SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Frank Zamarron, 26, credits his Apple Watch for saving his life.“No warning signs, no pain no nothing,” Zamarron.  “All to know is that my Apple Watch started going off.”It was a Monday night in March, and his watch was alerting him something was wrong.“My heart-rate is elevated, and I'm just sitting at home watching TV relaxing from a long day at work,” he said. “After the fourth alert, I was like okay, something is not right. Time for me to a go to the hospital.”It was a decision that saved his life. It turns out, Zamarron contracted cellulitis, a skin infection, on his right leg. Soon after doctors started treating him, his leg began to blister.“Apparently your body is reacting to the infection trying to fight it off, doing everything it can, raising your heart rate,” Zamarron said. “They said it could have been fatal in a certain situation. Depending on how I treated it. Typically you would take pain pills or something and call it a day.”Zamarron spent seven days in the hospital.Doctors told him his weight might have contributed to the infection. Zamarron is now focused on staying active and getting healthier. 1223

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Distance learning is now possible for more than 7,000 San Diego County families who had little or no internet access before the pandemic. The County Office of Education has been working for months to get those students online and have plans to help even more.Before COVID-19 hit, the county estimates one in five families had no internet or were considered “under-connected” by not having a connection strong enough to support distance learning.Isabel Estrada was one of those students.“Sometimes it would cut out during class time and I would miss something or have to email my teachers of why it kept cutting out,” said the freshman at Oceanside High School.The County Office of Education has been working for months to bridge the digital gap. So far, they’ve provided more than 7,000 mobile hotspots to families in need.Once Isabel’s family got a hot spot she says she felt more confident signing on to class.“We’re just really grateful because the internet right now, it’s me and my sister so it helps both of us with school,” said Isabel.At a press conference Thursday, Supervisor Nathan Fletcher announced million from the general fund will be used to help connect another 4,000 families.“That digital divide went from something that we needed to address, to something we had to address when our promise of public education moved virtually,” said Fletcher.The million will be divided among 19 districts identified as having the greatest need. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - For the first time in decades, the Port of San Diego is putting forth a comprehensive update to its master plan. A port spokesperson says the effort began in 2013 and has been a very thoughtful and open process. However, some residents in the county are just learning about the plan. In April, the Port published a more than 300-page draft of the master plan. "Ninety percent of the people that we speak to had no idea that this plan had been put forth. We have been out at the local grocery stores, going door-to-door, we've been posting here on the path because these are the places where we're going to reach the people who use this area the most," said Cameron Lilley, a lifelong Point Loma resident. Lilley has significant concerns with Shelter Island proposals, including:Up to 1600 new hotel rooms70,000 square feet of retail and restaurant spaceRemoving private and historic docks"Parking is a huge issue already, bringing more tourism to this area will negatively impact the residents who live and use it," said Lilley.On Tuesday she was joined by family and friends at La Playa Trail, encouraging people to give feedback to the Port by the July 31 deadline. They've created a group, Save Point Loma, to try and educate the community. "We're all out here united in this cause," said Lilley.The Port says it has been very transparent throughout the entire process, not only making the draft available to the public but holding community meetings. A spokesperson tells 10News they've used social media, the radio, and community paper ads to try and get people involved. And the Port says it wants to hear from the community moving forward. After receiving initial feedback, they will continue to hold community meetings and will later put forth a revised draft. The comment period for the Master Plan draft goes through July 31. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Harbor Police are investigating after a boat caught fire early Sunday morning in the San Diego Bay.The department tweeted around 5 a.m. about the fire at Marina Cortez.According to police, a good Samaritan helped put out the fire before units arrived on scene. The person was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.At this time, the cause of the fire is unknown. 393

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Fans and players on Petco Park's field fled as hundreds of bees swarmed near the Padres' dugout Sunday afternoon.At about 4:06 p.m., in the bottom of the 3rd inning, Fox Sports reported a queen bee landed on their microphone and hundreds of bees followed suit."It made my skin crawl," Padres Fan Kel Loftis said."Out of the blue all of the sudden you saw everybody running off the field," Padres Fan Bob Pollack said.As fans saw the area clear out, some were concerned for their family's safety, "it was kinda crazy like what's going on?" Loftis said. As a military man, he was concerned something more serious was happening.Then everyone in the stadium saw the television screens with a close up on the swarm. "Between [Austin] Hedges, [Josh] Naylor and [Glenn] Hoffman, you know the third base coach, I was wondering who was more panicked," Loftis said chuckling.Padres Catcher Austin Hedges was seen wearing a Deadpool mask, sweatshirt and holding two bats, seemingly ready to battle the bees. A man from Cartwright Pest Control came out to save the day. Fans dubbed him "Bee Man." The delay in total was less than 30 minutes.The Padres confirmed the company is out at the park for every game in case of an event like this.A group of Girl Scouts in the crowd were concerned about the safety of the bees. This isn't the first time Petco's had bees, a swarm showed up in July of 2009 and delayed the game by almost an hour.While fans thought the bee delay Sunday was strange, they took it in stride.Some parents used it as a teachable moment. "Well she had a lot of questions so the first thing she said was why are the bees out there?" Loftis said.The Padres confirmed they are equipped with EpiPens, as well as Benadryl in the event of an allergic reaction. There were no reports of anyone being stung. 1832
