BOCA RATON, Fla. - Inside Boca Helping Hands, Mel Lazerick mans the pantry desk and hands out apples and bags of produce."I like to do things for other people because I've been fortunate," said Mel, who has devoted most of his life volunteering. At 100-years-old, Mel is the oldest volunteer and donates his time to help feed the hungry three days a week. Executive Director Greg Hazle describes Mel as an inspiration."Just to be active at that age and active helping people is an inspiring way to live," Hazle said.Mel has been handing out groceries at Boca Helping Hands for 20 years with a smile and a sense of humor."I worked it in with my golf and tennis, and I was able to find time," Mel said. "People are very nice to me, and I try to be nice to them."Mel moved from Ohio years ago and settled in South Florida. He recently celebrated his 100th birthday at Helping Hands, and has worked side-by-side with long-time buddy Harold Bader."He's very well-liked. He's very hard-working, even though he's 100," said Bader, who picks Mel up and drives him home. "It made me realize age has nothing to do with your abilities to do things, and he proves that every day.Mel has been volunteering for decades. He joined Big Brothers and Big Sisters more than 70 years ago, and he still keeps in contact with his two younger brothers."One is 65-years-old and one is 92," Mel said. Now, Mel will be honored for his service on October 20, when Boca Helping Hands will celebrate its volunteers. BOISE, Idaho (AP) -- A U.S. judge says the IRS can't keep withholding coronavirus relief payments from incarcerated people, potentially clearing the way for at least 80,000 checks totaling more than 0 million to be sent to people behind bars in the United States. The ruling gives the IRS until Oct. 24 to reconsider the payments for those who were denied or had their money intercepted solely because of their incarceration. But for incarcerated people who didn't file a tax return in 2018 or 2019, another deadline is looming -- they have until Oct. 15 to apply for the checks. The IRS and Treasury Department have not yet decided whether to pursue an appeal. 669
Bill Lee, a businessman from Franklin, has won the Republican primary for Tennessee Governor.Lee defeated three other GOP front-runners in a crowded primary field for the nomination, including Rep. Diane Black. Black had the endorsement of Vice President Mike Pence and was widely seen as President Trump's first choice for the nominee.Lee will face former Nashville Mayor Karl Dean in the general election in November. The two will vie to succeed popular Republican Governor Bill Haslam, who’s hitting term limits.Lee is a cattle farmer and chairman of a mechanical contracting, facilities, and home services company. The Republicans' focus on conservative credentials and loyalty to President Donald Trump, including tough talk on immigration, incited in-fighting among some of the candidates about who's not as conservative as they claimed during their campaigns. Each of the four Republican candidates added millions of dollars in personal wealth to their campaigns, amounting to a record-setting total of about million.Karl Dean was elected Nashville Mayor in 2007 then re-elected in 2011.He took a commanding lead early in the night with nearly 80 percent of the vote and saw an even bigger share in Davidson County where he approached 90 percent of the vote.He was one of two well-known names on the Democratic ticket for Governor. Craig Fitzhugh, House Minority leader, was first elected into the state House of Representatives in 1994 and he's has served in the legislature ever since. The third name on the ballot Mezianne Vale Payne. 1612
BERLIN — A spacecraft bound for Mercury has swung by Venus, using Earth’s neighbor to adjust its course on the way to the solar system’s smallest and innermost planet. Launched almost two years ago, the European-Japanese probe BepiColombo took a black-and-white snapshot of Venus from a distance of 10,560 miles. The fly-by is the second of nine so-called planetary gravity assists that the spacecraft needs for its seven-year trip to Mercury. BepiColombo will make one more fly-by of Venus and six of Mercury itself to slow down before its arrival in 2025. Researchers hope the BepiColombo mission will help them understand more about Mercury, which is only slightly larger than Earth’s moon and has a massive iron core. 729
