SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Governor Gavin Newsom's announcement Friday on the fall school year left many parents unsure what to expect.Schools have a list of guidelines they must comply with to open in person classes. The most difficult guideline, potentially, is to stay off the state's watch list for 14 consecutive days.This leaves parents in limbo.Tancy Campbell has been juggling a 9-year-old, 5-year-old with special needs, and an Esty shop while her husband is deployed with the Navy. She is less nervous about her 9-year-old who understands social distancing and mask etiquette, but her 5-year-old son hasn't reached that level yet."I'm worried about him going but I'm worried about him staying as well so it's like a double-edged sword," Campbell said.She said he has autism and is regressing without social interaction, but if he were to go to school right now she's worried he could catch coronavirus. These stresses piling up over the past four months.Licensed Psychologist Dr. Michelle Carcel said she's heard from a lot of exhausted parents and has this advice, "all of us need to take a step back and realize this is an imperfect situation and mistakes will be made and that's okay."She said it's important to create a routine to set barriers with the kids. "Also putting signs in different places where there's play area time and where there's school time. So that way you're making a division with work and play," Carcel added.Post a schedule somewhere that everyone can read, so the kids know when parents are busy and when they can have their attention.She suggests dividing and conquering if possible. Enlist help from your partner, or family members to divvy up the childcare responsibilities.She also said if you aren't happy about the decisions being made, let your representatives know. "You're not helpless, you're not alone, make sure you advocate for you and your family," Carcel said.Most importantly, don't forget to take care of yourself."I would just like to tell all the mommas and the daddies to stay strong if they're at home with their kids, it's a lot," Campbell said.A lot to handle, but a labor of love. 2320

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Despite skyrocketing prices, San Diego’s housing inventory is up in 2018, according to a new report by Trulia. The trend in America’s Finest City sits opposite the national trend, which is seeing a declining inventory. The national drop in inventory in the fourth quarter of 2018 was mainly driven by a drop in for-sale homes, however, in San Diego, the total for-sale inventory rose by more than 27 percent. San Diego’s trade-up inventory saw the largest increase at more than 46 percent. The report points out that, despite inventory gains in San Diego, prices continue to rise, outpacing wage growth. The trend places homeownership out of reach for many first-time homebuyers. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Four Democrats running to be governor of California faced off in a debate in San Diego Thursday night.The San Diego County Democratic Party hosted the debate between John Chaing, Delaine Eastin, Gavin Newsom and Antonio Villaraigosa.The Democratic Convention is set to begin Friday. The candidates were asked a wide range of questions from fixing the tax system to housing and small business.A topic that led the charge was the topic of gun control. All candidates said they support stricter gun laws.A poll released two weeks ago shows Newsom leading Villaraigosa 23 to 21 percent. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Drone footage recently captured a rare sighting of a blue whale off San Diego's coastline, as it swims right up to a small boat.Domenic Biagini, owner of Gone Whale Watching, says he's already starting to see blue whale sightings off San Diego's coastline this season. In one video he captured, a whale swims up to his boat to investigate before disappearing below the water's surface."This year is looking like much more of a normal year," Biagini said. "I think this is really going to shape up to be a really good blue whale season."He adds that an abundance of krill and pristine conditions are leading to the sightings. Blue whales generally follow where krill are swimming in coastal waters. If there's a high level of krill, the whales will typically spend the entire summer nearby.Blue whale sightings come in spurts, Biagini says, while grey whales are more reliable, making this season even more of a treat for whale watchers.And whale watching could be a safe alternative to sight-seeing this summer, according to Biagini. He says he's currently running private charters, so groups are limited to single household unit sizes and there's enough room for people to space out."These are the largest animals that have ever lived on our planet," Biagini said. "People that get to see them, there's not many."Not a lot of information is known about the mating and breeding habits of blue whales, giving researchers even more opportunities to learn about the animals. 1498
