SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – The City Council is expected to decide on a proposal that would turn two purchased hotels into housing for San Diego’s homeless, and on Monday, Mayor Kevin Faulconer made a push in favor of the plan.Part of California’s Project Homekey includes an initiative to provide more homeless Californians with permanent housing amid the COVID-19 crisis. The project’s budget is 0 million, with million for San Diego County.At a Monday press conference, Faulconer said, “Our goal was to reimagine our homeless system to get folks into housing more quickly with an emphasis on 'quickly.’ Tomorrow, the City Council will have the opportunity to put these dollars to good use for hotels to be transformed into 332 new housing units.”The city is working with San Diego's Housing Commission (SDHC) to turn two Residence Inns -- one in Mission Valley's Hotel Circle and the other in Kearny Mesa -- into apartment-style homes for the homeless.The hotels-turned-apartments would ideally create 300 units for over 400 homeless individuals, many of whom are currently staying inside the San Diego Convention Center's temporary housing facility.But some San Diegans like Josh, who resides next door to the Residence Inn in Mission Valley, are in favor of finding solutions for the homeless crisis but against the locations the SDHC has chosen."If you see the homeless shelters in downtown, those don't look like the best places on outside. A lot of loitering, crowds, so we're not informed on what this will look like," said Josh.He said if the purchase gets approved, he wants there to be strict guidelines for tenants."People who are elderly, have kids, or demonstrated work history. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The former Navy sailor accused of killing four people by driving his truck off the Coronado Bridge and onto a crowd attended a motions hearing Friday.Richard Sepolio faces four counts of gross vehicular manslaughter and DUI. His defense team argued to throw out the DUI charge, as well as crucial evidence, including initial conversations between Sepolio and his arresting officers. The judge concluded that both issues would be allowed in the upcoming trial.The nephew of two of the victims wants answers. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The largest employer in the country is waving away a long standing tradition. Walmart is planning to phase out its greeters at more than 1,000 stores across the country. The retail giant says it is moving forward with a new role called “customer host” that is more physically demanding. The hosts will still greet people but must also be able to pass physical exams including lifting a 25-pound box and climbing ladders. Critics say the move targets their elderly and disabled employees, which make up a significant portion of the company’s greeters. “I can’t do that,” said Adam Catlin, who has cerebral palsy and has worked as a Walmart greeter for a decade. Walmart says it is striving to place greeters in other jobs at the company and the title of greeter will be officially eliminated April 26. “I want to keep my job past April 26 because I have made a lot of good friends and a lot of good memories over the years,” added Catlin. Walmart has not said how many greeters will lose their jobs but adds it is, “extending the current 60-day greeter transition period for associates with disabilities while we explore the circumstances and potential accommodations, for each individual, that can be made within each store.” 1252

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Students have been released from school following reports of shots fired in the area around Kearny Senior High School Wednesday afternoon. According to San Diego Police, officers were alerted to the reports around 2:20 p.m. So far, no one has been taken into custody and police are still searching for a scene. Mesa College Drive is also closed from Ashford to Armory while police search the area. Kearny Senior High School is located on the 1900 block of Komet Way near San Diego Mesa College. 523
