A Louisville police officer under investigation in the Breonna Taylor case penned an early-morning email to about 1,000 fellow officers Tuesday in which he claimed Louisville's mayor and police chief "failed" the department, and accused the FBI of enforcing civil rights violations. The story was first reported by VICE News' Roberto Ferdman. New: LMPD Sgt. Jonathan Mattingly (who is being investigated as part of Breonna Taylor’s case) sent an email to around 1,000 officers at 2am that calls protestors thugs, complains about the government enforcing civil rights violations, and claims this is "good versus evil” pic.twitter.com/VcuyPDP790— Roberto Aram Ferdman (@robferdman) September 22, 2020 LMPD Sgt. Jonathan Mattingly said regardless of the outcome of the investigation, he believes he and fellow officers did the "legal, moral and ethical thing" on March 13 when LMPD served a "no-knock" narcotics search warrant at Taylor's home, which ended in the shooting death of the 26-year-old medical worker."It's sad how the good guys are demonized, and criminals are canonized," Mattingly said in the email. "Put that aside for a while keep your focus and do your jobs that you are trained and capable of doing."He also expressed his support for his fellow LMPD officers and implored them to stay safe as the results of the investigation unfold."Stay safe and do the right thing," Mattingly said. "YOU ARE LOVED AND SUPPORTED by most of the community. Now go be the warriors you are, but please stay safe!"An officer was shot during the raid by Taylor's boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, who has said he thought he was defending against a home invasion. Walker was initially charged, but those charges were later dropped.LMPD Officer Myles Cosgrove was also placed on administrative reassignment for his role in the incident. Brett Hankison was fired in June after the department said he violated procedures by showing "extreme indifference to the value of human life."LMPD said Tuesday it will be restricting access to downtown in preparation for an announcement by Attorney General Daniel Cameron on what criminal charges, if any, the officers involved in Taylor's death will face. On Monday, Chief of Police Robert J. Schroeder declared a state of emergency for the department as it awaits the announcement, and canceled all off days and vacation requests for officers until further notice. LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The robotics lab at the University of Louisville is a lot like a toy shop. “You don’t feel like you’re working with them, more like you’re playing around with robots,” said Sumit Das, a researcher at the lab. For him, it’s a dream come true. “I was always tinkering with things and making new stuff and my parents always encouraging me to do new stuff and even if I failed, they would be like, ‘it’s ok, move on to the next project.’ So, it has always been a project after project after project,” said Das. But here’s the thing. He’s not playing around. Sumit and PhD student Shamsudeen Abubakar, who goes by Abu, are part of a research team building a robot to help people heal. “So, in my estimate, about 5 to 10 years, hopefully we’ll see them be able to work alongside nurses,” said Das. This is ARNA—the Adaptive Nursing Robot Assistant. ARNA is built to help nurses do their job. “So you push on this like a walker that elderly people use,” said Abubakar The robot can do a few things: monitor a patients vital signs, pick things up and bring them to a patient, and help them walk down a hallway. “This robot really has the potential to diminish the incident of patient falls,” said Cindi Logsdon, a nursing profesor at the University of Louisville. Patient falls are a big deal, and Logsdon knows. She’s a consultant on the project and was the Associate Chief of Nursing at the University of Louisville Hospital for almost 10 years. “A big reason that patients fall when they’re in hospitals is they try and get out of bed by themselves, or they try and reach something that they can’t reach, or they depend on the darn bedside table,” said Logsdon. According to the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality, between 700,000 and 1 million patients fall in hospitals each year. Everyone involved in the project is hoping the robot will make a big difference in the U.S. and abroad. “I’m from Nigeria which is a developing country and I think robotics offers an avenue to kind of, you know, not jump the steps in development but kind of close the gap,” said Abubakar. “If there are any of the basic sort of skills that a robot could take over in collaboration with the nurses, in partnership with a nurse, it frees up the nurse for more higher level activities,” said Logsdon. “It’s about how to assist them in doing tasks that can eat their time up,” said Das. I know what you’re thinking. Sure these robots may help us heal in the hospital, but what’s to stop them from becoming self-aware and destroying the human race? “I think that’s limited to fiction. I don’t think that’s going to be a reality as it’s shown in Hollywood. I wouldn’t be worried about that,” said Das. 2725

