LOS ANGELES, May 2 (Xinhua) -- An asteroid will fly past Earth this fall at a close approach that will allow a close-up view of one of Earth's good-sized space rocks, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) announced on Monday."On November 8, asteroid 2005 YU55 will fly past Earth and at its closest approach point will be about 325,000 kilometers away," said Don Yeomans, manager of NASA's Near-Earth Object Program Office at the JPL in Pasadena, Los Angeles."This asteroid is about 400 meters wide -- the largest space rock we have identified that will come this close until 2028."Despite the relative proximity and size, "YU55 poses no threat of an Earth collision over, at the very least, the next 100 years, " Yeomans said in a press release."During its closest approach, its gravitational effect on the Earth will be so miniscule as to be immeasurable. It will not affect the tides or anything else.""While near-Earth objects of this size have flown within a lunar distance in the past, we did not have the foreknowledge and technology to take advantage of the opportunity," said Barbara Wilson, a scientist at JPL. "When it flies past, it should be a great opportunity for science instruments on the ground to get a good look.""The best resolution of the radar images was 7.5 meters per pixel," said JPL radar astronomer Lance Benner. "When 2005 YU55 returns this fall, we intend to image it at 4-meter resolution with our recently upgraded equipment at the Deep Space Network at Goldstone, California. Plus, the asteroid will be seven times closer. We're expecting some very detailed radar images."Asteroid 2005 YU55 was discovered in December 2005 by Robert McMillan, head of the NASA-funded Spacewatch Program at the University of Arizona, Tucson. The space rock has been in astronomers' crosshairs before.In April 2010, Mike Nolan and colleagues at the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico generated some ghostly images of 2005 YU55 when the asteroid was about 2.3 million kilometers from Earth.

BEIJING, March 15 (Xinhuanet) --After one-year effort of developing, Microsoft is going to release its newest web browser Internet Explorer 9 at 9:00 p.m. Pacific time on Monday, according to media reports.The IE 9 will be the first major Web browser to include a do-not-track tool that helps people keep their online habits from being monitored, which makes Google Inc. and Apple Inc. the only big providers of browsers that haven't yet declared their support for a do-no-track system in their products.IE 9 can work on computers running Windows Vista and Windows 7 operating systems, but not compatible with Windows XP.This final release-to-Web version of IE 9 represents the ninth release since the first platform preview of the browser appeared at the MIX 10 Web developer event, said Ryan Gavin, the senior director of Internet Explorer business and marketing. Gavin pointed out that the browser has already made its mark in Microsoft's download history."We're seeing now upwards of two percent share already on Windows 7 for IE 9, even in beta stage. HAIKOU, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- China's aviation authorities on Friday started to allow helicopters to fly in low-altitude airspace over the tourist island of Hainan on a trial basis for the first time. The aim is to eventually open a part of the country's tightly-controlled airspace to private aircraft.Four helicopters were manned by eight pilots from Shanghai-based Zhengyang Investment Group, a leading domestic firm in the general aviation industry. They are expected to conduct test flights in the sky, 1,000 meters above the ground in Hainan in the next two months.The flight test will collect data for low-altitude flying and test the ground control system's response to emergencies, said Zou Jianming, chairman of Zhengyang Investment Group.Hainan is the first place in China to conduct test flights of private aircraft in low-altitude airspace, said Jiang Sixian, deputy governor of the province. Domestic and foreign firms are both welcome to invest in Hainan's general aviation sector to develop world-class tourism here.China's low-altitude airspace is controlled by the Air Force and the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC). Every private aircraft flight needs approval, and the procedure can take from one day up to a week.But last November, the State Council and the Central Military Commission said that part of the low-altitude airspace would be opened to promote the country's general aviation sector, including the purchase and use of private planes.General aviation refers to the part of the aviation industry that excludes flights for military, law enforcement and public transport. China has only 900 aircraft, 80 airports and fewer than 10,000 pilots in the general aviation segment.The market for general aviation in China is valued at only 13 billion yuan (1.98 billion U.S. dollars) but is expected to grow by 15 percent annually until 2020, Hainan aviation officials said.
