SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Authorities are investigating after an inmate died at the George Bailey Detention Facility. According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, deputies were notified that an inmate identified as 63-year-old Dennis Lee Curry needed medical help inside his cell on May 11. Deputies say when they arrived, Curry complained of pain to his head and chest, but had no visible injuries. Curry was taken to a local hospital where his condition worsened and he was placed on life support before he died on the morning of May 13. Following an autopsy, it was discovered that Curry died of natural causes. The Sheriff’s Department’s homicide unit was called in to investigate, as they do with all in-custody deaths. Curry was in custody for outstanding warrants related to prior DUI and drug-related charges, according to the department. 860

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Boomers! has announced it will close its Kearny Mesa and El Cajon locations, after being shuttered in March due to the coronavirus.The local family entertainment centers announced online that they would close, though season passes, play cards, and "Boomers Bucks" will be honored at Apex Parks Group's eight other properties, including Irvine, Modesto, Santa Maria, Livermore, Calif.10News reached out to Boomers! SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Basic needs can be challenging to meet for homeless families or those living in shelters. As schools resume for students, distance learning can be even harder. Father Joes Villages is helping homeless students thrive this school year."We work with a population that is customarily at a disadvantage and has greater challenges, especially during these times of the pandemic," says Deacon Jim Vargas.It's been a challenge for the kids who aren't able to go to school. "In a sense, distance learning has isolated them even more," says Jennifer Ryan with the Therapeutic Children's Center at Father Joe's Villages."They don't have the financial resources, technological resources, other resources like those families that have homes," adds Vargas.The Therapeutic Children's Center provides a space for students to do their work."We have about 100 children that are in school. That's kindergarten all the way to 17-year-olds," says Ryan.Laptops and tablets are usually given to students by their schools. Father Joe's Villages makes sure they have access to the internet, school supplies, and more.Deacon Vargas says without the right intervention, these students are likely to repeat a grade or worse. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — California has rejected San Diego County's request for a tier adjustment after the region was moved into the state's purple reopening tier.The county said that "San Diego’s increased cases are not due to the sectors impacted by moving into a more restrictive tier. County has interviewed cases to identify potential exposure settings and tracked community outbreaks."County health officials say businesses that will be impacted by purple tier restrictions saw the following breakdown of COVID-19 cases in October:Restaurant/bars: 7.4% of COVID-19 cases (715 of 9,646)Retail: 6.6% of COVID-19 cases (636 of 9,646)Places of worship: 1.9% of COVID-19 cases (184 of 9,646)K-12 schools: 1.7% of COVID-19 cases (165 of 9,646)Gyms: 0.4% of COVID-19 cases (39 of 9,646)In reference to October's data, the county said that, "outbreak data also show these sectors make up a small percentage of the cases overall ...
