SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - In preparation for one of the most advanced fighter jets in the world, Marine Corps Air Station Miramar is planning security upgrades to its airfield perimeter fence.10News discovered it’s one of nine large-scale construction projects that Miramar will be doing over the next decade."These construction projects here are what enables, that is what brings our national defense policy and strategy to reality," said Public Works Officer Lt. Commander Travis Brinkman.Currently being built in the heart of MCAS Miramar is a 160,000 square foot hangar is designed to hold up to 12 F-35s.It's the first of three hangars planned for the location."The need to provide modern facilities as well as the F-35 has specific requirements, specific systems that need different maintenance, different capabilities within the facility itself to provide that maintenance,” said Brinkman. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Longtime San Diego State football coach Rocky Long is stepping down after nine seasons.San Diego State officials announced Wednesday that Long will be replaced by Aztecs defensive line coach Brady Hoke.Hoke was SDSU's head coach in 2009 and 2010 before leaving to become head coach at Michigan. Long served as defensive coordinator under Hoke and replaced him when he left in 2010.RELATED: San Diego State basketball reaches top ten in polls for first time since 2014During his nine seasons as head coach, Long lead the team to a 81-38 record, three Mountain West Conference championships, and four 10-win seasons since 2015. He owns Social Tap San Diego, located next to the ballpark. Due to public health orders, the capacity at their restaurant was significantly reduced. However, they were able to fill the tables and chairs set up in their outdoor areas, and by the start of the game, they had a healthy waitlist.Crenshaw says despite the pandemic, Opening Day still brought more people out than usual."This is baseball. We're Americans. They go hand in hand," he said. It's definitely special and were playing the hand we're dealt."Meanwhile, there were many fans spotted decked out in game-day gear trying to catch a glimpse of the game from their balconies near the ballpark. Some fans waved Padres flags from the balcony to show support.Chip Messenger kept opening day tradition going by watching from his balcony. He has a great view of the field and has invited a small group of people to watch the game from the outdoor vantage point. He plans to share the spot with other people as the season goes on."I run a tight ship on opening day, this is my 8th or 9th opening day from my balcony," Messenger said. "So you invite people you can't have too many, but I want to start inviting people I don't know in a few days. There's going to be like some babies for the time, moms and dads, couples you know. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Mayor Kevin Faulconer Saturday detailed plans to redevelop the Sports Arena site, officially announcing what developers will tackle the project.According to Faulconer, the plan incorporates a mix of entertainment, housing, and parks."The vision for this property is for a world-class arena, park space and amenities," Faulconer said. "A new arena has always been a priority of mine, and it's the right time."Brookfield Housing and ASM Global were chosen to construct the new arena and thousands of housing units, beating out the other finalist, Toll Brothers Housing.The redevelopment area encompasses roughly 48 acres in the Midway-Pacific Highway Community area. At the press conference, representatives from the Gulls and the Seals spoke, saying they're excited for their teams to play in the new space. Faulconer said the city's goal is to include a new arena to replace Pechanga Arena."The vision for this property is for a world-class arena, park space and amenities," Faulconer said. "A new arena has always been a priority of mine, and it's the right time."The city also released several renderings of the planned development. Leaders said they are now looking toward November when Measure E will be on the ballot. This will determine if the 30-foot maximum height for buildings will remain, or if it will be raised.
