SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An Ohio man accused of pepper-spraying 11 San Diego Police officers during a demonstration last month has pleaded not guilty.Denzel Draughn, 28, pleaded not guilty on Wednesday to felony counts of unlawful use of tear gas against a peace officer and 11 felony counts of use of force against a peace officer.On Aug. 28, a group of demonstrators protesting the shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisc., marched through downtown San Diego.See Sky10 video of the demonstration below:Police say that as the group neared 9th and E Streets, a vehicle that was following the group failed to stop at red lights. After police stopped the driver, a crowd began to form near the car and officers who pulled the vehicle over.SDPD says that the group ignored demands to back up from the scene, prompting one officer to pull out pepper spray. Police say one person tried to knock the pepper spray out of the officer's hand, forcing the officer to discharge the spray.Several police officers then tried to arrest the person. As the officers were placing the person in custody, a pepper spray canister fell on the ground. Officers say Draughn picked up the canister and sprayed it twice, hitting 11 officers.SDPD says Draughn fled but was later found and arrested.If convicted, Draughn faces probation to 11 years in jail. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An autopsy report released on Trevor Heitmann, the teenager known as "McSkillet" on YouTube, is revealing details about what happened before he crashed his vehicle on Interstate 805.The report says Heitmann’s parents called the police to request a psychiatric evaluation stating, “On August 23, the decedent's parents contacted the local police department to request a psychiatric evaluation but were informed that the evaluation could not be performed as the decedent had not broken any laws."The statement means hours before Trevor Heitmann drove his car down the freeway killing two people, police were at his house.RELATED: Autopsy details mental state of McSkillet before deadly I-805 crash"Even though police are trained to identify mental health issues and mental illness issues they just can't take someone off the streets unless there is such conduct to warrant it,” said attorney Kenneth Rosenfeld.Rosenfeld, who has no connection to this case, explained law enforcement does have the ability to detain someone using the 51-50 law. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A would-be purse snatcher was caught by San Diego Police in Normal Heights Tuesday thanks to witnesses.Stephanie Moore says she was inside the Vons on Adams Avenue and 36th Street when a man grabbed her purse.As soon as it happened, Moore says she started chasing after the suspect. “I am a tough girl and the first thing I do is act instead of react.”Rocco Estello and two other good Samaritans tell 10News they saw the incident happen when they also ran after the suspect, calling police in the process."We caught up to him, but he took off this way and SDPD caught up to him, which is a really, really good blessing because it makes me feel better to be on these streets,” said Estello.The man was arrested and the purse returned. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A small stretch of Old Town's main road will be closed to cars from Thursdays through Sundays for the rest of 2020 to help area restaurants serve outdoors safely.The move is meant to help the region survive as it enters the purple tier of coronavirus restrictions, which outlaws indoor dining.San Diego Avenue, from Arista to Linwood, will no longer be available to vehicle traffic in the afternoons and evenings on Thursdays through Sundays until Dec. 27. While most of Old Town has been able to offer outdoor dining with adequate social distancing, the restaurants on the southernmost portion of the historic park have not had as much space to work with.Pietro Busalacchi, who opened Trattoria Don Pietro in August, said cars sometimes speed down the street, near outdoor diners. Additionally, the sidewalk near the tables is narrow and large groups without masks walk too close to diners. It turns him from restaurateur to security officer. "Once they've walked halfway through the restaurant if they're not wearing a mask I'm like, 'hey you know, can you throw a mask on?' It's too late at that point and also some people look at you like, 'don't tell me what to do,'" Busalacchi said. The Old Town Chamber of Commerce arranged with the city for the closure, which it experimented with earlier this year. After two months back to normal, it decided the closure was the right way to go. "The pandemic really changed a lot for our businesses, so we had to give each request a shot and we decided to close the street again," said Sunny Lee, the chamber's executive director.Lee said if the coronavirus restrictions persist into 2021, Old Town would seek to extend its closure with the city.
