Rescuers are searching for crew members aboard two US Marine planes that collided mid-air off the coast of Japan in the early hours of Thursday morning, according to Japan's Ministry of Defense and the US Marine Corps.At least one Marine was killed in the crash and the body has been recovered, the Marine Corps said in a statement. A second Marine was rescued and is described to be in fair condition. Five other Marines remain missing.The KC-130 and F/A-18 collided at 1:42 a.m. local time, according to a Japanese Defense Ministry statement.According to a statement from the US Marine Corps, the crash happened during an aerial refueling that was part of a routine training. The primary mission of a KC-130 is airborne refueling.It is believed five crew were on board the KC-130 and two on the F/A-18 at the time of the crash, two US defense officials told CNN.First Lt. Josh Hayes, a public affairs officer with the 3rd Marines Expeditionary Forces based out of Okinawa, told CNN the rescued Marine was in "fair condition."The killed Marine was found by a Japanese military ship at 12:13 p.m. local time and was being transferred to a mainland medical facility, according to Japanese defense spokesperson Norio Harada.Japan has dispatched 10 aircraft and three ships from its Self Defense Force and Coast Guard to help with the search for five people still believed to be missing.The US 7th Fleet said in a statement that it was supporting ongoing search and rescue efforts with a Navy P-8A Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance Aircraft flying out of Kadena Air Force Base.Rescue teams are battling bad weather which has passed through the area in the last 24 hours or so, bringing showers, storms and sustained winds of 30 to 40 mph."The weather is definitely going to play a factor," said Hayes. "It's a full team effort between us and the Japanese defense force. And we're hoping to get our Marines back."The crash happened approximately 200 miles (321 kilometers) off the coast of Iwakuni, Japan, a US Marine Corps official told CNN.The planes "had launched from Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni and were conducting regularly scheduled training when the mishap occurred," according to a statement from the US Marine Corps.Wednesday's incident comes on the same day that the Marines released a report on a crash in July 2017, also involving a KC-130 variant that killed 15 Marines and one sailor.That KC-130T crash took place in Leflore County, Mississippi, and the "investigation determined that the aircraft's propeller did not receive proper depot-level maintenance during its last overhaul ... in September 2011, which missed corrosion that may have contributed to the propeller blade" coming loose during the flight and going into the aircraft's fuselage, according to a Marine Corps statement on the investigation.The-CNN-Wire 2845

Public transit across the country has seen a roller coaster of ridership since the pandemic first hit. Now, it looks to the future and the hope that riders return."A lot of medical workers ride transit every day, people who work in distribution centers, grocery stores, these are people who keep cities running, and we really need transit to carry these workers through the depths of this pandemic," said Ben Fried of Transit Center, a non-profit that advocates for better public transportation in American cities.Fried says public transit nationwide has seen fewer riders than normal ever since stay-at-home orders were first enacted."We have seen transit climb back a little bit in terms of ridership. At the peak, it was down 90-95%. Now, depending on the system, it's typically down about 75% of normal rates," Fried said."(We've seen) a significant decrease. We normally carry 400,000 riders a day. We saw that drop to 100,000 early on," said Terry White, the Interim General Manager of King County Metro in Seattle.White said King County had to cut unused bus routes and then add service to the southern region of the county, which still saw a high number of passengers during the height of the pandemic."(We) almost didn't miss a beat in terms of the ridership coming out of that area," White said. "So, we assume there are a lot of folks in those areas that have to get to these essential services, food, healthcare, frontline jobs you can't do from home."While public transportation departments across the country reorganize their transit routes and implement new safety, cleaning and social distancing efforts on buses and subway cars, they're concerned about how the future of public transit will look. Fried hopes more people realize public transportation is still safe during the pandemic.Fried pointed to New York City as an example."Transit ridership has really increased a lot since the depths of the pandemic," Fried said. "We're not back to normal by any means, but as transit ridership has increased, we have not seen a spike in COVID cases. So, that's one indication transit may be safer than people think it is."Still, the overall decline in ridership isn't good for public transportation agencies' bottom lines."Transit agencies depend on revenue from a variety of sources," Fried said. "It's a mix of fare revenue, dedicated taxes, so like a local sales tax, a percentage of which will go to transit, and state and local government support and all three of these are getting hammered various degrees from COVID."In Seattle, King County Metro depends on local sales tax and money made from bus and subway fares to keep them going."Really, our outlook for the next 10 years in this COVID pandemic situation has us in a situation where we will have to make up probably about billion over the next ten-year period," White said.Recently, King County Metro laid off 200 part-time employees while also offering early retirement incentives to some full-time workers, despite receiving a good chunk of money from the CARES Act. Fried is advocating for more federal help to keep public transit moving.As the pandemic moves forward, Fried hopes passengers start to get comfortable with using public transportation again."I think the number one thing to realize is that our collective health and safety is dependent on people wearing masks," he said. "It's true in shared space, and it's true in transit."Fried hopes ridership in the U.S. can get back to normal levels soon, but King County Metro doesn't think that will happen anytime soon. 3563

  

President Donald Trump tried to end the special counsel probe in December, marking the second known attempt to do so, The New York Times reported Tuesday.The Times report on Tuesday evening came as CNN reported that Trump is considering firing Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who has oversight of the Mueller probe, following a federal raid on Trump's personal attorney Michael Cohen.In December, angered by reports of subpoenas for information on his business with Deutsche Bank, Trump told advisers he wanted the investigation to be shut down, according to the Times' report.The Times report, based on interviews with eight sources, said the President backed down after Mueller's office told Trump's lawyers and advisers that reports about the subpoenas were inaccurate.The report outlines the second time Trump is known to have moved to quash the probe, and follows previous reporting?that the President moved to fire Mueller last June, which a source said White House counsel Donald McGahn refused. Trump denied the story at the time.Under special counsel regulations, Mueller's office would have to discuss with the attorney general whether to keep an investigation under the special counsel's office or to refer it to a different jurisdiction. Because Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from oversight of the investigation, Rosenstein would then presumably decide which investigative team moves forward.Trump has regularly lashed out at Mueller's investigation as a "witch hunt," and following news of the raid Monday, he offered a mixed response when asked about firing the special counsel."Why don't I just fire Mueller?" the President said.
