SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Blake Davis' story is filled with chapters of love and laughter."We used to call him a smiley meatball! He was always a big guy, always in the 100th percentile in terms of growth and just really animated and really fun to be around," said Blake's mom, Leah. But at 14 months old, their seemingly healthy baby stopped breathing at the park. He was revived and rushed to the hospital. "He was diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension, so high blood pressure of the lungs," said Rob, Blake's dad.Doctors told Rob and Leah that this was rare in children. "We were overwhelmed lost, devastated, had no clue what was going on, what his future would be, and felt totally helpless," the couple said.As the months passed inside the hospital, friends and family asked what they could do to help. The family asked that they do something kind in Blake's honor, and share the story on a Facebook page created for Blake."It was this really, really beautiful, uplifting thing happening in the world during our darkest moments," said Leah. Blake was eventually released from the hospital, but months later, his condition then worsened. He needed a lung transplant."Ultimately, on January 2 of 2019, we got the news he was unanimously accepted onto the lung transplant registry. And that was the day he passed," said Leah. But the good deeds continued. "There are a lot that don't cost a penny. Helping someone at the grocery store, planting a tree, cleaning a beach," said Leah. What started in San Diego spread across the country and then the world. "Any selfless act whether it costs money or is free, anything positive and uplifting," said Rob.The Davis family created a website to document the movement sparked by Blake. People can share kind acts inspired by Blake through the website's "good deed tracker."The family also created kindness cards people can use to help share Blake's story. "Ultimately, it keeps Blake alive, it perpetuates his legacy, which is a beautiful one," said Leah and Rob. You can share good deeds and learn more about Blake on the website ForBlake.org. 2091

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Birch Aquarium welcomed two new residents to its waters this month, a first-ever for the aquarium.Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography bred and hatched two rare Weedy Seadragons for the first time, making the aquarium one of the few in the world to now house the fish. The fragile newborns, native to southern Australia, are under an inch long, but have already started eating tiny shrimp. The birth is the product of the aquarium's conservation efforts for the once "near threatened" sea life.RELATED: Rainbow Eucalyptus trees blooming across San Diego“We are elated to have breeding success with our Weedy Seadragons. This is a momentous event for our team and our seahorse and seadragon breeding program,” said Jennifer Nero Moffatt, the aquarium’s senior director of animal care, science and conservation. “Seadragons are charismatic, sensitive, and require detailed husbandry. We have spent over 25 years working with these animals and love that we have made the next steps to conserve this delicate species.”Weedy Seadragons perform an elaborate mating display, spinning snout-to-snout and moving up and down in a water column to transfer eggs from the female onto the male's tail, where they are fertilized and hatched 6 weeks later. This is the first instance of the seadragon's fertilization and hatching occurring at the aquarium.RELATED: San Diego Symphony's 'The Shell' gets opening dateThe fish is now listed as "least concern" on the endangered species list, partially due to a lack of population data. The fish's habitat and camouflage make it extremely difficult to locate in the wild. But, they are still threatened by climate change, warming waters, compromised habitats, and fishing.“This is an exciting day for Birch Aquarium. Not only are these births a major accomplishment for our talented Husbandry team, but also an exciting step in our commitment to conservation ,” said Harry Helling, Birch Aquarium's executive director. While the newborn Weedy Seadragons are not on display for the public due to yearly habitat deep-cleaning, the aquarium's "Seadragons & Seahorses" exhibit is open for guests. 2168

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — California public health officials say the Southern California region has run out of ICU bed capacity. The region, which includes San Diego and 10 other counties, hit 0% capacity, as the state reported 52,200 more coronavirus cases on Thursday. California officials say regional ICU capacity is calculated based on the total number of adult ICU beds minus neonatal and pediatric ICU beds. Adult ICU capacity includes staffed ICU beds and ICU surge beds.San Diego County said Thursday that it was currently at 16% ICU capacity after adding 2,604 new virus cases. There are 295 ICU cases in the county out of 1,186 hospitalizations. County health officials said there has been a 20% increase in ICU cases locally over the last seven days. The Southern California region was one of four regions under the 15% ICU capacity threshold for California's recent stay-at-home order:Bay Area: 13.1%Greater Sacramento Region: 11.3%Northern California: 25.8%San Joaquin Valley: 0.7%Southern California: 0.0%The Southern California region includes Imperial, Inyo, Los Angeles, Mono, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties. 1182

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As winter approaches, doctors are worried about more than the novel coronavirus."When winter comes we all tend to go indoors, and [viruses are] more likely to spread between us in school, in workplaces it's just going to happen," Dr. Davey Smith, Chief of Infectious Diseases at UC San Diego, said.If you develop a cough, fever, chills and you're achy, Dr. Smith said it could be a variety of viruses."We are going to have multiple viruses running around in the community at the same time. Double triple, it's not just the flu it's RSV that kids oftentimes get, adenoviruses and other seasonal viruses and they all look the same," he said.Dr. Smith is urging San Diegans to get a flu shot, especially this year, concerned about the hospital being overrun, "it's not just the PPE, it's the hospital beds, the doctors and the nurses, and everybody who has to take care of them."Cajon Valley Union School District has had students on campus since July. Poway is bringing students back on campus as part of a phased reopening plan.Vista Unified School District plans to reopen Tuesday.According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, one million Americans returned to work in September. That combined with local COVID-19 cases rising, we could be in for a rough Fall and Winter.Dr. Davey said vigilance is key, "that means masks, washing our hands, staying at a safe distance, and if we can't do that then we're going to have problems in San Diego." 1467
