BEIJING, Aug. 4 (Xinhuanet) -- Rising domestic iron ore production and slowing steel demand have hit some foreign miners and affected the global market, industry leaders said on Tuesday.China's iron ore imports dropped for the third straight month to 47.2 million tons in June, while spot prices have dropped to about 2 per ton after peaking at 5 per ton in April.The country's iron ore imports rose 4 percent year-on-year in the first half of this year, figures from the China Iron & Steel Association (CISA) showed. But domestic ore output increased by 28 percent year-on-year to 485 million tons in the same period, with output rising 37.6 percent in the second quarter from the first quarter."Rising domestic ore production is the main factor that drove down imports, largely impacting supply and demand on the global market," CISA vice-chairman Luo Bingsheng said.The figures form part of the bad news for international mining companies in Australia and Brazil that provide more than half of the ores to China.Iron ore imports from Australia, Brazil and India accounted for 62.3 percent of the country's total ore consumption last year.Brazilian company Vale already predicted in June that the share of imported ores in China would drop this year.About 40 percent of Chinese steel mills have to make cutbacks or put plants on maintenance, blaming increasing costs of imported ores and declining steel prices. Oversupply in the industry will continue to lower production, further driving down ore imports in the third quarter, Luo said.The CISA will also reduce the number of licensed iron ore importers to regulate the imported ore market."We will announce new rules for the industry soon, which include higher standards on the environment, energy consumption and capital requirement," Luo said.

NGARI/CHENGDU, July 2 (Xinhua) -- Southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region, known as the "Roof of the World", on Thursday opened its fourth civil airport in farwest Ngari area, shortening a trip to the regional capital Lhasa to one and half hours from three or four days by car.An Airbus 319 landed at Gunsa Airport in Ngari Prefecture at 10:20 a.m., marking the airport's official opening.The passenger flight from Chengdu, capital of the neighboring Sichuan Province, was operated by Air China's southwestern branch.An Air China flight would fly from Chengdu to Lhasa and on to Ngari every Tuesday and Friday, said Bao Lida, a spokesman with the company's southwestern branch based in Chengdu."The flight leaves Chengdu at 5:50 a.m. and arrives in Lhasa two hours later," said Bao. "It leaves Lhasa at 8:40 a.m. and arrives Ngari at 10:20 a.m."At an altitude of 4,274 meters with a 4,500-meter runway, Gunsa Airport is now the third highest airport in the world. BEIJING, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- Urban residents who expect home prices to fall in first-tier Chinese cities in the second quarter outnumber those who anticipate further price hikes, according to a report by the China Economic Monitoring and Analysis Center released here Thursday.About 41 percent of those surveyed in the second quarter expected house prices to fall in popular first-tier cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen -- 18 percentage points higher than the proportion in the first quarter, according to the center which is under the National Bureau of Statistics.Meanwhile, only 36 percent of those surveyed in the second quarter anticipated house prices to continue to rise in those first-tier cities -- 24 basis points lower than the first quarter.In the second quarter, more people are expecting house prices to decline in cities at various levels, even as the proportions vary in different cities, according to the report.About 30 percent of consumers in provincial capital cities anticipated home prices to weaken in the second quarter, compared with 15 percent in the first quarter.In other small- and medium-sized cities, 28 percent of consumers surveyed foresaw house price falling in the future, up more than 11 basis points from the first quarter."The result show government measures to tighten the housing market since mid April have begun to have an effect on urban consumers' expectations," said Pan Jiancheng, deputy director of the China Economic Monitoring and Analysis Center.In spite of the rising proportions, the number of those who anticipated house price declines, however, still fell short of those who expected further price hikes in cities, except for consumers in the first-tier cities, according to the report.Housing prices in major Chinese cities rose 10.3 percent year on year in July, compared with 11.4 percent growth in June, according to NBS data released Tuesday.Property prices in 70 large and medium-sized cities grew 12.4 percent in May and 12.8 percent in April, the highest growth rate since July 2005 when the government started publishing the data.

BEIJING, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- A total of 600 soldiers with the Lanzhou Military Area Command have arrived at mudslides-devastated Zhouqu county in northwest China's Gansu Province, and started relief work.Three other detachments consisting of more than 1,700 soldiers with the command as well as a 180-member medical team are on their way to the affected areas.Six helicopters, including four from the Lanzhou command and two from the Xinjiang Military Area Command, have also departed for the affected areas.China's armed police have also sent 2,100 members to help with the relief work, with 740 of them having arrived at the scene.