NEW ORLEANS, La. – Just before the lunch rush at one New Orleans restaurant, the hottest spot is the kitchen. The place is Café Reconcile: a restaurant that caters to both customers and its employees. “It’s not your typical job. It’s not the typical restaurant,” said Chef Eugene Charles Temple, Jr. “We come in here to change lives.” The café specializes in teaching culinary skills to disadvantaged young people, by training them to take on all aspects of restaurant work. It goes far beyond that, though. The café offers counseling and teaches classes on life skills – like how to open a bank account. “No one’s forcing them to come here,” said Gerald Duhon, Executive Director of Café Reconcile. “They want a change in their life.” Ahmaad Lott felt that first-hand. “To be honest, you know, I wasn’t in a great situation,” Lott said. Several years ago, he was facing mental health issues. Lott got help and eventually rose through the ranks at Café Reconcile to become a trainer to others dealing with similar circumstances. “That was me a few years ago,” Lott said. “I barely know this young person, but to know their story resonates to my story so deeply, and in a way that, you know, we can share our experiences and grow together.” Several thousand young people have graduated from Café Reconcile since it began more than two decades ago. However, the issue of “disconnected youth” is not limited to New Orleans. A 2014 Tulane University study found that, across the country, there are 6.7 million disconnected youth, costing the U.S. economy billion a year in lost tax revenues and needed social services. “The way we look at it is our young people don’t have anything wrong with them,” Duhon said. “What they have that many young people do not have is support—and particularly support around the barriers that are in their life.” It’s a support for which Ahmaad Lott says he’s grateful. “That gave me that avenue, that gave me that channel to really make something of myself,” he said. Lott has now also worked in a five-star restaurant in the French Quarter, following in the footsteps of thousands of others who found refuge at Reconcile. Gov. Phil Murphy got an earful from two women over the weekend while he ate dinner with his family at a New Jersey restaurant, video of the encounter shows. The brief video shows the women happen upon the governor as he is eating at a table outside of a restaurant in Red Bank on Saturday night. The women launch into expletive-filled rants and, at one point, argue with Murphy’s son before the video ends.Warning: The video below contains language that some may find offensive New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy confronted while having dinner with his maskless family.**Language Warning**pic.twitter.com/6O3Jug0YmS — Breaking911 (@Breaking911) November 23, 2020 The governor addressed the video, which was posted on Twitter Sunday night, during a coronavirus briefing Monday afternoon.Murphy said nothing happened before the women approached the table and a third friend who was with them pulled the pair away after the video ended.“I have literally no idea who they were,” the governor added.Murphy said he and his wife have thick skin and he’s a "big boy” who can handle criticism, but added that his children should be left out of it.When asked what may have motivated the women to heckle him, Murphy connected the incident to the stress people are feeling because of the pandemic.“I started out with stress at the front-end of my remarks. There’s more stress in our state and our country than I think any of us have ever seen,” he said. “The stress levels are overwhelming, and they’re not unfounded. There’s too many people out of work … too much economic hardship.”Murphy also said no one was wearing masks at the table because everyone was actively eating when the women approached. LOS ALGODONES, Mexico — Just a few miles west of Yuma, Arizona, you’ll find a small but busy town just across the border — Los Algodones, Mexico. You’ve probably never heard of it, but people will travel thousands of miles to visit. Angela Luck flew from Alaska. “To San Diego, got a rental car, drove to Yuma, overnighted there. Drove here,” Luck said. She does it to save hundreds — if not thousands — of dollars on dental work. And she's not alone in doing it.
