Teachers are talking candidly about the challenges this school year will bring. With many school districts in Virginia opting to start the school year with distance learning, one Hampton Roads social studies teacher shares his thoughts on how to help students have a virtually successful school year.Christopher True is a middle school social studies teacher who is gearing up for a new school year and the inevitable challenge that will come with it.True says communication is key to virtual success.¡°If that student is struggling with something, they may not be telling the parent.¡±He says parents should encourage their children not to be afraid to reach out to their teacher for help.True says the communication between students and teachers is just as important as the communication between the teachers and parents. He says parents shouldn¡¯t be afraid of contacting teachers and describes virtual learning as ¡°a community-led effort.¡±Schools will undoubtedly have expectations for students, even at home, but True hopes those expectations come leniency.¡°If you have a student whose parents work and [that student] actually has to go to daycare, they can't be expected to be in a class zoom at 10 a.m. if they don't have access to that stuff. And that's just going to be one of those things that we have to account for.¡±The test run of virtual learning at the end of last school year taught everyone new lessons, including that it takes time to adjust. While he¡¯s banking on beginning the school year virtually, True is looking forward to connecting in the classroom once again.¡°There's no place I'd rather be. I can't wait to sit in a classroom with my kids again when we can do it safely and I can keep my students safe.¡±WTKR's Kofo Lasaki first reported this story. 1779

The band Smash Mouth is facing criticism for playing a concert to a large crowd that were reportedly mostly mask-less. The band headlined the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally being held this week in South Dakota.Images from Sunday night¡¯s Smash Mouth concert show a crowd packed shoulder to shoulder in some places, with few people wearing masks. At one point in the concert, a band member addressing the crowd can be heard saying "F*** that Covid s***,¡± according to KOTA-TV. It's unclear what he's saying before or after that comment. The group defended the concert in a statement given to Billboard; band manager Robert Hayes said "the promoter did a fantastic job with their COVID protocol. They had a very strict social distancing and mask policy in place for all workers."Hayes added comments about the "endless hours" spent to ensure the concert happened as safely as possible and ¡°we are very happy with the outcome."Sturgis city officials allowed the annual event to go on this year, despite pleas from residents, and recommend visitors wear masks and social distance. However, masks are not required.Numbers from the South Dakota Department of Transportation indicate attendance numbers are similar to 2019 for the first few days:Friday, August 7: 49,835 entering ¨C down 4.3% from Friday last yearSaturday, August 8: 54,804 entering ¨C down 8.0% from Saturday last yearSunday, August 9: 56,149 entering ¨C up 1.1% from Sunday last yearThis is the 80th year of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. The banana phone is back.A startup that licenses the Nokia phone brand has unveiled a new version of the 8110, a curved mobile phone that was first released in 1996 and featured in "The Matrix."The phone, which is offered in banana yellow and black, will sell for €79 (). It comes loaded with a new version of the game Snake, Finnish startup HMD said in a statement."This is a return to the glory years of Nokia," said Ian Fogg, senior analyst at IHS Markit. "But it also includes all the new technology."The 8110 comes with 4G, and a handful of apps including Google Maps, Facebook and Twitter. But it doesn't have a flashy operating system and users won't be able to download other popular apps.Fogg said that basic -- or "feature" -- phones are appealing because they are reliable, and can run for a long time on a single charge. The 8110 goes 25 days in standby mode, for example.Nokia used to be the world's largest maker of mobile phones, but it struggled to adapt to the era of smartphones and compete with the likes of Apple and Samsung.Microsoft purchased the company's handset business in 2013, but later unwound the deal. Nokia now focuses on making technology for telecommunications networks.HMD, which has licensed the Nokia brand since 2016, sold over 70 million handsets in 2017, according to IHS. That puts its sales, on an annualized basis, in the same league as Sony and Lenovo."HMD's strategy clearly aims to return Nokia to be a mobile market leader, even if it's too early for HMD to realistically target displacing Samsung or Apple," Fogg said.Nokia marketed the original 8110 as "the first of its kind in terms of its ergonomics." Its battery lasted up to six days, and it was able to store 16 ring tones and up to 324 names and numbers."It feels good in the hand and fits into any pocket. The revolutionary curved design fits the natural shape of your face," the company said in a press release at the time.  1948

TAMPA, Fla. ¡ª A Florida mother has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against a Tampa gas station after she claims the station's market sold her son "defective capsules" of kratom, which led to his death.Laura Lamon filed the wrongful death lawsuit filed against Sligh Petrol Mart operated by Anjiya C- Store Inc., on May 18 for selling her 27-year-old son Christopher Waldron the herbal supplement capsules.Lamon is suing Sligh Petrol Mart for negligence. Count three of the filing claims that Slight Petrol Mart displayed ¡°the capsules next to over-the-counter oral medications and selling the capsules as a product taken orally when the capsules were not safe to orally ingest.¡± The lawsuit LAO alleges that ¡°Sligh Petrol Mart failed to provide its customers, including Mr. Waldron with any reasonable warnings or instructions or with the capsules. The failure to provide a reasonable warning or instructions made the capsules unreasonably dangerous.¡±Waldron died on July 7, 2017 from what the Hillsborough County Medical Examiner¡¯s Office autopsy report says was ¡°intoxication by Mitragynine (kratom)."The toxicology report shows that Waldron¡¯s levels for Mitragynine were 1.8 mg/L ¡ª levels that are considered extremely high.According to Associated Medical Examiner Leszek Chrostowsk, if Waldron didn't take kratom, he'd be alive today.Lamon said her son struggled with an addiction to prescription painkillers for more than a decade. When she got the phone call from Tampa Police that her son might have died from an overdose; she assumed it was from a prescription painkiller.¡°I was shocked, I thought it would for sure be opiates, for sure. I had no idea about this,¡± Lamon said.  According to Lamon, the capsules Waldron took before he died were labeled "Optimized Plant Meditated Solutions (O.P.M.S.) Gold." The front of the packet identifies the supplement as Mitragyna Speciosa Botanical Extract. The back of the package says the product contains Mitragyna Speciosa Leaf Extract and that it contains 60mg of Mitragynine. There are no instructions on the packet, just a warning that claims the pills are ¡°only for use as a botanical specimen. Manufacturer of this product takes no responsibility for the misuse of this product.¡± The packet also contains a link to O.P.M.S. website for another disclaimer."If it were properly labeled than he would've had a chance, you know, to say OK I shouldn¡¯t take this amount,¡± Lamon said. ¡°Again, I don't know how much he took, but it was enough to kill him.¡± 2611
