SAN FRANCISCO, April 22 (Xinhua) -- Apple and Google collect smartphone users' location information as part of their race to build massive databases, The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday after analyzing data and documents.According to the report, security analysts with the newspaper found that Apple's iPhone and smartphones running Google's Android operating system regularly transmit users' locations back to the two companies respectively, which is part of their race to build databases capable of pinpointing people's locations via smartphones.A report by research firm Gartner indicated that the market for location-based services is expected to rise to 8.3 billion U.S. dollars in 2014 from the current 2.9 billion dollars. In the case of Google, a security analyst with The Wall Street Journal said an HTC Android phone collected name, location, signal strength of any nearby Wi-Fi networks, and a unique phone identifier every few seconds and transmitted the data to Google at least several times an hour."All location sharing on Android is opt-in by the user," Google said in a statement to technology blog site All Things Digital, in response to the concern that how Android system uses location information."We provide users with notice and control over the collection, sharing and use of location in order to provide a better mobile experience on Android devices. Any location data that is sent back to Google location servers is anonymous and is not tied or traceable to a specific user," said the statement.Worries on the iPhone tracking issue surfaced on Wednesday after two British researchers announced at a technology conference in California that iPhone has been collecting users' location information and storing the data for extended periods of time. The researchers said starting on June 21 2010, after the release of iOS 4 mobile operating system, iPhones began logging and storing location information in a file, which shows the users' latitude and longitude and is timestamped to the second. They noted the information is not encrypted on the phone or on the iPhone backups made by iTunes and the file is also persistent, transferring itself to a new iOS device when the old one is replaced. They added they had no evidence that the file was being transmitted to Apple. On Thursday, U.S. congressman Edward Markey reacted angrily to the news in a letter to Apple CEO Steve Jobs, which is posted on Markey's official website.Markey asked Jobs to make a response within 15 business days or no later than May 12, saying "Apple needs to safeguard personal location information of its users to ensure that an iPhone doesn't become an iTrack."Apple has made no comment on the issue so far, but a letter it sent to U.S. Congress last July came under spotlight. In the letter, Apple said it collects Wi-Fi and GPS information when the phone is searching for a cellular connection and gathers the data to help build a "database with known location information."

BEIJING, March 28 (Xinhuanet) -- Google Inc. is working with MasterCard Inc. and Citigroup Inc to develop a technology that could make mobile payments, according to media reports Monday. The new technology named "Nexus S Android" is embedded in Android mobile devices and allows customers to make purchases by waving their smartphones in front of a small reader at the checkout counter.Credit-card reader producer VeriFone Systems Inc, also involved in the new payment service, is developing contact-less devices that could allow people to pay with a wave or tap of credit card or a tap of smartphone. To use the service, holders of Citigroup-issued debit and credit cards must activate a mobile-payment application developed for one current model of Android phones. More models will be coming as the technology advances.Besides mobile payment, consumers would also be able to get targeted ads or discount offers, manage credit-card accounts and track spending through an application on their smartphones.Due to the deliberate design of the technology, customers have no need to worry about the security of their payment information. Nick Holland, a mobile-transactions analyst at Yankee Group, said the new technology is more sophisticated than credit cards with a magnetic stripe. With the coming service, Google is aiming to boost its advertising business by offering retailers more data about their customers and help them target ads and discount offers to mobile-device users near their stores. An insider told that Google was not expected to get a cut of the transaction fees. The service is expected to be released this year. Once released, it will broaden the uses of smartphones for everyday activities—from chatting to emailing to shopping.

WASHINGTON, April 13 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced on Wednesday that it has approved the cPAX Aneurysm Treatment System for surgery on brain aneurysms that are difficult to manage because of their size and shape. An aneurysm is a bulge in the wall of a blood vessel, which can rupture as it increases in size, causing hemorrhage or death. Brain aneurysms often produce no symptoms until they grow and press on nerves in the brain, or until they begin to leak blood or rupture.Aneurysms can be repaired in two ways: surgeons can close the base of the aneurysm with a surgical clip, or use a technique commonly known as coiling, in which surgeons use a catheter to thread metallic coils through a blood vessel in the groin and into the blood vessel in the brain that contains the aneurysm. Surgeons then fill the aneurysm with the detachable coils, which block it from circulation and cause blood to clot, effectively destroying the aneurysm.Aneurysms larger than 10 millimeters are difficult to treat with clipping or coiling. The cPAX device system is indicated for use in those brain aneurysms."Like coiling, the cPAX Aneurysm Treatment System is a form of endovascular repair," said Christy Foreman, director of the Office of Device Evaluation in the FDA's Center for Devices and Radiological Health. "But instead of tiny metallic coils, it uses a special polymer material to fill the space within the aneurysm."According to the FDA, the cPAX device system is indicated for use in adults aged 22 and older and should not be used in patients with an active infection or in those in whom anticoagulation and antiplatelet therapy is contraindicated.

JINAN, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Wednesday and Thursday visited drought-hit villages and ordered all-out efforts to combat the dry spell while celebrating the Chinese New Year with local people. When visiting Jiaxiang County and Qufu City in east China's Shandong Province, Wen inspected cornfields and reservoirs to assess the drought's impact. The drought, which began in October, has hit the southwest parts of Shandong hardest."It's hard to know when it will rain. We must prepare for the worst and do our best to combat the drought to ensure a good harvest," Wen said while visiting a reservoir in Qufu.Wen made the remarks Wednesday afternoon after learning the reservoir was holding a volume of water 8 million cubic meters less than normal. He told officials accompanying him any drought-caused reduction in grain output may undermine the government's top priority for 2011: the stabilization of prices.Officials at all levels must work to combat the drought, Wen added.China's central authorities last week announced an ambitious water conservancy project development plan, to raise China's ability to control flooding and drought.Under the plan, the average annual government spending on such projects will double the 2010 level."The drought affects agricultural output, which is related to the nation's food security and the income of rural people. I worry about it," Wen told a local farmer Wednesday morning. In the evening, Wen joined Liu Xianglun, 77, and his family at their house to make dumplings to eat to welcome the Chinese New Year. Before visiting Shandong, Wen visited farmers and workers in Dabieshan Mountain area, an old revolutionary base in east China's Anhui Province. The Spring Festival, China's Lunar New Year, falls on Thursday.
