HONG KONG, July 9 (Xinhua) -- A moderate earthquake measuring 5. 2 on the Richter scale struck the east coast of Taiwan on Friday, the U.S. Geological Survay (USGS) said.The quake hit at 3:43 a.m. local time (1943 GMT Thursday), at about 90 km southeast of Taipei at a depth of 21 km, according to the USGS.

BEIJING, July 21 (Xinhua) -- Rain-triggered floods left 273 people dead and 218 missing since rainstorms struck south China on July 1, latest figures from the Ministry of Civil Affairs show; up from the 146 deaths reported on July 16.As of 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, about 58 million people in 11 provinces and Chongqing Municipality had been affected by the floods, with 3 million being evacuated and resettled, according to a statement released Wednesday by the ministry.A total of 330,000 homes and some 4 million hectares of crops have also been destroyed.Also, economic losses were estimated at about 58.27 billion yuan (8.53 billion U.S. dollars), the statement said.Additionally on Wednesday, the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Civil Affairs earmarked 329 million yuan for disaster relief in the flood-hit provinces of Sichuan, Shaanxi, Jiangxi and Hubei and the municipality of Chongqing.The funds will be used for the evacuation and resettlement efforts, reconstruction and death gratuities, said the statement.The previous relief funds of 370 million yuan was allocated to the provinces of Anhui, Hubei, Hunan, Guizhou and Yunnan, and Chongqing Municipality on July 16.Also on Wednesday, the Organization Department of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee allocated 5.5 million yuan "special membership fees" for disaster relief in the provinces of Hubei, Anhui, Zhejiang, Yunnan and the municipality of Chongqing.Earlier Wednesday, the Chinese government revealed that torrential rains and floods, the worst in a decade, have claimed the lives of 701 people and left 347 missing in China since the beginning of the year.Liu Ning, vice minister of Water Resources, warned that floods, mud-flooding and landslides would likely continue to plague some areas in Hainan, Guangdong, and Guangxi with landfall of a severe tropical storm, named Chanthu, on Thursday.

GONGSHAN, Yunnan, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- Rescuers are racing to search for 80 people still missing three days after rain-triggered mudslides hit a remote mountain town in southwest China's Yunnan Province, killing at least 12.By 7 p.m. Friday, rescuers had recovered six more bodies, bringing the death toll to 12, said Hou Xinrong, deputy head of the Drung-Nu Autonomous County of Gongshan, which administers Puladi Township where the mudslides occurred.Hampered by the mountain terrain and persistent rainfall, the rescue efforts had been progressing slowly, Hou said. "Excavators can't proceed to the site and mountain torrents could be triggered at any time due to the downpours."Most of the missing people are employees of the Yujin Iron Mine and residents of Puladi, where the mudslides struck at about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday.Around Friday noon, a Xinhua reporter saw several soldiers digging in the debris with spades, hoes and sometimes their bare hands in hardest-hit Litoudi Village."We've found a body here, but it was stuck in the mud. BEIJING, July 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese spent less in June amid surging commodities prices and floods in many of the country's southern provinces, according to the latest reading of an index that gauges consumer confidence on Friday.The Bankcard Consumer Confidence Index (BCCI), compiled by the Xinhua News Agency and the national bank card association China UnionPay, slid to 86.30 in June, down 0.09 points from May.Compared with the same period last year, the June BCCI figure was 0.24 points higher. The index hit a record high of 86.89 in March.The reading in June indicated Chinese bank card spending was affected by surging commodities prices and the floods in southern China.Consumers also turned more conservative in spending due to sluggish performances of domestic stock markets and property markets in June.China's month-on-month economic growth rate is likely to have slowed in June given signs that electricity demand declined remarkably that month and the Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) for China's manufacturing sector dipped 1.8 percentage points for two months in a run to 52.1 percent in June.Xinhua and UnionPay jointly started compiling the BCCI index in April 2009 based on bank card transaction data and analysis of structural changes in urban consumption.
