(KGTV) - A fraternity at San Diego State has been placed under interim suspension after a freshman membered was injured.The mother of the student told 10News he suffered a concussion, as well as a fractured wrist, sprained ankle, and bruises on his back.It’s unclear exactly when or how the injuries occurred, but the student’s mom said he had been at an event at the Kappa Alpha fraternity house on Wednesday, October 17. She claims he “blacked out” from drinking too much alcohol.He made it back to his dorm, not receiving any medical care until hours later when a nurse administering meningitis shots noticed his injuries.San Diego State issued a statement to 10News, writing: 710

San Diego (KGTV)- As teachers come up with their virtual lesson plans for the upcoming school year, one local music teacher is turning to the community. Students at Grossmont High School need guitars for class."We'll have 80 students plus taking guitar this year," says teacher Jeremy Cooke. "It is vital for them to be able to play a guitar at home."The high school is not able to provide an instrument for each student."We're a Title I school. So over half of our students get free or reduced lunch, and many can't afford their own guitar."Cooke made a post on Facebook asking for the community to donate any used or new guitars. He says the response has been amazing. As of Monday afternoon, Cooke has received over 30 guitars. Many others are pledging to donate."I've been driving around the county picking up guitars, meeting the people who are donating, and its really neat to see, especially during these tough times."As part of his distance learning plan, Cook has compiled multiple videos recorded over the years to help students learn to play the guitar.Once the class is finished, the students will return the donated guitars to the school for others to use the following year.Grossmont High School is still in need of more guitars. Cooke says he is accepting used and new acoustic or electric guitars for the upcoming school year. SAN DIEGO (KGVT) -- Parents of San Diego Unified School District students will hold a demonstration Tuesday with a goal for the school district to return to full-time, in-person education as soon as possible.Parent and family therapist Gina Smith said she started the group called "Reopen SDUSD" because she is frustrated that other San Diego County districts have set reopening dates, and many private schools are already open. The group has already started a petition which has more than 650 signatures."What sparked the fire is that other schools have reopening plans within weeks and San Diego Unifed has been silent," Smith said.San Diego Unified has not released any definitive dates or a timeline for reopening.Currently, the district is reporting a projected loss of 2,474 students. Two out of every three un-enrolled students are kindergartners. Enrolling children into kindergarten is not mandatory in the state of California.The district has a meeting scheduled for Tuesday evening, and before that meeting, hundreds of parents are expected to rally over their concerns about distance learning. Some parents say they're concerned about the mental health impact distance learning is having on their children."The isolation and lack of social interaction is a huge part that many children as young as five are experiencing depressive symptoms", Smith said. The group also will hold a protest outside San Diego Unified’s District headquarters Tuesday at 4 p.m., before the school board meeting at 5 p.m. 1519

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Thousands of refugees, immigrants and asylum seekers are finding a place to stay through the Safe Harbors Network, an organization which got its start at the Christ United Methodist Church in Normal Heights. Pastor Bill Jenkins began giving shelter to Haitian refugees back in 2009. And for quite a while the church was the only immigrant welcoming shelter in southern California. Eventually, the Safe Harbors Network was created. It's a growing collection of churches, organizations, and individuals that house refugees, immigrants and asylum seekers. Pastor Jenkins says he's seen an explosion of interest from people wanting to help in recent months after Trump's zero-tolerance immigration policy went into effect. Safe Harbors works in cooperation with ICE to give shelter to people awaiting their day in court.   886

San Diego County welcomed its first baby of 2019 at 12:04 a.m. Ainhara Abegail Banos was born at Scripps Mercy Hospital in Chula Vista at 7 pounds and 14 ounces. The bundle of joy is 20 inches tall. Her mother, Elizabeth Morales, said Ainhara's three older sisters can't wait to meet her. "They're waiting for her!" Morales said. She joked that her other daughters, however, "wanted a boy."Morales thought she would have a quiet New Year's Eve because the baby wasn't due until the middle of January. While at home, Morales' water broke and her sister brought her to the hospital. Even though Morales has three other children, she said she was still nervous. Even for seasoned veterans of the hospital, the first baby of the year is always exciting."I've been doing this for over 30 years. I still get goosebumps every time a baby is born," said Elizabeth Retts, Director of Maternal Health.Morales and the baby will be discharged tomorrow. 949
