MONROE, Ohio -- Authorities in Ohio have charged a 17-year-old driver whose classmate was killed when she crashed on the way to prom last month.The teen — Scripps station WCPO in Cincinnati is not naming her because she is a minor — is facing two counts of vehicular assault and one count of aggravated vehicular homicide, the Butler County Sheriff's Office announced Thursday.Prosecutor Michael Gmoser said he plans to keep the case in juvenile court.The Monroe High School student was driving three classmates to prom on April 27 when she crashed. Police previously said the driver was speeding on her way to prom when she attempted a course-correction and lost control of the 2013 Tesla on Millikin Road in Liberty Township and hit a telephone pole.?Kaylie Jackson, 17, was riding in the back seat and was not wearing a seatbelt, deputies said. She was ejected from the car through the windshield and flown to University of Cincinnati Medical Center for treatment. She died from her injuries three days later. Two other passengers were treated at an area hospital and released. The teen driver's father previously told WCPO she entered counseling at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center after the crash. The teen driver is scheduled to appear in juvenile court May 24.  1354

MILWAUKEE -- Seven people were shot at the Serenity Funeral Home in Milwaukee Wednesday afternoon, police say. Acting Police Chief Michael Brunson said all seven victims are in stable condition and are expected to survive. The victims are a 48-year-old woman, a 26-year-old woman, a 24-year-old woman, a 29-year-old man, a 26-year-old man, a 24-year-old man and a 20-year-old man.There's no word yet on what caused the shooting, and the exact circumstances that led up to it are still under investigation. Brunson said his officers continue to search for an unknown suspect."Our prayers are with the victims and their family members during this terrible time," Brunson said."This is an untenable situation. NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (KGTV) -- Families in one South Bay city got one step closer to relief from skyrocketing rent Thursday as a group turned in signatures supporting a measure that could make its way to the November ballot. The National City Families for Fair Rent coalition has collected 3,500 signatures from registered voters in favor of implementing a program to stabilize rent.The initiative is called the National City Rent Control and Community Stabilization Ordinance.In order to get the measure on the November ballot, the coalition needs the signatures of 2,300 registered National City voters.Researchers say the measure is important because National City is one of the last safe havens for families struggling to pay rent. "It is one of the last places, sort of the last refuge for families struggling to get by have been able to afford to rent," said Dr. Peter Brownell,Research Director at Center on Policy Initiatives.The city council can now take one of three actions. Enact it without sending it to the ballot, send it to the ballot or request a report from city staff.If a report is requested, the council will have to reconvene and take one of the first two options within 30 days. 1220

  

MINERAL WELLS, Texas – A young bull rider has died after being bucked off a bull during a competition in Texas.Rowdy Lee Swanson of Duncan, Oklahoma, passed away Thursday due to injuries sustained while competing at the Palo Pinto County Livestock Association’s PRCA Rodeo in Mineral Wells, according to the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association.“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Rowdy Swanson at the ProRodeo in Mineral Wells, Texas,” PRCA CEO George Taylor said. “The hearts of the entire rodeo community go out to Rowdy’s family in this tragic time. We will continue to keep Rowdy and his family in our thoughts and prayers.”The 20-year-old was a student at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater and was studying animal sciences.Swanson was part of the university’s rodeo team. His coach, Cody Hollingsworth, expressed his condolences on Twitter."With a heavy and aching heart, I am saddened to announce that the OSU Rodeo Team has lost one of our own, Rowdy Swanson. He was a big part of our rodeo family and he will be missed immensely.
