SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police say a Chula Vista woman killed her mother in a Mission Valley office building, then shot herself days later with the same gun.Homicide detectives investigated the 911 call from an office building on Camino Del Rio South in Mission Valley on July 22.Officers found Maria Kelly, 66, dead inside her office.RELATED: SDPD: Mother murdered, daughter deadKelly's 34-year-old daughter, Crystal Vasquez, drove to the location hours later.Vasquez went into the restroom of a nearby business and was discovered dead of a gunshot wound.San Diego Police said Vasquez shot and killed her mother the afternoon of July 20. The next day, Vasquez cashed a ,000 check written from her mother's bank account.Police told 10News the Vasquez likely shot her mother after being confronted about stealing money from the family business. Vasquez embezzled money from her mother's Mission Valley accounting business for about a year, according to police. Police believe Vasquez shot herself after learning about the possibility of cameras at the building's entry and exit.A forensic examination confirmed the handgun Vasquez used to commit suicide was the same gun used to kill Kelly.  Video surveillance also showed Vasquez was in the office with Kelly at the time of the murder. 1330

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Saturday night, the Padres will welcome back one of the most iconic characters in franchise history.The Famous San Diego Chicken will return to Petco Park as part of the team's 50th anniversary celebration."It's like coming back and seeing family again," says Ted Giannoulas, the man behind the mascot. "It's great. These fans put me on the map. It was their laughter, their good faith over the decades that launched my unique career."The Chicken started in 1974 as a radio station mascot. Over the years, his popularity grew, turning the San Diego favorite in a national phenomenon.But it's been 10 years since the Chicken ruled the roost at a Padres game. The team decided their anniversary season was the right time to welcome him home."As you look back through our 50 year history, it was a piece of our story that we thought really needed to be told this year," says Marketing Director Wayne Partello.As part of the Chicken's return, the team will give away a San Diego Chicken bobble head to every fan at Saturday's game."It's the spitting image of me," says the Chicken, who partnered with the team to make sure they got every detail right, down to the coloring on individual feathers.The Chicken will also sign autographs and take pictures with fans throughout the game. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- SeaWorld San Diego’s Skyride reopened Wednesday after a ‘”gust of significant wind” caused the ride to close in mid-February. According to SeaWorld, the park, along with the ride’s manufacturer and the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health inspected various parts of the ride over the last several months, including the towers, gondolas, ride cables and various other equipment. SeaWorld says the ride’s communication cable was also replaced. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Serious crashes and traffic-related deaths have increased in San Diego, a trend the police department is hoping to reverse.One strategy to tackle the problem is education through enforcement operations.On Saturday officers focused on the Hillcrest and Linda Vista neighborhoods, citing drivers for speeding, making illegal turns, failing to stop for signs/signals and failing to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks. They also cited pedestrians crossing the street illegally or failing to yield to drivers who have the right of way. "For me personally I really want to see the number of our serious collisions reduced because when I am on my normal shift I do go to the serious injury collisions since I work traffic division, and it's just really disheartening and sad to see people involved in preventable collisions getting seriously injured," said traffic Sgt. Robert McDonald. McDonald says the city saw 56 fatalities in 2018, a roughly 51% increase in deaths from 2017. He says 34 of the fatalities were pedestrians. Officers were also targeting people on scooters breaking the rules. "I have seen more and more people riding the scooters on the street, like they're supposed to, instead of the sidewalk, but we still have a continuing problem with people riding on the sidewalk, going too fast, drinking, colliding, injuring themselves," said Sgt. McDonald.Funding for the program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. 1541

  

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego State University set a new record for its Aztec Rock Hunger annual food drive, collecting 590,503 pounds of food from Sept. 28 through Oct. 21, which the school will now donate to the Jacobs & Cushman Food Bank. The amount exceeds last years total of 588,915 pounds, and includes both non-perishable foods and  donations, which the school collected at the SDSU bookstore, athletic events, SDSU Dining locations and Aztec Proud events. Jim Flores, CEO of the Jacobs and Cushman San Diego Food Bank, said the partnership with the school, which has raised more than two million pounds of food since its inception in 2008, has been beneficial."We are very grateful to the students, faculty and administration at San Diego State University for supporting the food bank," Flores said. "We are currently feeding more than 37,000 people every month in communities throughout the county, including thousands of students through our College Hunger-relief Program." Aztecs Rock Hunger was started by Associated Students (A.S.) which works alongside multiple campus groups, including SDSU Athletics and the College Area Business District. Christian Onwuka, A.S. vice president of financial affairs, said the partnership is a source of pride. "It has been amazing to see so many different divisions and facets of campus come together and give their all toward this campaign fighting food insecurity," he said. Not all of the donations will go to the food bank, however. 20 percent of the food remaining on campus will go towards helping SDSU's Economic Crisis Response Team (ECRT). The ECRT works to prevent food insecurity for students on campus, as well as provide emergency support for those in a sudden economic crisis.  1894
