BEIJING, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- China is faced with severe challenges in collecting enough blood plasma to produce medicines, Health Minister Chen Zhu said Sunday.Chen called on the public to join blood donation after donating blood plasma at the Beijing Red Cross Blood Center on Sunday, the fifth time since he took office in 2007.Blood plasma is needed to make blood products like prothrombin complex which is vital for hemophiliacs.The total volume of blood plasma collected last year was 4,180 tonnes, while the volume needed to produce enough medicines was 8,000 tonnes, said a statement from the ministry. The situation became even worse this year.Donations of blood plasma in China fell dramatically in recent years, as a result of safety concerns from donors and the government's efforts to regulate blood collection after contamination triggered HIV infection scandals.In an overhaul of plasma collection services in 2004, the ministry closed 262 donation centers, leaving only 138 in operation, resulting in the plasma donations falling at least one-third from 5,000 tonnes in 2003.Blood plasma are currently collected at 144 designed stations across the mainland. The stations, as requested by law, are all owned by major manufacturers of blood products.Chen promised to encourage qualified drug makers to set up more collection stations in the next five years.He also assured the public the safety of blood donation at authorized stations.

BEIJING, Dec. 14 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Wednesday exchanged congratulatory messages with Cypriot President Demetris Christofias on the 40th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic ties.In his message, Hu said bilateral ties between China and Cyprus have developed smoothly since they were established.Political mutual trust has continued to deepen and the two countries understand each other and support each other's major concerns, he said, adding bilateral pragmatic cooperation has also been expanding continuously.China highly values its relations with Cyprus and is ready to work with the country to deepen their traditional friendship, strengthen exchanges at various levels and enhance cooperation in such areas as economy, trade, culture and tourism, the Chinese president said.Hu said China is also willing to maintain communication and coordination with Cyprus on international and regional affairs.Christofias, for his part, said China and Cyprus have carried out close exchanges and cooperation, adding bilateral ties have been further strengthened through frequent high-level exchanges in recent years.Cyprus believes the two countries are on friendly terms and understand each other, which is in line with the common interests of both China and Cyprus, Christofias said.The president said Cyprus also believes bilateral relations would make further progress in the future.Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi also exchanged congratulatory messages on Wednesday with his Cypriot counterpart Erato Kozakou Marcoullis.

PHNOM PENH, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia reported on Monday that some 54 Cambodian children had been killed by dengue fever in the first nine months of this year, compared to 37 kids dying of the disease in the whole year of 2010.From January to September this year, some 12,392 cases of dengue fever had been reported with 54 children killed by the disease. The whole year 2010 reported only 5,497 cases, Ngan Chantha, director of dengue control at the Ministry of Health, said on Monday."This year's rainy season has been plagued by floods, leading to more cases of the disease," he said. "I would like to appeal to parents to let their children sleep under mosquito nets and if their kids have any symptom that is suspicious of the disease, they should urgently send them for medical attention."Dengue is caused by mosquitoes. The disease causes an acute illness of sudden onset that usually follows symptoms such as headache, fever, exhaustion, severe muscle and joint pain, swollen glands and rash.In Cambodia, the outbreak of dengue fever usually begins at the onset of the rainy season from May to October. 

BEIJING, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- China will regulate the production and sale of cosmetic colored contact lenses by including them in its list of items classified as "medical apparatus."Some people wear such non-corrective colored contacts to change or enhance eye color for cosmetic and fashion purposes.As these contacts are not for vision correction and medication purposes, they are currently off limits to the country's medical administration and regulators, said a statement published on the website of the State Food and Drug Administration on Thursday.However, with the increasingly popular use of cosmetic contacts, safety and quality problems due to the regulation loophole are likely to harm consumers' health, and the administration has decided to expand the current medical regulation on contact lenses to cover cosmetic ones, the statement said.It explained that the administration will soon issue a notice to ban the manufacture and sale of these contacts without proper registration and licenses.The statement also warned consumers of the risks of these contacts and suggested they carefully choose and use such products.
