(KGTV) - A furnace door was not closed while the system was being operated at a San Diego County, California crematorium Thursday, sending heavy smoke containing the ashes of human remains above the area.The problem was reported at 12:15 p.m. at the Cortez Family Crematorium at 100 W. 35th St in National City, near Interstate 5 and SR-54.National City Fire Captain Brian Krebs said the furnace was in use and the oven door was not shut, sending smoke out of the chimney and the open doors of the building.The building’s heat detectors activated the fire extinguishers, according to a funeral home employee. Firefighters said the extinguishers gave off a strong odor. There were human remains in the smoke, Krebs confirmed. (KGTV) -- Police are looking for the driver of a BMW that crashed into a church fence in National City while attempting to escape a separate hit-and-run crash.According to National City police, it happened around 12:15 a.m. on Palm Avenue, leaving behind a trail of destruction in front of the church.Police say it all started when the BMW driver rear-ended a white Camaro at the intersection of Division Street and Palm Avenue. Moments later, the driver hit the gas trying to speed away from the crash but then hit another car, lost control, and crashed into a church fence.The BMW caught fire, but witnesses helped put it out before firefighters arrived.Witnesses say they saw a man and possibly one passenger running from the scene.No one was hurt.Police did find a shoe left behind at the scene and hope it will help lead to the suspect driver. 878

According to Cal Fire, the blaze dubbed the Tenaja Fire started around 4 p.m. near Tenaja Road and Clinton Keith Road. The Riverside County Fire Department reports that the fire is burning in an area with heavy fuels with a rapid rate of spread. As of 7:45 p.m. Wednesday night, Cal Fire said the blaze had so far scorched 250 acres and is 5 percent contained. More studies seem to indicate there is some connection between a person’s severity of COVID-19 symptoms and their blood type. However, experts agree more research is needed and these studies do not allow people with certain blood types to disregard pandemic safety precautions.The two latest studies, one from Denmark and one from Canada, both appear to show that people with blood type O may be slightly less vulnerable to COVID-19 and have a reduced chance of getting severely ill.In the Danish study, researchers looked at more than 7,400 people who tested positive for COVID-19. Of those, 38.4 percent had blood type O, while other research indicates that blood type makes up about 41.7 percent of the population.In the Canadian study, they looked at the length of hospital stays for 95 people critically ill with the coronavirus. They found the portion of patients who needed mechanical ventilation was higher in those with blood type A or AB when compared with a group of patients with blood type O or B.Researchers also found the blood type A or AB group had longer stays in the intensive care unit, a median of 13.5 days, compared to the other group with blood type O or B who had a median of 9 days."I don't think this supersedes other risk factors of severity like age and co-morbities and so forth,” Dr. Mypinder Sekhon, who is a clinical assistant professor in the Division of Critical Care Medicine and Department of Medicine at the University of British Columbia told CNN."If one is blood group A, you don't need to start panicking. And if you're blood group O, you're not free to go to the pubs and bars."Researchers say this information could be used in some way in regard to treatment of COVID-19.
