(KGTV) - The Navy is taking action to assess living conditions in military housing amid complaints of rodents, mold, and water damage. Families have shared stories about housing problems with 10News over several weeks. The Navy sent a survey Monday to received feedback on the situation. Erika Bradley, a Navy wife and mother, said she arrived at MCAS Miramar last June to find mice and mold in her new home. “When my husband calls and he's in a war zone, do you think I am going to complain about mold? ‘Hey babe, we have rats where our children eat,” Bradley said. “I don't want him to worry about that because if his mind isn't focused where it needs to be, that's peoples lives.” Lawmakers are trying to push a bill through Congress that would give military families power to withhold rent from landlords. More than 700,000 people live in privatized housing across military bases. Bradley is hoping the military will put more pressure on private companies, holding them accountable. The Navy is also conducting town hall meetings and walk-throughs. 10News reached out to MCAS Miramar property management, but they did not respond. 1143
(KGTV) - Ten Navy SEALS and a sailor are being discharged after testing positive for cocaine or methamphetamines, USNI News reported Friday. The sailors failed a series of drug screenings in March and April, a spokesperson said. It’s unclear if the cases were related. The troops were assigned to East Coast Naval Special Warfare Units.“We have a zero-tolerance policy for the use of illicit drugs and as such these individuals will be held accountable for their actions. We are confident in our drug testing procedures and will continue to impress on all members of the command that illicit drugs are incompatible with the SEAL ethos and Naval service,” Cmdr. Tamara Lawrence said in a statement to USNI News. 716
A 9-year-old boy retrieved a gun from his parents' bedroom and shot his 13-year-old sister to death, authorities said, after the two got into an argument over a video game controller. The incident occurred over the weekend in rural Monroe County, Mississippi, as the children's mother was preparing lunch in the kitchen, the country sheriff said."He wanted the controller, and I guess he knew where to find the gun," Sheriff Cecil Cantrell told CNN.The boy grabbed a handgun, which was kept in a nightstand next to the bed, and shot the sister in the back of the head, the sheriff said."This is the first time I've ever dealt with any child that was shot like that," Cantrell said. "And I hope I never deal with it again."The girl was taken to Le Bonheur Children's Hospital in Memphis, where she was pronounced dead Sunday. The case is still under investigation and authorities have not filed charges."We are talking to the district attorney," Cantrell said.The-CNN-Wire 977
(KGTV) - San Diegans will soon have to press a few more buttons — if they’re not already doing so.Starting May 19, everyone will be required to enter the area code then the 7-digit number when making calls or texts to the 619 or 858 area code. The call or message will not go through if you don’t add the area code prefix. For landlines, there’s one more step for callers. They must enter +1 the area code then the 7-digit number or the call will not be completed. The change was approved last year by the California Public Utilities Commission in an effort to prevent the area from running out of phone numbers. The CPUC expects all 619 prefixed number to be used up by early next year while 858 has approximately 30 years of phone numbers left.Experts suggest reprogramming the number with the proper area code prefix in all services like automatic dialing medical systems and alarm systems. The 619 area code largely serves the city of San Diego and portions of the South Bay, but also East County along with some unincorporated areas. The 858 area code spans north from San Diego into La Jolla, Del Mar and Solana Beach, as well as inland to Rancho Santa Fe, Rancho Bernardo and Poway. This change will not affect emergency calls to 911. 1270
