TROY, Ala. – A memorial service was held for civil rights icon and U.S. Rep. John Lewis in his hometown in Alabama on Saturday.Lewis died at 80 years old on Friday, July 17, after a battle with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. The Democrat served 17 terms in the House of Representatives, representing Georgia’s 5th congressional district since 1987.The Alabama service celebrating “The Boy from Troy” was held at Troy University’s Trojan Arena, followed by a public viewing.WATCH THE SERVICE BELOW:The service had a limited amount of seating for members of the public, in accordance with social distancing guidelines. Visitors were also asked to wear face coverings. The congressman’s family, friends and the public celebrated his life and legacy of fighting for human rights in the U.S.Troy University says Lewis was born the son of sharecroppers in 1940, grew up on his family’s farm and attended segregated public schools in Pike County. As a young boy, he was inspired by the activism surrounding the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the words of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., which he heard on radio broadcasts, the school says.Lewis’ upbringing in Alabama is said to have shaped his passion for civil rights and led him to become a vanguard of progressive social movements.“John Lewis helped change the history of America,” said Troy University Chancellor Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr. “His focus on justice for all was a rallying cry for the ages. He was a good man with a loving heart, and he will be missed.”On Sunday, Lewis’ casket will be carried over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, where he and other civil rights activists were beaten by law enforcement in 1965. 1670

Tyler Glenn, lead singer of the popular band Neon Trees, is recovering after suffering a stroke last week.In a post to Instagram on Monday, Glenn, 36, said that he woke up Thursday feeling "foggy and not seeing clearly out of my right eye."Glenn wrote that he held off going to the hospital to see if his condition would improve, but visited an ophthalmologist when he woke up the next morning feeling the same way.The doctor found a retinal edema in Glenn's eye and told him he had suffered a stroke. Glenn was admitted to Intermountain Medical Center for cardiology and neurological tests."I’m quite freaked out being 36, ostensibly healthy and having this happen." said Glenn. "I’m still awaiting reasons why, although my labs and the results show a clean bill of health in my heart and blood."Glenn says he still has cloudy vision in his eye, but was told the condition could dissipate.Glenn ended the post with a health recommendation for all his fans."I appreciate the love and support, and hope I can at least get an answer as to why this occurred. If you ever feel or experience something in your body that feels off, please don’t wait to get it checked out. You always assume it can’t happen to you, until it does."Glenn, along with Chris Allen, founded Neon Trees after the duo moved from California to Provo in 2005. 1335

US President Donald Trump congratulated Russian President Vladimir Putin on his re-election despite the warnings from multiple national security advisers and briefing materials that said "DO NOT CONGRATULATE," The Washington Post reported Tuesday evening. The Post, citing an unspecified number of officials familiar with the call, said Trump likewise did not listen to aides who gave him talking points to condemn a nerve agent poisoning in the UK, which the US has blamed on Russia.Trump told reporters on Tuesday as he met with Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman of Saudi Arabia that he had congratulated Putin in a call.White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said both the nerve agent poisoning and alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 election likely did not come up during the call.Trump's comments drew significant criticism among US politicians, including by Arizona GOP Sen. John McCain, a noted Russia hawk, who said "an American president does not lead the free world by congratulating dictators on winning sham elections."The White House National Security Council declined to comment on the report. The White House declined to comment to the Post on Trump's briefing materials, and the story noted that officials said it was not clear if Trump read the notes. 1298

United Airlines is sending layoff warnings to 36,000 employees, nearly half its U.S. staff. It's the clearest signal yet of how deeply the COVID-19 pandemic is hurting the airline industry. United officials said Wednesday that they still hope to limit the number of layoffs by offering early retirement, but they have to send notices this month to comply with a law requiring that workers get 60 days' notice ahead of mass job cuts. The furloughs would include 11,000 flight attendants, 11,000 customer service and gate agents, 5,500 maintenance workers and 2,250 pilots. United officials said the notices cover 45% of its U.S. employees.Air travel in the U.S. dropped about 95% by mid-April. It has recovered slowly but remains down about 75% from a year ago. 768
