(KGTV) - North San Diego County kids and teens had a challenging day on the beach Friday during the junior lifeguard competition in Del Mar.The Del Mar Junior Lifeguards hosted their counterparts from Solana Beach for a day of running, paddle and swim relays, and beach flag games."I definitely feel I grew as a person, I learned to be more selfless. We learned to kind of share respect to others no matter what, and I mean my teamwork just definitely got a lot better,” said 14-year-old James Goodwin, junior lifeguard of the year.Five hundred children ages 9 through 7 participated in the events."We are stressing sportsmanship and teamwork; we're stressing participation, having fun, trying your best. Only one person in each event is going to be first, so everyone needs to learn from what did they do, that they could do better to be the first person next time,” said Del Mar Junior Lifeguards director Turtle Randolph. 953

DEL MAR (CNS) - Hall of Fame Thoroughbred horse trainer Gary Jones died at his Del Mar home at the age of 76, it was announced today.Jones, whose career accomplishments included earning more than million in purses and 1,465 race victories, died Sunday following a lengthy illness. His son Marty, also a trainer, told the Thoroughbred Daily News that his father had been in hospice care and died of natural causes.The son of legendary trainer Farrell ``Wild Horse'' Jones took over his father's stable in 1974 and trained 104 stakes winners over the next 22 years.Jones won 15 race meet titles, including four at Santa Anita in Arcadia, where he set a record with 47 wins in 1976, ranks eighth all-time in Winter/Spring wins with 576 victories, and ninth all-time in stakes won with 72.Notable horses under his training include Turkoman, an Eclipse Award winner named Champion Older Male in 1986, and Best Pal, the winner of the first Pacific Classic at Del Mar in 1991, as well as the Hollywood Gold Cup and Santa Anita Handicap.Thoroughbred Daily News reported that heart problems led to Jones' retirement in 1996.He was elected to the United States Racing Hall of Fame in 2014. Defined by that warm glow and a faint humming sound, the neon sign has been a staple for almost a century.“By the thirties, it sort of exploded,” says Jeff Friedman, with Let There Be Neon. “It’s everywhere.”But a few years ago, neon was moving out of the picture, as cheaper LED lights took over. Las Vegas even has its own museum devoted to the iconic neon of its heyday.It was a dying business, or so it seemed. Friedman says smaller scale, specialty signs are now more popular than ever.  Smaller businesses want to craft a unique sign that stands out and might even be Instagram-worthy.“For us, we’ve never made more neon, and we still can’t make it fast enough, Friedman says.“I think because there's a fresh appreciation of artisanal goods, and people with this instant gratification are appreciating slow process, handmade items, and neon is clearly one of those.”The process can take days to craft just one neon sign.Thomas Rinaldi, a historian who's catalogued some of New York’s most iconic neon signs, says the abundance of new neon is real."People have really kind of seized, maybe more than ever in the last few years, on the kind of unique aesthetic of these exposed tube neon signs,” Rinaldi says. “And it’s become enormously desirable for restaurants, retail environments."However, Rinaldi acknowledges that, in terms of glass blowers still working in neon today, there are fewer of them.
