 A Florida man has been charged with 144 counts related to cruelty to animals.The State Attorney's Office has charged 51-year-old Robert David Starkweather after investigators found what 77 cows, 48 calves, and 2 donkeys found on his Hendry County farm.Photos taken by the local Sheriff's Office showed animals as bags of bones."That's got to be the most horrific fate, worst way to go," local animal rescuer Carey Kendzior said. "These are massive animals and it would take months to let it get to that point of cruelty and neglect. There's no excuse."Rescuers came too late for some. There were 13 animals found dead upon arrival."I don't care who you are. No reason for you to be in charge of animals," Kendzior said.The Hendry County Sheriff's Office investigated the case with assistance from both the Lee County Sheriff's Office and the Collier County Sheriff's Office. The animals were sized and were taken from the property and moved to another location.One calf died and five had to be euthanized due to their poor health conditions after being looked at by a veterinarian.Dr. Laura Braun is a vet in Fort Myers. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego’s largest wholesale produce supplier says local restaurants would feel the effects of a possible border shutdown. Specialty Produce delivers to more than 700 San Diego restaurants and hotels seven days a week. 40 to 50 percent of the company’s produce comes from Mexico. If supplies aren’t available, prices will go up, according to owner Bob Harrington. “It’s a really bad idea really bad not to trade with Mexico,” Harrington says. Harrington sells 1,200 pounds of Mexican-grown basil a week in San Diego. If he bought the herb in the United States, the price would double. The cost of pineapples would go up 40 percent, Harrington estimates. Items like cucumbers, Roma tomatoes, strawberries, asparagus, and limes would be difficult to find without enough supply to meet the demand. “You won't get fresh limes at restaurants anymore. When you go get margarita you won't have a fresh lime in it.” “It may push restaurants over the edge. Two days of treats!The group that petitioned to move Halloween to the last Saturday of October has a new proposal: Rather than change the date, why not add a whole extra day of spooks and haunts?On Wednesday, the Halloween & Costume Association proposed a new holiday: National Trick or Treat Day. It would fall on the last Saturday of October and thereby extend the official Halloween celebration, rather than moving it.Amending its initial change.org petition that garnered more than 100,000 signatures, the trade group said the new holiday will "enhance the Halloween that we all know and love" and unite the country in the process.The association will partner with Party City to launch #ALLoween, a campaign to promote the new holiday that -- fittingly -- hits stores on Friday, September 13, according to the petition.The association's campaign to shift Halloween to a Saturday began in 2018. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A cyclist says he narrowly escaped injury after finding a camouflaged 'booby trap' on a popular trail along Lake Hodges.Steven Lennox made the discovery minutes into his bike ride Friday afternoon on a trail in the San Dieguito River Park. He was taking photos that afternoon, so he was going slower than normal and stopped when he saw the shadow on the ground."It was a shadow line all the way across. I looked up from there and I saw the ivy," said Lennox.But the ivy wasn't the only thing stretched across the trail. "As I got closer, I saw the rusty wire," said Lennox.In several photos he took, the ivy is seen intertwined with barbed wire and tied to a tree."Three to four loops ... had to weave it though. Somebody spent some time putting it together," said Lennox.The barbed wire appeared to be pulled from an old fence and camouflaged with a nearby vine."When you're being deceptive and hiding something, that's being cruel," said Lennox.The wire was strewn across at a height that would hit a cyclist in the chest or neck area."I don't think someone would have enough speed to cut their head off, but somebody could snap a neck," said Lennox.The discovery was made along a trail popular with cyclists, hikers and horseback riders. Rangers didn't find any similar hazards on the trail and tell us there haven't been any similar incidents in the past.
