Democrats argued that President Donald Trump sought a phony investigation of a political rival and pursued a discredited conspiracy theory about Ukraine, while restless senators played with a new toy Thursday during Trump's impeachment trial. Democrats said there was no evidence that former Vice President Joe Biden did anything improper in dealings with Ukraine. Republicans outside the chamber challenged Democrats' argument and pledged to find out more about Biden and his son’s dealings in Ukraine. Meanwhile, senators found a new outlet to focus their attention: fidget spinners handed out by North Carolina Sen. Richard Burr.Chief justice's admonishment followed a note from CollinsSupreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts' admonishment to House impeachment prosecutors and President Donald Trump's defense team followed a note written by Sen. Susan Collins of Maine. Collins' spokeswoman confirms that the Republican penned the note after House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler's comment about a “cover-up” by Senate Republicans for Trump. After receiving the note, Roberts admonished both sides around 1 a.m. Wednesday. Collins indicated afterward that she'll make her decision on impeachment on the facts that are presented, and said Nadler's comments won't affect her decision.Schiff sets tone with appeals to SenateRep. Adam Schiff is the face of the House’s impeachment case against President Donald Trump. Though he has six managers by his side, Schiff is setting the tone, working methodically to convince the Senate Trump deserves to be removed from office. Schiff told The Associated Press in an interview Thursday it is like he is “introducing myself to a number of the senators” at Trump's impeachment trial. He said many Republicans are “finding I'm not the demon” that he's often portrayed to be. Republicans were complimentary of Schiff but said they learned nothing new about the case against the president. 1951
CNN has settled a lawsuit with Kentucky teenager Nicholas Sandmann, after he suddenly became a public figure through pictures of an encounter at a Washington demonstration last year. Sandmann claimed media organizations falsely labeled him as a racist as he stood, wearing a ‘Make America Great Again’ hat near a Native American man, when the two were near the Lincoln Memorial. Both Sandmann and the man, Nathan Phillips, said they were trying to defuse tensions between competing demonstrators. CNN and Sandmann lawyer Todd McMurtry confirms the settlement. 571
DETROIT, Michigan — John Lind is a veteran and military historian who is about to embark on the adventure of a lifetime. It’s a jump in honor of the 75th anniversary of D-Day, when allied forces, including the U.S. stormed the beaches of Normandy to eradicate Adolf Hitler’s control.Lind is among more than 200 parachutists handpicked from all over the world to do the jump in England. They will commemorate the landings that happened on D-Day (the beginning of the end of World War II).“The didn’t have to do it. They stopped Europe from being oppressed and brought liberty and freedom back to Europe,” Lind said of the day the troops landed in Normandy.Lind is the director of the Detroit Arsenal of Democracy Museum and has completed 165 other jumps, but he’s been training for this next feat for two years.“You’ll see waves of C-47 coming across the channel, 30 to 40 aircraft coming across,” he said. “They’ll be dropping 10 men in groups of three. Once they jump out of the plane, they may feel light as air, but they’ll be wearing … gear that weight more than 100 pounds.”The “fear keeps you sharp,” Lind said.James Bertolino is a firefighter who parachuted there for the 65th anniversary of D-Day. He’ll never forget landing in the drop zone and seeing what a Word War II veteran would have seen.It helps pay tribute to the men who carried out one of the most remembered acts of war.Lind says he is proud to be part of it.“This is the last hurrah for many World War II vets,” he said. “I feel privileged and grateful. The anniversary of D-Day is June 6, 2019. 1577

David Blaine is under investigation after reports of sexual assault were made against the magician, New York Police Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea said on Monday. An active investigation is under way by the department's special victims division, Shea said at a news conference on Monday. Shea declined to provide any additional details.Meanwhile, sources familiar with the investigation told CNN that an accuser has come forward to file a report against Blaine with the NYPD. However, the allegation is outside the statute of limitations, according to the sources. It is unclear how the NYPD will proceed with the investigation.Additionally, a source told CNN there was an investigation into Blaine about a year ago, but it has since been closed.Blaine did not immediately respond to CNN's request for comment. The master illusionist first rose to fame in 1999 when he was buried in a plexiglass coffin under a three-ton water-filled tank for seven days. Since then, Blaine has encased himself in a six-ton block of ice in Times Square for 58 hours, stood atop a flagpole for 35 hours and spent 44 days suspended in a glass box in London.Blaine is scheduled for a European tour that kicks off in June. 1212
