WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. officials estimate that 20 million Americans have been infected with the coronavirus since it first arrived in the United States, with millions never knowing they had it.Thursday's estimate is roughly 10 times the 2.3 million cases that have been confirmed in the U.S.“Our best estimate right now is that for every case that we’ve reported, there were actually 10 other infections,” said the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Robert Redfield, during a phone briefing with reporters Thursday. Redfield said that estimate comes from analyzing blood samples from across the country for the presence of antibodies to the virus.Twenty million infections means that only about 6% of the nation’s 331 million people have had the virus, leaving the vast majority of the population still susceptible.“This is still serious,” Redfield said. “But I’m asking people to recognize that we’re in a different situation today than we were in March or April,” with more cases today in younger people who are not as likely to develop serious illness or die from infection, he said. The news comes as the Trump administration works to tamp down nationwide concern about the COVID-19 pandemic at a time when about a dozen states are seeing worrisome increases in cases. Also on Thursday, the CDC announced that it was broadening its list of people who are at a higher risk of getting seriously ill from the coronavirus. The CDC has removed the specific age threshold for severe COVID-19 illness. It now warns that among adults, risk increases steadily as you age, and it’s not just those over the age of 65 who are at increased risk. The agency has also updated its list of underlying medical conditions that increase the risk of severe illness from the coronavirus. 1806

WASHINGTON, D.C. – It will be even longer until Americans can travel aboard cruise ships. A group of the nation’s top cruise lines have agreed to suspend their U.S. operations even further.Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) announced Wednesday that its ocean-going cruise line members will suspend their U.S. operations until at least Oct. 31, 2020.The association, made up of companies like Carnival and Norwegian cruise lines, had previously suspended U.S. operations until Sept. 15. The CDC’s no-sail order lasts through Sept. 30.The association said it was a hard decision to further suspend operations, but it must be done to protect the public from the devastating effects of COVID-19.“This is a difficult decision as we recognize the crushing impact that this pandemic has had on our community and every other industry,” said CLIA in a statement. “However, we believe this proactive action further demonstrates the cruise industry’s commitment to public health and willingness to voluntarily suspend operations in the interest of public health and safety, as has occurred twice prior.”CLIA says its cruise line members will continue to monitor the situation with the understanding that they will revisit a possible further extension on or before 30 September 2020.“At the same time, should conditions in the U.S. change and it becomes possible to consider short, modified sailings, we would consider an earlier restart,” wrote CLIA.CLIA says its most recent economic impact study indicated the U.S. supports nearly half a million American jobs and generates billion annually in economic activity throughout the country. According to the association, each day of the suspension of U.S. cruise operations results in a loss of up to 0 million in economic activity and 800 direct and indirect American jobs. The impact of the suspension is particularly profound in states that depend heavily on cruise tourism, including Florida, Texas, Alaska, Washington, New York and California, according to CLIA.The following global cruise lines are part of the association:AIDA CruisesAmerican Cruise LinesAzamaraCarnival Cruise LineCelebrity CruisesCelestyal CruisesCosta CruisesCrystal CruisesCunard LineDisney Cruise LineHolland America LineMSC CruisesMystic CruisesNorwegian Cruise LineOceania CruisesPearl Seas CruisesPONANT Yacht Cruises and ExpeditionsPrincess CruisesRegent Seven Seas CruisesRoyal Caribbean InternationalScenic Luxury Cruises and ToursSeabournSeaDream Yacht ClubSilversea CruisesTUI CruisesVirgin VoyagesWindstar Cruises 2562

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Protesters on both sides of the political spectrum have gathered in the nation’s capital as the U.S. prepares for Election Day results.Specifically, the area surrounding the White House has become a hot spot for demonstrators in support of President Donald Trump, as well as those in favor of former Vice President Joe Biden.A demonstrator shattered a ceramic MAGA hat on the ground right in front of the White House. Most of the people gathered at this part of the fence in the front of the White House are protesting against @realDonaldTrump #ElectionDay #Election2020 pic.twitter.com/4Bi2jIFC90— Tomas Hoppough (@TomasHoppough) November 3, 2020 The view outside the president’s residency is a little different this year, though. “Anti-scale” fencing has been put in place around the White House to prevent people from making their way onto the grounds during this tumultuous time. Some protesters at the site voiced opposition to the fence.“You ever seen something like that before?” asked Alex Loueffler, a Biden supporter. “That and the snipers on the roof, he’s that afraid off the will of the people and the big bad votes.”The White House is far from the only place preparing for potential unrest following the results of the general election. Businesses across the country are preparing just in case we see similar destruction during some of the protests over racial injustice over the summer.Scripps spoke with some D.C. business owners who said they planned to close down early when the polls close. They said that’s when they’re more nervous about what could happen in the district. One D.C. resident said the boarding-up of his community is a bit sad.“I mean that’s where we are, I guess. It’s actually been a little bit emotional for me to see you know seeing that happening,” said D.C. resident Alex Parcan. “I mean I’m from here. I’m not used to seeing on a night that should be, whatever your political persuasion is, a night that should be about us celebrating our democracy. That we’re in this place where we are having to board up buildings and things, like that’s sad.”Meanwhile, other protesters are in support of the fencing and added security, but they wish it wasn’t necessary.“It’s actually very sad and also very sad that when there’s a Republican running for office, the other side makes threats and says it will burn it down, well the Trump supporters in the streets will make them know they’re not welcome,” said James Sullivan, a Trump supporter. “I think it’s a logical response to threats and the president and the Trump administration, the police of D.C., they have to treat every threats seriously.”Law enforcement is also camped out around Washington, just in case any of the protests regarding the election turn violent or need broken up.Regardless of the electoral results, protests are expected to continue for days to come.So far, they’ve been peaceful, and it seems a majority of people out on the streets want to keep it that way.“All I want is a peaceful transition,” said one protester. “I mean it’s been done this way since we’ve had a president. It’s always been peaceful and that’s really all we want.”That protester thinks it’s important to set an example for the world.“We are Americans. The world watches us. We set the example. Let’s show the world how a peaceful transition looks like. Let’s be Americans, united and strong.” 3401

We have to find a way to come together, bridge divisions, and focus on solutions that help the millions who are struggling. I am raising my hand and committing to working with President-elect Biden and my colleagues on both sides of the aisle in Congress to do exactly that. pic.twitter.com/EXWLWKmBdp— Fred Upton #WearYourMask (@RepFredUpton) November 7, 2020 368

We received great news from our rehabilitation facility! The bear that was rescued outside of the #EastCanyonFire is doing very well and has even gained some weight. The bear is almost ready to have its bandages taken off and should be released in the coming weeks. pic.twitter.com/VNl5tDt2Yn— Colorado Parks and Wildlife (@COParksWildlife) July 7, 2020 361
