SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Three Scripps Health locations will temporarily close this week to give the system more staffing flexibility amid the coronavirus pandemic.Scripps Clinic Coronado, Scripps Clinic Santee, and Scripps Clinic Bariatric and General Surgery in Hillcrest will close in order to give the medical system "the ability to move people and resources to where they are needed more.”Scripps will redirect patients from those sites to other locations.RELATED: Sharp temporarily closing multiple locations amid coronavirus outbreak“The coronavirus pandemic has triggered many changes in our lives and forced organizations of all types to alter the way they provide services to their customers,” said Chris Van Gorder, Scripps president and CEO. “These latest changes at Scripps give us more flexibility in how we staff all of our clinics and hospitals as this health pandemic continues to unfold, and they give us the ability to move people and resources to where they are needed more.”The health system said patients can also use Scripps' telemedicine video service instead of scheduling an in-person consultation.RELATED: Nurse urges people to turn over N95 masks to San Diego hospitalsOther Scripps outpatient sites were also being reviewed for possible changes in operation. Scripps patients should contact their hospital location to see whether or not appointments are impacted. The changes come as Scripps move to expand site accepting medical supply donations to address reported supply shortages. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The U.S. Coast Guard reports sightings of a whale in San Diego Bay.Several pictures were posted online by San Diego Floating Lab, which is located off Shelter Island in America's Cup Harbor.Captain Rick Scott of Ocean Odyssey took the photos. An employee at the business said it's common for juvenile whales to enter the bay, but they tend to find their way back out.The Coast Guard has not determined what type of whale is in the bay.Watch a Facebook live of the whale in the player below: Have you seen the whale? SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Thirteen people overcoming a unique set of obstacles plan to conquer a 13.1-mile marathon this weekend.They're called the Lucky 13."It takes a lot of courage, and you've got to be really brave, even just to apply," said Paul Carey, the Lucky 13 Coordinator, and Head Coach.The Tri-City Medical Center program assists those who have had or are currently overcoming health obstacles to achieve their fitness goals. For six months, they're professionally trained and receive wellness support ahead of the Tri-City Medical Center Carlsbad Half-Marathon."Everything good I have in my life can be traced back to Lucky 13 and being part of that," said Carey, who was a participant years ago.For 30 years Carey felt trapped in his bipolar diagnosis.During that time, he was on heavy medications, had several psychiatric hospital stays, and underwent 50 sessions of electroconvulsive therapy.Then he found the Lucky 13 program."It's an endless foundation of support that's just something really remarkable," said Carey. If you'd like to be a part of the next Lucky 13, Tri-City will accept applications from February through the end of June. The program is free and anyone can apply. 1201
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – The owners of a Webster-area restaurant that has been broken into in recent days decided to set up their own overnight sting operation, and their plan led to two arrests.At around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, the owners of Trevi Ristorante on 4703 Federal Blvd., put together their own stakeout and waited for anyone who would try to break into the business.The restaurant had been burglarized three times in the past week, including one incident in which a safe was taken. Jonathan Romero, the owners’s son, told ABC 10News, “We’re tired of it.”While the owner remained on the roof, his son waited across the street and a family friend watched from behind the eatery.After several hours, they noticed an SUV park in an alley behind the restaurant and two men get out of the vehicle.As the family observed the two people go through gates to the restaurant’s back doors, the owner’s son called 911.San Diego police officers arrived at the scene and took one of the would-be burglars into custody.However, the other man climbed up the side of the building and ran across the roof. After jumping from the roof down to the front parking lot, the man ran away as officers pursued him.The man was able to cross Federal Boulevard, but officers deployed a stun gun and subdued him.The stunned man was treated at the scene for his injuries and is expected to be OK. 1373
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - There's a stretch of Linda Rosa Avenue in Bird Rock that winds up a hillside and leads to homes with sweeping views of San Diego's coastline.The homes that enjoy that view, however, vary quite a bit. Some are older, smaller, and were built in the 1960s.Others are modern, and tower above the rest. Some refer to those larger homes as "McMansions," and wonder how they keep getting approved without any pushback from neighbors to protect community character."They basically skirt the reviews," said Dave Ish, who lives in an older home on Linda Rosa.READ?JON HORN'S ORIGINAL LOOK AT 'MCMANSIONS'Developers are able to skip the lengthy and public Coastal Development Permit process as long as they retain at least 50 percent of a structure's exterior walls. It's spelled out in city code. That's why McMansions are popping up in San Diego's coastal neighborhoods. But it turns out the city's 50-percent exemption creates even more flexibility for developers because they can get permit after permit with no waiting period in between.RELATED: Coronado neighbors worried about historic mansion turned transitional homeDeveloper Ben Ryan, of Tourmaline Properties, did that for an ocean-view home on Linda Rosa.In October, the city issued him a permit to add a closet and convert a garage to a carport, under the 50-percent exemption. "Obviously it was just a temporary deal," Ish said. "Nothing was finished, it was this bowed out paneling, these windows weren't finished. It may have been a quick job, but it changed the layout of the home enough to allow Ryan to alter the design for a larger project.Ryan got a new permit later in February - again under the 50-percent exemption - calling for a second story, master suite, decks, kitchen, living room, dining room, and more. Today, the home is just half a wood frame - the closet and carport nowhere in site.
