ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) — One person is dead and a driver is at large following a hit-and-run collision in Escondido.A vehicle collided with a bicyclist on La Honda Road north of El Norte Parkway at about noon, according to the Escondido Police Department."The rider was wearing a helmet, and we are still investigating the cause as to what happened and how the car and bicyclist crashed," Lt. Scott Walters with the Escondido Police Department said. The cyclist was part of a larger group going southbound on La Honda Drive. Witnesses of the crash saw the 36-year-old victim from Vista fly off his mountain bike and die at the scene. Investigator said the driver of the car never stopped and continued going northbound on La Honda Drive. A short while later, investigators got a break in the case. The mangled car was spotted on the 600-block of Aster Street, just a half-mile away from the crash site. 10News spoke to neighbors watching the commotion, who said they did not recognize the sedan. The victim's identity was not immediately released.Police advised the public to avoid the area for about five hours after the crash. Access to Dixon Lake and Daley Ranch Recreation Areas was closed, but hikers and bikers were able to access Daley Ranch through Cougar Pass in north Escondido, police added. 1312

ESCONDIDO (CNS) - Escondido police today arrested a man after he allegedly jumped on top of a patrol car and began striking it with a rock.Related: Rincon Middle School closed after social media threatAt about 9:45 a.m., a patrol sergeant pulled up to the intersection of Washington Avenue and Quince Street when he witnessed a man run up to his patrol SUV, jump onto the back and begin smacking a rock onto the vehicle's roof, Escondido Police Sgt. Eric Olson said.The man also tore off the vehicle's rear windshield wiper before attempting to flee east on Washington Avenue, Olson said. ESCONDIDO (CNS) - A 47-year-old Escondido man was killed when he lost control of his pickup truck and slammed head-on into a car in Escondido, seriously injuring its driver, authorities said Friday.The crash happened shortly before 2:05 p.m. Thursday near the intersection of Del Dios and Mount Israel roads, California Highway Patrol Officer Kevin Smale said.A 47-year-old man behind the wheel of a 2006 Toyota Tundra pickup was heading eastbound at a high speed on Del Dios Road -- which was slick because of rain -- when he lost control of the pickup at a left-hand curve in the road and the truck began to spin, Smale said.The truck rotated once counterclockwise and crossed over into the opposite lane of traffic, where the front of the truck struck the front of a 2013 Subaru Crosstrek sedan with a 27-year-old woman from Encinitas behind the wheel, the officer said.The Toyota driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, was pronounced dead at the scene, Smale said. The man's name was withheld pending family notification.The Subaru driver was taken to Palomar Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries, which were not believed to be life-threatening, he said.Intoxication was not believed to have been a factor in the crash. 1269

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - The recent birth of a southern white rhino calf marks a major success milestone in the project to save the species' close genetic cousin, the northern white rhino. Only two northern whites are left in the world. Both are females incapable of reproducing.Edward, the calf born in late July, was conveived through in vitro fertilization using frozen sperm samples. "It was so exciting for everyone who worked on this project, the culmination of a very long time and a lot of work," said Dr. Barbara Durrant, a scientist who has worked on the in vitro aspect of the project.Still, Durrant says this milestone still comes during the early stage of the audacious plan. Scientists eventually hope to create northern white embryos with stem cells. Those embryos would then be transferred into female southern white rhinos, who would deliver and raise the calves. The Safari Park brought six females to its facility to act as surrogates, including Victoria, the female who gave birth to Edward.Durrant is excited to move to the next step."We're turning our efforts more toward the lab, toward figuring out how to do the in vitro fertilization and the embryo development.Durrant estimates as long as ten years until the project finally leads to a living northern white rhino calf.Edward is currently being kept in a part of the Safari Park to which the public does not have access. But zookeepers anticipate he'll be ready for public viewing by the end of August. 1489

Facebook has suspended 200 apps for possible misuse of user data in the wake of the Cambridge Analytica scandal.Facebook said in a blog post Monday that it has investigated thousands of apps after it emerged that Cambridge Analytica had harvested information on about 87 million users without their knowledge.It did not name the apps that have been suspended but said they would be subject to a more thorough investigation into how they handle user data.Cambridge Analytica, which worked on President Donald Trump's 2016 election campaign, used data collected via an app developed by University of Cambridge psychology professor Aleksandr Kogan. The app offered a personality test, but Facebook users who downloaded it also gave the professor permission to collect data on their location, their friends and content they had "liked."Kogan provided that data to Cambridge Analytica, in a breach of Facebook's rules. Facebook said it asked Cambridge Analytica to delete the data in 2015, but learned in March that this had not happened.Kogan has said he suspects thousands of other developers and data scientists used similar methods to gather information on Facebook users.In response to a backlash that cost the company billions in lost market value, Facebook said it would investigate every app that had access to large amounts of data prior to 2014, when it tightened its controls.Ime Archibong, Facebook's vice president of product partnerships, said in Monday's post that the company will ban any app found to have misused data.
