BEIJING, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- CNC World, the English-language channel of Xinhua News Agency's TV arm, CNC, will reach cable television audiences in Africa from Jan. 1, 2011, according to an agreement signed Friday between CNC and South Africa-based MIH Group.The English-language channel of China Xinhua News Network Corporation (CNC) will be available to 4 million African families through MIH's cable network.Xinhua President Li Congjun met Koos Bekker, founder of MIH, before the signing of the agreement. Both sides expressed their hope CNC will be a competitive and influential international media organization.On Thursday, Xinhua signed an agreement with Eutelsat Communications to extend the coverage of CNC to all of Europe, the Middle East and North Africa from Jan. 1, 2011, through Eutelsat Communications' Eurobird, Hotbird and W7 satellites.CNC World broadcasts English news programs 24 hours a day and covers breaking news and major political, economic and cultural news from around the world.Launched in 2009, CNC has developed into a television network with satellite services in the Asia-Pacific, North America, Europe and Africa.It is also expanding its cable television and new media services and provides news programs to about 300 domestic and overseas television organizations.

TOKYO, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao arrived in Japan Friday for the 18th Economic Leaders' Meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), which is slated for Saturday and Sunday in Yokohama.Hu and his wife, Liu Yongqing, were welcomed by senior officials from the Japanese Foreign Ministry at Haneda airport.Chief Executive Donald Tsang of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and Chinese Ambassador to Japan Cheng Yonghua were also present at the airport to greet Hu.President Hu, who flew into Tokyo from Seoul after attending the fifth summit of the Group of 20 (G20), was traveling by car to Yokohama.With the theme of "Change and Action," this year's Economic Leaders' Meeting will focus on the regional economic integration, a growth strategy for the Asia-Pacific region, human security, the economic and technical cooperation, and the assessment of achievement of Bogor Goals by APEC economies, according to the meeting agenda.The Bogor Goals call for free and open trade and investment in the Asia-Pacific by 2010 for industrialized economies and by 2020 for developing economies. BEIJING, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- China is trying to have more workers and farmers and fewer university graduates working as public servants because university graduates may have achieved academically, but farmers and workers often have grass-roots life experience.But achieving the goal has not been easy -- for the government, and workers and farmers as well.The annual National Public Servant Exam on Dec. 5 attracted more than 1 million candidates for 16,000 vacancies around the country, according to Nie Shengkui, a senior State Administration of Civil Service official.For the first time, it was stipulated that workers and farmers were preferred for some of the positions, in a move to make the exam more inclusive.As part of the pilot project, a total of 14 positions in grass-roots branches of central government departments at the county-level or below - including customs, taxation and rail police - in the regions of Guangdong, Sichuan, Xinjiang and Gansu were reserved for workers and farmers.Including more grass-roots workers and farmers in the exam is an improvement in the civil servant selection process, said Zhao Shuming, a professor of human resource management at Nanjing University in east China's Jiangsu Province.Compared with university graduates, workers and farmers are suited to some public service positions that involve work with grass-roots people, Zhao said.However, according to Nie, only 62 workers and farmers of the 171 qualified applicants took the exam."The competition in the public service exam is fierce, and I believe many workers and farmers lacked the confidence to take the exam," said Li Zhen, an official in Sichuan's provincial Department of Human Resources and Social Security.Li said that to his knowledge, there were no workers and farmers that took the exam in the province."Become a civil servant? BEIJING, Dec. 18 (Xinhua) -- China's official Xinhua News Agency on Saturday formally launched its financial information exchange, an information sharing platform in the financial and cultural sectors to promote development of the nation's capital market.Approved by the People's Bank of China, or the central bank, it is the world's first financial information exchange.It is funded by and registered with the China Finance Corporation (CFC), owned by Xinhua.Located in the Lize business district in the southwest of downtown Beijing, the exchange has the world's largest LCD panel groups at 7,593 inches, which show real-time information in the finance and cultural industries.Member users can also get the latest information on technology transfers and business consultations.The exchange would improve Xinhua's presence and influence in the global financial information sector and enhance China's soft power in the international capital markets, said Xinhua president Li Congjun at the inauguration ceremony."It aims to be a fair, just, professional and highly efficient intermediary service platform in the financial information and cultural sectors to promote information sharing among the cultural sector, industries and the capital markets," he said."The ultimate goal is to become the world's most influential financial information and cultural industry service center."
