SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Relief groups facing the threat of the coronavirus are taking a different approach to sheltering people who have fled West Coast wildfires. An American Red Cross official says many evacuees are being put up in hotel rooms instead of group shelters and getting delivered food instead of lining up at buffets. Large disaster response organizations are still operating some traditional shelters in gyms and churches, where they require masks, clean and disinfect often and try to keep evacuees at least 6 feet (2 meters) apart. At some, organizers are stringing up shower curtains to separate people. 624

SAN DIEGO — Business owners across San Diego County are readying to push back against a potential new round of Coronavirus restrictions. The county could reach the state’s most restrictive purple tier on Tuesday, meaning restaurants, gyms, nail salons and estheticians would all have to stop indoor service.Business owners are now calling this a fight for survival.“We’ve been in the red since March, so the bleeding’s got to stop somewhere,” said Ben Clevenger, who owns Lakeside’s Eastbound Bar and Grill.Clevenger has reduced his staff from 45 to about 15, and he’s now taking shifts running food and cooking in the kitchen. It’s the only way the restaurant can survive amid social distancing restrictions inside, and 100 degree weather outside.“Never do I mind getting my hands dirty, but I would much rather have an employee doing it because it’s money in their pocket,” Clevenger said. The county is on track to move into the state’s most restrictive tier of coronavirus restrictions on Tuesday - largely because of an increase in cases at San Diego State University. On Monday, the county Board of Supervisors will meet behind closed doors to decide whether to take action against the state. Just outside, business owners like Clevenger and Cesar Vallin, a managing partner at Little Italy’s Cloak & Petal, will hold a rally urging the board to act.“Where’s the support from this?” Vallin said. “I just got a property tax bill, I just got a sales tax bill, ,000 that you’re saying I have to pay and if I’m late, it’s a ,000 late fee. But you’re telling me I have to possibly shut down my business again?” 1625

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (KGTV) - The man accused of brutally beating a Salt Lake City teen and his father will not face a hate crime charge, the Salt Lake Tribune reported Monday. Salt Lake City Police said Alan Covington, 50, walked into Lopez Tires the morning of Nov. 27 and said “I’m going to kill someone.” Witnesses also heard Covington say he wanted to “kill a Mexican person”, KTVX reported.Covington waved a square metal pipe at the men inside the business, who escaped onto the front sidewalk, police said. 19-year-old Luis Lopez was struck in the head, according to Lopez’ family. The right side of Lopez' face was shattered and a titanium plate was inserted, his sister reported. Lopez’ father Jose was also injured and suffered a bruised back, family members said. He also needed eight stitches in his arm.Salt Lake City Police told the Salt Lake Tribune it appears Covington was under the influence of drugs during the attack and had some “mental health issues”. He was booked on counts including aggravated assault, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a controlled substance.A GoFundMe account has raised almost three times its goal of ,000. The Lopez' do not have health insurance. 1219

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A former investigator with the Department of Homeland Security was sentenced today to more than a decade in federal prison for taking drug money seized during his work as a federal agent, then laundering the funds that he used for personal expenses.Tyrone Cedric Duren, 50, who pleaded guilty to nearly 20 federal counts last year, was sentenced to 130 months in custody, plus three years of supervised release.U.S. District Judge John Houston also ordered the forfeiture of Duren's Bonsall home, a 5,000 money judgment and restitution to the Internal Revenue Service, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.Duren was assigned to a bulk cash smuggling task force and, as part of his work, would investigate suspected drug traffickers transporting cash. After seizing money during those investigations, he would deliberately fail to report the cash and used the money for his and his families' own personal expenditures, including real estate and international travel, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.Over the course of several years, Duren also placed GPS trackers on vehicles used to move drug proceeds, prosecutors said.Prosecutors cited an example from 2014, in which Duren tracked a vehicle heading toward Mexico, which was stopped at a Border Patrol checkpoint. After Duren seized cash found hidden in laundry detergent boxes in the vehicle, he took more than 0,000 for himself, which was later deposited into business and personal accounts to conceal those thefts,'' the U.S. Attorney's Office said.In addition, prosecutors say he didn't file taxes in 2013 to hide stolen funds and lied ``numerous times'' to investigating agents. 1675

SAN DIEGO (AP and CNS) — A white Christmas was in store for parts of California with wet weather elsewhere in the state that could mean dangerous driving conditions and possible power outages."A storm system is coming and after about 10 p.m. tonight, we'll begin having scattered showers that will continue through the day on Christmas," NWS forecaster Samantha Connolly said of the San Diego impact. "The storm system will bring cooler temperatures through tomorrow, and snow above 5,000 feet."Connolly said temperatures will drop into the high 50s to 60s in most of San Diego on Christmas day. She said temperatures in the mountains are expected to dip into the 30s and 40s during the storm.RELATED: Check Your 10News Pinpoint Weather Forecast"We will have gusty winds as well through the day and night," Connolly said. "Wind gusts will be up to 30 mph along the coasts and in the inland valleys, and as much as 50 to 60 mph in the mountains and deserts."One-tenth to one-quarter of an inch of rain is expected along the coast and in the inland valleys and the deserts on Christmas. Half an inch to an inch of rain is expected in the mountains. The NWS forecaster said the storm will leave San Diego later in the day on Christmas. Wednesday, the day after the storm, is expected to be dry. But more light rain could be on the way."We have another potential storm system that could come in on Thursday and Friday," Connolly said. "We're expecting a little rain from that, but not much."The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory Monday for higher elevations in San Bernardino, Riverside, Los Angeles, Ventura and Kern counties. The weather service said the fast-moving storm system was expected to move into Southern California late Monday, bringing up to 4 inches of snow to elevations above 4,000 feet (1,200 meters) including Big Bear, Wrightwood and the Grapevine area of Interstate 5.The system also was expected to bring gusty winds between 40 and 60 mph (64 to 97 kph) and a chance of rain at lower elevations. The conditions could create snowy and ice-covered roads with low visibility and strong cross winds. The California Department of Transportation said chains will be required in mountain areas. In Northern California, the weather service issued a flash flood watch for an area of Mendocino County that was charred by wildfires earlier this year. The warning was in effect from noon until 6 p.m. Monday. Motorists traveling along Highway 20 should be on alert for possible road flooding, rockslides and debris flows, it said. The fire in July blackened 717 square miles (1,857 square kilometers), much of it in Mendocino National Forest. The weather service also issued a coastal flood advisory in parts of the San Francisco Bay Area until 2 p.m. Monday because of higher than normal tides.Holiday travelers in parts of the Sierra Nevada could see up to 2 feet of snow in some mountain passes at elevations of about 6,000 feet. Forecasters say that by Tuesday, snow could fall at lower mountain elevations. 3042
