, consisting of eastern, middle and western routes, is designed to divert water from the water-rich south of the country, mainly the Yangtze River, to the dry north.     By the end of October, the government has invested 34 billion yuan (or 4.98 billion U.S. dollars) in the eastern and middle routes, and part of the project has contributed to alleviate the water strain in Beijing.
