BEIJING, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping has called for more efforts to promote the building of Communist Party of China (CPC) organizations at grassroots level and in non-public-owned enterprises. AUCKLAND, June 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping arrived at Auckland on Thursday morning, starting his official visit to New Zealand.Xi made the tour as a guest of New Zealand Prime Minister John Key.In a written speech distributed at the airport upon his arrival, Xi said currently the relationship between China and New Zealand is at its best time.He said the two sides see frequent exchange of high-level visits, marked achievements have been scored in bilateral trade and economic cooperation, and cultural exchange has been deepened, which has brought substantial benefits to both countries and both peoples, and also contributed to the peace, stability and prosperity of the Asia-Pacific region at large.The Chinese government has always attached importance to its relations with New Zealand, Xi said.The Chinese vice president said he was looking forward to meeting with leaders and people from all walks of New Zealand, aiming at discussing new approaches to enhancing bilateral friendship and exploring new cooperation.He said that he believes his visit would increase mutual trust, deepen friendship and expand cooperation, thus advancing the comprehensive bilateral cooperative relationship to a new starting point.During his stay in New Zealand, Xi is expected to hold talks with John Key and meet with Governor-General Anand Satyanand and other leaders. The New Zealand is the third leg of Xi's four-nation visits. His last leg is Australia.

BEIJING, July 15 (Xinhua) -- At least 135 people had been confirmed dead and 41 are missing, as some of the worst flooding in years continues in south China.By 4 p.m. Thursday, close to 35.5 million people in 10 southern provinces and Chongqing Municipality had been affected by continuous rainstorms and floods since July 1, the Civil Affairs Ministry said in a notice on its website.About 113,000 homes were destroyed and more than 1.2 million people had been relocated, it said.Direct economic losses were estimated at about 26 billion yuan (3.8 billion U.S. dollars), up from Wednesday's 22.2 billion yuan.In Jiangxi Province alone, at least eight people have died since July 8, and direct economic losses have amounted to more than 2.9 billion yuan.The ministry had dispatched work groups to Jiangxi to direct relief work.The Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters announced earlier Thursday that floods had killed 594 people in 26 provinces since the beginning of the year. Another 212 people were missing.Direct economic losses cause by the floods totaled 120.2 billion yuan, the office said, adding that 97.5 million people and 6.16 million hectares of farmland were affected.In Hubei Province, continuous downpours and rain-triggered floods since July 3 have left 32 people dead and two missing.Heavy rainfall has raised water levels in many rivers in the middle and lower reaches of Yangtze River, China's longest, and a new round of rainstorm is expected to pelt the river course soon, bringing possibility of serious floods.The river's Three Gorges Dam raised the speed of water discharge Thursday afternoon to save space for the upcoming gushing flooding waters.

  

XI'AN, July 20 (Xinhua) -- Floods and landslides triggered by torrential rains have left at least 15 people dead and 54 missing in northwest China's Shaanxi Province, flood control authorities said late Monday.The lives of more than 1.33 million people were disrupted by the heavy flooding in 23 counties and cities in the southern regions of the province, said officials in the provincial flood control headquarters.Torrential rains have cut off roads, flattened homes, destroyed power facilities and flooded farmland in the worst-hit Ankang City, causing economic losses estimated at 881 million yuan (129 million U.S. dollars), said officials.In the mountainous county of Langao in Ankang, three people were reported dead and 17 still missing after landslides and mud-rock flows struck several villages late Sunday.Continuous rainfall has battered many Chinese provinces and regions over the past week.In neighboring Sichuan Province, flash floods and landslides left at least 26 people dead and more than 30 missing.China is also preparing for the worst Yangtze flooding in more than a decade as water levels in the upper and middle sections of China' s longest waterway continue rising.

  

BEIJING, July 20 (Xinhua) -- China has hailed its relationship with Thailand, calling the bilateral relationship exemplary.Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang made the remarks in a meeting with Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister, Suthep Thuagsuban, in Beijing on Monday.During the meeting, Li reviewed the 35 years of diplomatic ties between China and Thailand.Li said the two countries understand and respect each others' core interests.Calling the bilateral relationship a treasure for both nations, Li said the relationship is "a paradigm for how China and its neighboring countries can exist in harmony and benefit each other."Li highlighted the soaring trade volume between China and Thailand.He said China hopes to step up communication and deepen all-round trade cooperation with Thailand, as the China-ASEAN Free Trade Agreement boosts economic engagement.Suthep said Thailand values its ties with China and that it hopes to expand cooperation with China in all fields.
